يا بهية و خبرينى
مالهم بيكى اللايمين
دى عيونك يا صبيه
بالحزن ماليانين
بهية شاهين
هى امرأة بحجم القضية
رغم عمرها الذى لم يتجاوز الثامنة عشر الا انها تحمل قضية عمرها الاف الأعوام

ربما ستختلط الامور بين بهية و نوال السعداوى مرارا
فكل منهما درست الطب و كل منهما لها دور نضالى سياسى و كل منهما لها احقاد و ضغائن ضد عالم يتسيده الرجال انعكست على الرجل نفسه أحيانا
أرادتها نوال رواية واقعية و لكنى أنى لنوال الواقعية و هى الغارقة دوما فى نير القضية الغير واقعية بالمرة

سقطت عدة سقطات ربما لأنها رواية من تاريخ نوال الأدبى المبكر فأول لقاء بين بهية و سليم ذهبا سويا من الجامعة لهضبة المقطم و فى اللقاء الثانى أعطاها مفتاح شقته و تبادلا الغرام فى نفس اليوم رغم أنها لم تعرف أحدا قبله و لم يتبادلا بضع كلمات و ليس لديها أى رغبات جنسية واضحة فى الرواية.
جاءت الرواية سريالية إلى حد ما

كانت بهية فى صراع بين رغبات حقيقية يحرمها المجتمع كالرغبة فى الحب و الوضوح و الحياة و العدل و الحرية و رغبات زائفة تمثل قيم هذا المجتمع كالنفاق و الطاعة و التقيد و الكبت و الظلم و كافة أنواع الزيف
اقتنعت منذ البداية أن كل ما نتصور أنه حقيقى فهو زائف أما الزائف فهو الحقيقة الوحيدة فى الحياة
و ردى البيبان يا بهية
لا يظلموكى
دارى العيون يا صبية
لا الناس
يحسدوكى
لم ترد البيبان و لم تدار العيون و تحدت الجميع الى أن جاءت النهاية الواقعية فى فصل من فصول حياة امرأة

When I first read this short novel, I was thrilled by it and considered it very interesting, but only from an outsider's perspective, seeing a woman's struggles in a society that is foreign to me. Rereading the story several years later, however, and with another three of El-Saadawi's novels to compare to, most notably my favourite so far, Woman at Point Zero, I have to rate it higher and praise its universal value.

This is a thought-provoking story about a woman fighting within herself - divided between the official, obedient woman society expects her to be and her inner self, full of desire for a life of her own. It is a beautiful and valid story, not only in the Muslim world, but in all societies with strong opinions regarding so-called normal behaviour.

Growing older, and more experienced (some would say bitter), I tend not to see the specific Muslim society as the main issue, but rather human community in general, where the majority of people are afraid of outsiders, thinkers, individual dreamers and strong personalities going against the mainstream values.

Of course the limitation of personal freedom is much more pronounced in religiously conservative communities, but as a social pressure, I recognise it in all countries I have lived - despite the fact they all are "open-minded, liberal societies", advertising religious tolerance and freedom of speech. The reality for individual people, however, may look very different, adding hypocrisy to the issues to deal with.

So this book is recommended to whoever ponders on the relationship between individual and collective, creativity and routine, internal and external self images.

روايه عن فتاه تبلغ الثامنه عشرة وتعاني بشده من تخبط في تحديد هويتها على كافة الاصعده ..
تناقش الروايه المجتمع وسيطرة مجرد افكار باليه عليه .. وكيف ان الانسان لا يختار شيء في حياته .. فكيف يقول عن نفسه انه هو .. وهو لم يختر شيئا !
لم الخمس نجوم ؟ لأني رأيت نفسي في بهية شاهين .. وتألمت على حالها .. وما زلت مثلها انتظر الاجابه !!

