This is a series that isn’t awful, and it’s quite readable, but there are just too many irritants to rate it more highly.
There’s no getting away from the fact that initially I found Claire intensely frustrating. Nobody in their right mind would put up with the behaviour she does...and her reaction is just so unlikely.
Once we know a bit more about Morganville it’s clear to see that there’s a story here. The ideas behind it, and the hints of who’s in charge, make it more intriguing. To really love this series I get the feeling you need to have quite positive feelings about our four key characters. Sadly Claire just annoys me and though I sense more to her is on its way, it’s not enough to offset the stuff I dislike.
In book four I really liked the introduction of some history and a sense of the challenge faced by Amelie. Our pantomime villains in Bishop and his minions don’t feature enough to really scare, but there’s no doubt they’re a threat.
