I've said it before. It's tough being a gay warlock in Washington D.C. And hanging out with my vampire buddy hasn't made it any easier. A tentacled demon killing people near the Washington Monument followed by a naked werewolf puppy on my doorstep? Really? This isn't something the local pound can take care of, so once again it was on me to figure it out.
Sure, the vampire helped me out a bit, but hey, you all know who the real hero of this story is, right?
I am the author of The Warlock Case files, an urban fantasy series set in the Washington DC Metro area. The series focuses on a warlock and vampire and the various supernatural creatures (both good and not) who inhabit the nation’s capitol.
I have been professionally writing fiction since 2011, but I've been writing and editing for most of her career. In addition to being a writer, I'm a networking and social media coach, and the author of The Enthusiastic Networker, a book on business networking.
Another gift from my lovely Secret Santa, December 2014 4.5 stars oh these are a lot of fun. This time Dafydd the warlock finds a werewolf puppy in front of his appartment. Paul, his vampire friend and crime fighting partner, introduces him to werewolf society and they try to discover what has been going on. Again not a romance, though Dafydd has a new boyfriend, the relationship between the warlock and vampire is definitely getting a little more personal
I keep doing this. I start with the wrong book in a series. I don’t do it on purpose, but it turned out The Case of the Werewolf Puppy was actually the second in The Warlock Case Files.
The good thing, however, is that there was enough information and action that I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything by starting with Book 2. It made for a good stand-alone book within the series.
Author Juli Monroe has a great voice with a very easy, casual feel about it. It’s almost as though a friend is telling you a story rather than an author trying to put a series of actions together. Getting inside the head of Dafydd, the protagonist, is also interesting. He’s a warlock, but it’s more about rituals and potions. That doesn’t mean he is bad. In fact, Dafydd goes through some serious soul searching as he learns more about evil and how far he is willing to go in the name of doing the right thing.
The Case of the Werewolf Puppy has an interesting premise with Dafydd finding a werewolf child. The problem is he and his friends learn the child is an infected werewolf and not a natural one. That is a big no-no.
Dafydd and his friends aren’t typical crime fighters. He is a gay warlock. His evil-fighting partner is a vampire, Paul, who doesn’t want to drink from humans. His best friend, Laura, is a quadriplegic who was paralyzed in a car crash in high school. And they bring in a local werewolf pack leader for help.
They mesh well and have easy conversations. Even though, they are all dealing with their own daily struggles, there is still enough light in their lives that it won’t allow the darkness to consume them.
I started with Book 2, and I fully intend on heading back to the first book of the series to see how Dafydd and Paul’s partnership began.

With the amount of paranormal books to get through, the hope is that they will be different enough from each other to make the read worthwhile.
The Case of the Werewolf Puppy, which is the second book in The Warlock Case Files, was worth the read.
The Case of the Werewolf Puppy was a quick and enjoyable read. It almost felt as though a friend was telling a story rather than reading a novel. The author has a great voice.
The main character Dafydd is probably what helped with the flow of the story. He’s warlock that is more than rituals and potions, but also someone trying to find his way in the world that is much bigger and nastier than he knew.
The premise was intriguing from the start with Dafydd finding a werewolf child. Turns out he is an infected werewolf and not a naturally born one, which can cause huge problems for the werewolf society.
Dafydd and his friends try to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t superheroes or the sort that goes hunting for baddies – at least not initially. Dafydd is a gay warlock whose crime-fighting partner resists the urge to drink from humans. They get help from a quadriplegic and a local werewolf pack leader.
The gang meshes well and has easy conversations. It was entertaining because Dafydd allow himself to enjoy life even as he learns about the darkness in the world.