It's always a pleasure to read something by Nawal el Saadaoui.
This time it's "Two Women in One".
The story is about Bhiah Shaheen 's internal struggle. She is constantly divided between the obedient, well behaved, naive woman that society expects her to be and her true self, full of desire for a life of her own and a body under her own control.
The story starts off really slowly. As I read the first thirty to forty pages, I had this huge inclination to sop reading it all together because of the overly poetic prose but my strong curiosity to know this peculiar character kept me from doing so. and I'm so glad that it did. As I read, I started making sense of Bahiah's feelings and inner thoughts. I managed to understand, if not fully, the reason why she wants to escape her life and her body.
"She knew why human beings hide their real desires: because they are strong enough to be destructive; and since people do not want to be destroyed, they opt for a passive life with no real desires."
Bahiah's words left me puzzled. Am I in control of my own body and desires or am I conditioned to think this way because I'm too afraid to think otherwise?
Like any book written by Al Saadaoui, I'm left with unanswered questions, feeling baffled and confused.

رواية بذيئة❌❌❌ ،لا تستحق القراءة شنو هذا دكتورة نوال بس حجي ملل والله حسبتها ورقه ورقه شنو القصة ؟منو بهية؟ شنو من انسانه فجأة تروح ويه ولد لا تعرفه ولا يعرفها تنطي أغلى ما تملك انتي كتبتي القصة عن مجتمع انكليزي؟ ؟❗❗
شلون عمرها 18 سنة وهي متخصصة في أمراض الصدرية؟؟رواية متناقضه ❗
فيما مضى قرأت مذكرات طبيبة لماذا أجد نفس النسخه من مذكرات طبيبة؟
هل عندج هوس ؟؟آخر تجربة الي ويه رواياتج
اصلا هي ورق محشو بحبر وين جان بالج من كتبتي الرواية والله صدك وين جنتي شنو مريضه لو شنووو
لم استفد اي شي من هاي الرواية ابدا ابدا 😠😠😠😠

Time and again i am reminded how it’s really not necessary to write huge books to pen down something truly remarkable and highly intimidating. From the first line to the last, this tiny little book made my head swirl like anything. But every single word hit right on the head. It’s a tale of girl brought up in a regressive society, where body which was shamed since the childhood, loses her identity and struggles throughout in order to find meaning with her true self.

On the face of it Bahiah was, “hard working, well-behaved medical student”, but on the inside her entire being was churning to rebel against the societal norms set for the girls of her age and body restrictions placed by the families. Her family wanted her to be a doctor but she found her self expression in painting, which she had to keep hidden from her father who thought of it as nothing but waste of time. Having no control over any aspect of her life she finally found respite when she met a stranger with whom her mind and body got connected instantaneously.

Once she went on the round of self discovery after finding herself being connected with Saleem, she questions the choices made for her by others more rigorously than ever before.

‘It was her mother who had given birth to her and her father who had enrolled her into medical college. Her aunt, who suffered from a lung disease, wanted her to specialize in this particular field of medicine. Her uncle wanted her to be a successful, highly-paid doctor, who would marry his son, the business-school graduate. Her savings would grow thanks to his expertise in commerce, and they would raise children who would inherit their wealth and bear his name, and the names of his father and grandfather before him.’

Nawal openly questions the patriarchal norms of the Egyptian society in this book; as she points out the practice of inflicting shame towards the female sex organs to the point of creating identity crisis in our protagonist, female genital mutilation (FGM), dictatorial familial authority over the lives of the children. Her satire stands out as she points out the irony of selling the girls off against their will in the name of marriage and then turning them into sexual toys, whereas before marriage the sexual organs and the topic of sex was treated as a taboo.

“A girl moves from her father’s house to a husband’s and suddenly changes from a non sexual being with no sex organs to a sexual creature who sleeps, wakes, eats, and drink sex.”

Slowly and steadily she makes our protagonist stand on her feet as she guides herself to find her true identity starting with first painting in secret and later openly, exploring her sexuality with the man she found connection with and eventually shouting her lungs out during a demonstration against the draconian laws in Egypt.

Autobiographical elements can be sensed in the book as Nawal herself was a doctor who, as per her own words, was forced to become one against her own will. And her sense of defiance came when she chose to become a writer and a feminist.

