Natalie is an introverted woman who works at a film museum. She joins Hot Guy Trading Cards (I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's just a form of speed dating) and selects the card of Max Dorset. The card SAYS that he's a librarian who's looking to get married. And the bonus? He's very attractive.

How could she have not met this guy before?

"He's probably some amazing genius who works for a top-secret government agency."
"S.H.I.E.L.D.," Natalie said. "He works for S.H.I.E.L.D."
"S.H.I.E.L.D. is fictitious," Denise said. "He's not one of the Avengers."

Natalie calls him up for a date. When they meet, it turns out there's been a bit of a misprint. Max is definitely not a librarian - he's a lawyer, and a rather ruthless one at that. He's got 3 weeks vacation after winning a huge case in which he wasn't exactly the "white hat." And he didn't check the "Marry" box on his card, either. He checked "One-night-stand."

They're both surprised by each other. Natalie graciously apologizes and tries to leave, but Max finds himself intrigued. She's not at all like the women he usually dates, and he convinces her not to end the evening early.

After a fabulous date together, Natalie makes a very out-of-character decision to have a one-night-stand with Max. Why? She's just gotten out of a very unrewarding 3 year relationship with a putz. Max knows this is a big deal for her so he pulls out all the stops and does his best to give her an unforgettable night.

Then he walks her home and that's it. They don't plan on seeing each other again. Max's job leaves no time for a relationship, and Natalie's heart is set on an eventual wedding and kids - and she knows Max isn't that kind of guy.

But of course this is a romance novel, and they can't stop thinking about each other...

...

I feel strange about rating and recommending romance novels. Whether one likes a romance novel or not is just such a matter of personal preference.

This romance was perfect for me - it was just how I like my romances. The heroine is sweet, adorable, innocent-but-not-a-virgin, with a good heart. The hero is kind, patient, and attentive. All the sex is consensual, and no one gets physically hurt during sex. The characters care about each other and want to make each other happy.

Natalie was so adorable and loveable and she made me laugh a few times.

Letting go of every kiss she'd had in the past wasn't difficult. It was a relief. Secretly, Natalie had always suspected she could be one of the great kissers of all time, but she'd never been with anyone who truly inspired her.

So cute! My heart is breaking.

She also references books and movies and takes inspiration from her favorite characters.

Katniss wouldn't turn off the lights. Natalie wouldn't either.

Awww! Alright, I'll stop rotting your teeth out with sweetness. But you get the picture. She's vulnerable and endearing. I really liked her.

This is a romance, not erotica - it's complete with a storyline, side characters, an actual plot (a sweet, predictable plot, but still), and the required oh-no-we-can't-be-together fakeout before the Happily Ever After. I read romance and not erotica because I like a plot, a story, and actual characterization rather than endless sex scenes.

It's not high literature, and that's why (even though I loved every minute of it) I can't bring myself to give it 5 real stars. It gets 5 "romance stars" from me, though! It's really difficult to find a good romance. Anyone will tell you that you have to read a dozen or more to find one you really like. Especially when, nowadays, "I own you, bitch. Down on your knees, slut," is so popular and it doesn't do anything for me, it actually makes me sad. Also, hurting each other (or just hurting the woman) during sex is also really popular right now and that's also something that really turns me off. This goes for vampires and werewolf romances, too, where the sex seems painful and involves blood and stuff. So I'm holding on to this one, it might be years before I find a good one again.

How's the sex, Carmen?

It's SO AMAZING, oh my gosh.

"This seemingly mismatched couple manages to discover where they do connect, creating a relationship that, while challenging to maintain, is hard to deny. There is much success within these pages, as Leigh develops two compelling characters dealing with the realistic challenges of being so different (RT Book Reviews)". 4 stars

It's been a while since I read a Harlequin romance. This was all sexy romance with a half naked guy on the cover!! But besides all that! I related to it discussing making choices between lots of time commitment to make really serious money versus using that same time to have a job you love and develop relationships and family ties. I can relate to that!

I liked so much about this but when I reflected on the overall story, I realized the heroine didn't really DO much. Like it seemed to be more about the hero's personal growth than the heroine's. But the hero did perform emotional labour and apologized appropriately when necessary, so there were a lot of good things to this story.

At her very first Hot Guys Trading Card Event, Natalie Gellar pulls who she believes is a handsome librarian from the trading card pile. In reality a printing error was made and she really got Max Dorset, lawyer who just won a big case and is hot, hot, hot to boot. Natalie doesn't realize the mistake until she actually meets Max and then the chemistry sets in. They agree on a friends with benefits only relationship for three weeks until Max returns to work but, somehow, it becomes so much more. Natalie is convinced that Max can't possibly be seriously interested in her, a film archivist and movie buff whose big, loud family can be a pain and Max thinks he should go for the brass ring while the fire is hot but that won't include marriage and a family. Can these two mismatched people find common ground when true love is there for the taking?

Natalie just dithered all the time about what she thought was going on and she was wrong most of the time. After her first show of courage, she was afraid of going for what she wanted. Max didn't realize what was in front of his nose for most of the story. Both of these things made the story drag in places. It also stopped about 20 pages short of where it should have.

I didn't like it, and I can't quite figure out the reason, but I think it has something to do with it being too realistic. It was very unromantic, somehow, they were very levelheaded, and in the end they didn't even say I love you, because they didn't know each other all that long and that would have been 'too soon' if this was real life. The thing is, it's not. And it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be romance and love and happily ever after. And this was: will you see wjsy we could be together, it may or may not turn out. No thank you.
