This book provides a really wide angle view of dog cancer and includes everything from the science behind cancer, ways to deal with the emotional trauma of diagnosis, to the skinny on chemo and radiation, and everything inbetween. Dr. Dressler and Dr. Ettinger also discuss natural and holistic treatments that have shown some promise in studies, including changes of diet, nutraceuticals, supplements and holistic medicine.
While I'm not thrilled that I needed to read this book, I found it very helpful on many levels. Throw away all your preconceived notions of dog cancer and cancer treatments and read this book with an open mind if your dog is diagnosed with any type of cancer.
If your vet tells you your dog has cancer and has a "not much can be done about it" sort of attitude, ignore that nonsense and read this book.
Dr. Dressler's "Full Spectrum Cancer Care" covers conventional treatments, supplements (warning: he does push his expensive Apopcaps supplement), ways to reduce your dog's stress, managing side effects, dealing with your own emotions, how to come up with and analyze your treatment plan, and so much more. The most important chapter is on diet. I remain convinced this had the biggest impact (next to supplements and medication). We were told 6 months at best and got 18 instead.
Let's be honest - not a book anyone would want to have to read... ever. But it teaches what you need to know to be your dog's champion through an array of tests and vet visits and an long series of very difficult choices. I know now that no matter how much time the Newm has left with us, he will be well fed with home cooked meals, supported with an array of medical and alternative treatments, and he will be loved in the way that he has always instinctively loved everyone - with reckless abandon. There will be no moment taken for granted.
I really wish I didn't have to read this book, but here we are. I lost my Sparky to a terminal cancer in 2015, so I was devastated to learn that my Coco had mammary cancer. Since this type of cancer is different from the one Sparky had, I felt like I needed to do my research before Coco's first appointment with the oncologist. I definitely feel better prepared and have an idea of what to expect and possible outcomes. The chapters on nutrition and natural supplements were very helpful, and I have printed off information to discuss with the oncologist. With Sparky's cancer there was no chance of fighting it. Coco's is different, and I feel like this book has given me hope that we can beat this.
Great book, but no bargain here! Their price on a USED copy is more than the author's price for a brand new one!! Go to the author's site at http://www.dogcancerblog.com/ to buy it for $23.95!
Crash course you need to turn to when your best friend gets the heart-shattering diagnosis of cancer. Quickly and succinctly teaches you everything you need to know about canine cancer, and honestly you learn a ton about cancer in general. Step by step guide on how to first calm down, keep your cool, and keep your dog’s spirits up, then go into vet and oncology appointments confidently and effectively (honestly wish I had taken the time to read it before going to my first few appointments)! Not all vets and oncologists are created equally! Make sure you have a board-certified oncologist in your team! Love the full spectrum approach to attack cancer from all angles, using a wide variety of approaches - as long as my dog is fighting, I will do everything I can to fight alongside him.
Subracted one star only because I felt the author pushed his supplement a bit too much (I actually purchased it and it was too harsh on my dog’s stomach) and at times the book felt salesy in that way. Also, my dog has inoperable hemangiosarcoma (HSA) which has a horrible prognosis. I know more research needs to be done and this book can’t work miracles, but I wish it provided more options for HSA specifically, especially when a splenectomy is not applicable.
Nobody would WANT to read this book, obviously, but if you're in the unfortunate position of needing it, there is really no better all-around resource to be found. Many websites and blogs dealing with cancer in dogs tend to take a very partisan view - either they're in support of Western methods like chemotherapy and won't even consider that homeopathy could have something to offer a dog, or vice versa. Not this book. While acknowledging that chemotherapy and surgery are often the best chances we have to give our dogs a long survival time, the authors also go over supplements and dietary changes that can help improve quality of life.
The one thing I didn't like was the over-promotion of Dr. Dressler's Apocaps dog supplement in the supplements chapter, and the glowing Amazon reviews included there - would have been better if the mention of this product had been limited to one paragraph. But I can overlook this because there really is not a better guide than this to navigating canine cancer.
Technically, I'm not finished reading it from beginning to end. I started to read it this way, but it's a huge book (and that's even with half of it being dedicated to descriptions of all the specific cancers) so now I'm treating it like something I need to dip into from time to time. Very comprehensive, though I wish Dr. Dressler would revisit it again as I know some things have changed since the last edition. I wish this was not something I had to deal with, but it helps to have someone talk about all the things such dog guardians are dealing with.
This is a gigantic book and I only read a very small portion of it, but it is an outstanding effort and very informative for someone like me who was suffering with a dog who had terminal cancer. The book addresses just about everything and not all of it applied to my dog or me. I don’t recommend reading it cover to cover, but picking and choosing certain chapters or passages that you are interested in.
This helped me tremendously in treating and dealing with my dog's cancer. I learned of an amazing herb from this dog cancer doctor which gave my baby 6 months longer than anyone expected and eased her discomfort to the point of chasing the water from the hose again. Dr Dressler gives the reader many options for care beyond the traditional horrifying chemo. Wonderful book.
Absolute must-read for anyone who has a dog that has been diagnosed, or may be diagnosed, with cancer. I cannot stress how helpful this book has been! There are SO many things you can do to help your dog fight cancer and improve his quality of life. This book has enabled me to confidently make decisions regarding my dog's treatment and to be proactive in doing everything I can on my end.
VERY informative! Easy to read. To the point. The dietary changes are interesting and easy to follow as well as changing your pets (cats included) dishes from plastic and stainless steel to glass or ceramic. I'm not sure if new health findings have been made or new technology has been developed since it was published. Nevertheless, I highly recommend if your dog has cancer.
Tons of info. Almost too much. My big issue was the format. I absolutely hate all the extra info boxes on each page. Especially when there is a half page of ‘box info’ and a half page of the actual book. And neither end in a full sentence! Do I turn the page? Or read the second half of the page and then turn to finish two incomplete sentences? My brain doesn’t work like that.
Educational book on full spectrum treatment for canine cancer. I loved that it showed treatments from all angles and reviewed the why behind each treatment option. Great resource for those of us going through this with our fur babies.
If there ever was a book i wish i din't have to read, this would be that book. However, that being said, this book is full of information any pet parent who's charge is facing this most dreaded disease should have. It offers insight to standard allopathic care, as well as holistic and nutritional. While it gives many options to consider, i'm dinging it a star because the one thing i wasn't keen on is the recommendations one should purchase "supplements" that financially benefit the author. I want only information, not a sales pitch.
Not a book you WANT to need, but I found it very helpful when my dog was diagnosed with cancer. I used it to explain in more detail medications/side effects, as well as a resource when I forgot what my vet explained. I frequently referred to the chapter on signs of pain/pain management, and toward the end of my dog's life I found the section on euthanasia/saying goodbye to be helpful. While nothing beats a great relationship with your vet - this is a great resource.
it was quite interesting book considering cancer in dogs, but despite its complex nature I had strange feeling that it was more about owner approach and budget isssue, then well being of the animal. Anyway it is very helpfull when cancer hit home and your dog needs help on many levels.
I really wish I didn't need to read this book, but am very glad this helpful resource is available! I have been following the Facebook page for updated articles too. I am hoping the information in this book will help ease the Canine Cancer journey for my family and my beautiful puppy.
J Crossley This is an awesome guide for dog cancer. It is very thorough, and i found it extremely helpful when dealing with cancer in my beloved Ramsey. I would highly recommend this book if you are facing canine cancer.