كل منا تعيش بداخلها امرأتان تلك التي تشكلت شخصيتها بضغط من الاسرة والمجتمع والتقاليد وهي المشوهة التي تعتبر قالبا من ضمن الاف القوالب و الاخرى التي تختفي وتتمنى و تريد وتشتهي وتحلم وتريد الانعتاق من كل تلك القيود ومن ضمنها القيد الفيزيائي الذي يربط جسدها بالارض و تنطبق عليه قوانين الجذب وقوانين الطبيعة رواية جميلة جدا لا توفيها الكلمات حقها

اول روايه،اقرأها لنوال سعداوي وصراحه مااتمنى تكون الاخيره
ماحبيتها لهذه الروايه بذات تكررار الكلام وشعور بالملل
واحس�� الصفحات حتى انهيها بسرعه
قد تكون الروايه جميله ولكن لاني لم اتعود على اسلوب الكاتبه

Many will say that this book is about a rebel in making but in reality this books is about becoming true self.

Precisely, this books is about inner fight of a girl. A girl who becomes a woman and later finds out that there is another woman residing inside her.

The woman that is residing inside her wants to live life according to her own terms. However, the woman outside is submissive and lives the life according to terms set by her family and the system.

Everyone told her what they wanted. No one asked her what she wanted.

In reality, this story is of every third person where one has to live according to wishes of other people. But the gravity of wishes varies at large. Unfortunately, women have to carry this variance at larger grounds than men.

Now this woman's inner fight to realise her desires lead Bahiah Shaheen, the main character of the book, to become a woman who break the chains. Hence become rebel for many.

But in true sense, she finds the inner true self of hers and starts living on her own terms.

I wish and pray, everyone of you get a chance to balance your life and you become a formidable force.

I didn’t get along with El-Saadawi’s most famous novel but this one had a different translator so I decided to give it a try. By the 12% mark, while appreciating the feminist portrayal of the protagonist, I was so nauseated by the overly poetic prose—the metaphor diarrhea—that my doctor ordered me to bail.

أدبيًا: استهوتني الرواية الأسلوب الفني راق لي جدًا، رغم النهاية المبتورة التي نزعتني نزع عن الرواية واخرجتني بعنف من جوها والتي هي غير مناسبة إطلاقًا.
فكرة الرواية: راق لي تعزيز الاستقلالية لدى الفتاة والتفكير خارج الصندوق، والنقد الواضح للنمط السائد للمرأة والذي تعمل على تعزيزه المرأة ذاتها، أنها خلقت لإسعاد الرجل...
ولكنني رأيت التضارب الواضح في الشخصية تجد المبررات لذاتها حين تقيم علاقة غير شرعية مع أحدهم لكن عندما يمارسها الآخرين يدخلون لديها في قائمة الاتهامات والسلوك المنحط!!!!
ثم كيف اندمجت فجأة في مظاهرة بدون أي مقدمات، بدون أن تزرع بداخلي قيمة أو مبدأ يحرك هذه الفتاة؟!! لا أدري كيف استشعرت أنها لا تسعى نحو المظاهرة بذاتها ولكنها تريد ان تنقلب على حياتها الغير مفهومة لديها!!! وحتى نهاية الرواية لا اعتقد أن الفتاة وجدت نفسها!!!
جميل أن الشخصية تعمل عقلها في تفاصيل حياتها، ولكنها رغم ذلك تركت للعاطفة أن تحكمها في أهم مشهد كان يجب أن تعمل عقلها فيه!!!
احداث الرواية أوحت لدي أنها في بلد أجنبي، بالرغم من استخدامها لمصطلحات عربية كالترام وقصر العيني وغيرها...
سأكمل قراءتي لكتابات نوال,,

تحكي صفحات هذا الكتاب عن فتاة تبلغ الثامنة عشر لكنها تعجز عن تحديد هويتها الحقيقية كما أنها لا تحس بانوثتها، بهية التي تحارب الكل والمجتمع وافكارهم السائدة لاكتشاف هويتها الحقيقية، تتطرق نوال السعداوي الى بعض الافكار البالية والتي تتربع على عرش مجتمعي يقضي بطمس الهوية الانثوية ولاغلاق فوهة كلامية صادرة من المراة. كما تطرح الكاتبة فكرة ان الانسان لا يختار ما يريده في هذه الحياة بل تفرض عليه ضغوطات حياتية تجبره على الخضوع لتقاليد وأفكار لم يخترها ولا يريدها من الاصل..رواية ممتعة جدا مع تكرار بعض الكلمات للتأكيد على الوضعية المزرية التي تعيشها الانثى في هذا المجتمع.

