A novella in the Pern saga. It has been several turns since Sean presented to Admiral Benden the Dragonriders of Pern (set about halfway through the 50-year threadfall). The dragons have prospered and to be a dragonrider is desireable. Sean and Sorka, along with their dragons and the other queens and bronze riders have filled every corner of the weyr. It is time to expand, before the holders take the best cave systems. Torene has her heart set on one in particular. This short book is really Torene's story and the establishment of Benden Weyr. It is also the story of the logistics of a new version of the species successfully expanding the defense of Pern and the colonists and how to set up a new weyr - from heating to water supplies to the use of the some of the last working equipment from a technology that is worn out and no longer replaceable.

This is part of The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, and boy does it drag. But this one meandered with multiple holds, weyrs, people of each, and no get direction. This story is the one that got me to do a DNF for decades, as I stopped in the beginning/middle somewhere. It is a history of sorts but told in a way that drags.

It is written 25 years after the first book, the first was a devolved society so it reads pretty well as more historical, whereas here they are tech savvy and woman (kind of) have parity. The thoughts and wording are a bit sexist but not overly so for age of the writer.

I loved this series as a teen and read right over the datedness in the series. If I had started with this book of Pern The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, I would have never read another. I got through the first novella in the book, years ago, but not the this one, the 2nd, as it was with even flatter, with 2 dimensional characters and so many that the direction was disjointed. It was more of a history. This time I did push through and got to the last story, which was pretty good. So, I would skip this one unless you want more background and history.