مهما كنت معارضًا لأفكار الدكتورة نوال لا يمكنك إنكار الإنسانة الجميلة التي تعيش في حروفها وسطورها
رواية رائعة تآخذك لعالم آخر .. عالم "بهية" التي إستطاعت أن تكون "حقيقية" أخيرًا بعد ص��اع طويل
أنصح بها.

Bahiya Shaheen is not the person narrating this story, who carries the name Bahiya Shaheen. Bahiya follows the rules, while the other woman, who can’t exist and cannot, surely, bear any other name, strays further and further from the form that must be maintained, the obedience given by Bahiya, whose body embodies her. They share that: they are not like the other women, who walk with their knees together, as if to prevent something precious from falling. Our two women wear trousers, she separates her legs with confidence when she walks. This contemptuous tone towards other women might be heard as a failure of solidarity. But I think a space is left open to read it as a critique of the performance these women feel they are required to give.

Her rebellion is both momentous and slight. Nawal El-Saadawi imbues silent moments of decision with the force of catastrophe. Our two women seem to drift into that rebellion, political activism, love, self-consciousness. Nawal captures the intermittent quality of self-awareness, both its intensity and vagueness, with langorous, fluid language. Reality seems unstable because she maintains the absolute interiority, a stream of consciousness in the third person. Nawal is the third woman, quietly giving shape to the thoughts of the others. Formally, the novel is challenging, breaking with conventions of authorial omniscience and narrative coherence, but not so drastically that the threads of story and character fray apart and can’t be easily followed (see my ‘abandoned’ shelf for a few books where that does happen for me)

The body of Bahiya Shaheen is the site of her knowledge, of both women’s knowledge. The body preoccupies, and is intensely feared by authorities. The bodies of others loom and impose themselves, but our two women find strength and confidence in her body, which seems to her powerful, unbreakable and healthy, like the indomitable selfhood of Khady Demba in Three Strong Women. She accepts, instead of the fear and horror socially projected onto bodies, and the objectifying fragmentation of the dissections she witnesses as an anatomy student, her own embodied experience and wholeness. Although she is double, there is no Cartesian divorce of mind and body. She is body, consciousness is embodied. We have not two women in one body but two women in one, one woman.

Why? Why two? The man she loves, Saleem, does not see two women. He collapses them, naming them both Bahiya. This changes our two women’s feeling about her name, temporarily, when he is present or anticipated, she attaches the name to herself, she feels marked and made unique by it. Saleem is not capable of grasping her split experience. He accuses her of mediocrity, because Bahiya Shaheen is obedient and ‘mediocre’. It’s frustrating to me that she validates his knowledge of her, but her self-knowledge is uneven, nebulous as yet. Communication opens between them, an ocean of potential.

Two Women in One is a feminist book. Its most overtly feminist scene happens after our two women has been arrested. Her fate is decided by a meeting of old men. This is the kind of laugh-or-cry moment that is shared for the purposes of feminist pedagogy everywhere. But Nawal El-Saadawi goes much deeper than this. It would be hard to find any book that examines a young woman’s conflicted sense of her body in a patriarchal society, a society that (like all sexist cultures such as white culture in the UK) fears the sexual potential of women, with more sustained, critical attention. Our two women perform the obedient Bahiya Shaheen, while internally improvising another script, a rogue script to recreate herself, herself who paints and fights oppression, who never cuts up bodies but represents them whole.

Can I envision a world where Bahiya Shaheen can be one other than through the naming of Saleem, the shelter of men? Can our two women create it? And is it affordable, can she survive the act?

أول ما أقرأ لدكتور نوال، وبالتأكيد لن يكون آخر ما أقرأ لها. أؤمن أنها وضعت روحها في تلك الرواية وليس بضع كلمات، فتصدمك بصدقها وشفافية أفكارها وجرأتها على لسان بطلتها بهية شاهين، التى تمثل كل امرأة، سأضع هنا بعض اقتباسات قد لمستني من الرواية.

“إلى كل فتى وفتاة في ربيع العمر، لعلهما يدركان قبل فوات الأوان أن طريق الحب ليس مفروشًا بالورد، وأن الزهور المغمضة حين تتفتح في ضوء الشمس لأول مرة تسقط فوقها خراطيم النحل تمتص ورقها الناعم، فإذا ما استسلمت الزهور انسحقت، وإذا قاومت واستبدلت الورق الناعم بشوك نافر مدبب، استطاعت أن تحيا وسط النحل الجائع.”

“كانت تبحث عن الموت في جثث المشرحة، لكن الموت كالحياة لا يعيش في الجثث.

الموت لا يعيش إلا في ذهن حي، شديد الحياة، قادر على التقاط أدنى الأحاسيس وأكثرها اختفاءً وسرية، كذلك الإحساس بالضياع الذي تحسه ذرة هواء سابحة في الكون تقاوم الضياع بين ملايين الذرات، أو كتلك الرغبة المحيطة التي تحسها قطرة ماء تقاوم الذوبان في ماء البحر. المقاومة المجنونة اليائسة في قمة الإحباط، تصنع الاستسلام الكامل كالسكون الأبدي.”

دى كان أول مرة أقرء لنوال السعداوى , وكانت رواية مش كتاب ,
فى البداية كنت حاسة بشىء من الملل بسبب تكرار بعض المفردات بعينها , لكن بعد كده عرفت ان تكرارها كان واجب فى سياق الراوية للتأكيد على حالة نفسية معينة ,
الأحداث نفسها مكنتش مفاجئة ليا , لكن المفاجىء والصادم ليا فعلا كانت التفاصيل اللى نوال السعداوى بتحكى فيها , بمنتهى الدقة , والوضوح , والألم

نوال السعداوى هنا استخدمت نفس اسلوب الجراح اللى بيفتح الجرح ويوجع المريض ويمكن يخليه ينزف عشان ينضف الجرح , عرت حقايق كتير جدا وكشفتها قدام القارىء بمنتهى الشجاعة والمنطق
-فيه أفكار معينة حسيت فيها ببعض التطرف من ناحية الكاتب لكن لم تخل بالسياق العام

أهو الحب الذي جعلها قادرة على إدراك كل هذه الأحاسيس؟ و أدركت عن يقين أنه الحب. الحب الحقيقي الذي يجعل الإنسان قادراً على أن يحب كل شيء، و كل الناس، و يستطيع أن يفتح ذراعيه و يحتضن الأرض و السماء و الشجر، و حين يفتح الإنسان عينيه و ينظر بين ذراعيه يرى أنه يحتضن جسداً واحداً محدداً، يعرف ملامحه و حدوده الخارجية عن ظهر قلب، و يستطيع أن يلتقطه من بين ملايين الأجساد السابحة في الكون، و يميزه، يميزه بكيانه الخاص وعينيه الخاصتين القادرتين على رؤيته و التقاطه من بين البشر.

I felt like this one was obscure for obscurity's sake. Not my cup of tea, although some of the prose was very beautiful. I don't think I'd read it again, but I'm glad I read it once. If you want my copy, you can have it! :-)

i suppose the translators failed to capture the original feel of the novel , liked the author's ideas but not the diction , i would most likely read other works by saadawi but this time i'll make sure they're in Arabic

This book is by an Egyptian physician and feminist. It was really interesting, though I admit parts were hard for me to understand.

البطلة المركزية بهية شاهين ، طالبة طب تبلغ من العمر ثمانية عشر عامًا والرواية بتدور في القاهرة وهي ابنة مسؤول مصري بارز في مجال الصحة العامة ولكنه
شخصية متخلفة مسيطرة ذكورية مستبدة مشؤومة ، ضد استقلالها كأي أب رجعي وبيقف قدام إرادتها كحاجز ضخم وقدام قرارتها كلها وبيتحكم في المصروف اللى بتاخده ولما ترسب بيكون ليه هو القرار الأخير كأب ذكوري في تحديد من تتزوج؟ وده كون شخصية أخرى حرة جواها سمتها أحيانا بالشيطانة ومضطربة من الانفصام بينها وبين بهية شاهين وده كون صراع نفسي كبير وانقسام بين الطاعة والتمرد واحباط كبير وهيمس تمردها الفن ويقترن بيه وهتقابل سليم الشخصية الغريبة في معرض فني وتاخدنا نوال السعداوي في رحلة لاستكشاف الذات ومعرفتها وتحقيق التمرد السري في ظل الحبس الاجتماعي الرهيب ده ونلاحظ المفارقة بين بداية الرواية وبين السير فمع سير الرواية تبدأ بالتحرر واحدة واحدة مع انها لازال بها هذا الحب لابيها وإن الحب لا يتقابل مع التمرد
رغم إنه بيعنفها ويرمي الورقة في حدث في الرواية وان ده انحراف وملوش فايدة ككل النظرات الى الابداع الادبي او الفني من الشخصيات السلطوية ورغم ذلك بتستمر في الرسم وتدخل المعرض الفني بالجامعة وتشارك وتتحدى وترفض الهويات الجاهزة للمجتمع ورغم ان عدد قليل بس اللى بيحضر فبترمِز نوال السعداوي لقيمة الفن عند المجتمع الجاهل وبتتسائل على لسان بهية ما قيمة أي شيء فني؟ ولكن الفن سيساعد بهية على التحرر والتمرد لطاقته وتاريخه الطويل في ده ويحررها من حياتها الروتينية المكبوتة
وبتمارس الجنس مع سليم فهو الشخصية الوحيدة الذي دخل رأسها ولمس الشيطانة كما تسميها

اول مره اقوم بقراءه كتاب لدكتوره نوال السعداوي
اسلوب مميز فريد فإن الاحداث ان حاولت سردها بنظره سطحيه لن تاخذ منك سوي صفحات قليله و لكن ليس باسلوب دكتوره نوال فهي لا تركز علي سطحيه الاحداث بل انت تقرا ما يدور بداخل بطله القصه تقرا مشاعرها التي استطاعت الكاتبه سردها باسلوب معبر و مدهش جدا
كانت الكاتبه تعيد عليك جمل مرات عده و لكن ليس من فراغ بل لتاكيد اهميه هذه المشاعر فإن مشاعرك تتكرر و تلح عليك
كان هناك جمل تشدك و تسكن بعقلك من ابرزها
-لكن الموت كالحياة لا يعيش في الجثث. الموت لا يعيش إلا في ذهن حي، شديد الحياة، قادر على التقاط أدنى الأحاسيس وأكثرها اختفاءً وسرية.

-ورغم أنهم نائمون إلا أن حركة عيونهم من تحت الجفن تكشف لها أن نومهم ليس حقيقيًّا، وحين يفتحون عيونهم وينظرون إليها تدرك أن يقظتهم أيضًا غير حقيقية، ويصبح كل شيء فيهم ومن حولهم غير حقيقي. إذا انفرجت شفاههم وظهرت أسنانهم لا تعرف إذا ما كانوا يبتسمون أم يكشرون، وإذا حركوا أصابعهم وهم يصعدون الترام أو يهبطون منه لا تعرف إذا ما كانوا يتبادلون التحيات أم التهديدات ويصبح كل شيء مختلطًا، والشيء ونقيضه يتماثلان، فالابتسامة كالتكشيرة، والتحية كالتهديد، والصدق كالكذب، والفضيلة كالرذيلة، والحب كالكراهية.

This is a book about a girl’s sense of self and identity in the face of the world, of death, of society and its expectations. One could say it’s also about that numbness that comes to you and you can only shake with some big actions. It’s also about the girl growing up and becoming a woman and facing what a woman has to endure in the world. But in the same time the book is also about the world, about life and politics. It starts very vague and detached and abstract, but by the end it grows very strong and vivid and painful, it loses its innocence. It’s a beautiful book, somewhat like “An Unnecessary Woman”, but in the same time not at all…
