Business consultant and psychological coach, James Borg, specialises in the areas of interpersonal skills, management and business development. His career spans the spectrum of advertising, sales, marketing and journalism, He conducts regular workshops on persuasion; how to develop a super memory; and ‘positive psychology’.

James Borg became interested in magic and 'mind-reading' at the age of 9 and subsequently was - a few years later - admitted as one of the youngest-ever members of the Magic Circle. In his book Persuasion he reveals that there is a lot we can learn from magician's tricks to help us gain persuasive powers to use in work and life.

After graduating in London, with degrees in both economics and psychology, James Borg had a successful career in advertising, sales, marketing and journalism. This equipped him well for his current role as a work psychologist, business consultant and trainer in persuasion techniques, interpersonal skills and memory improvement. With his fascination for the human mind from a young age (he was admitted as one of the youngest ever members of The Magic Circle after his demonstration of 'mind-reading' and memory feats) he performed occasionally with a routine known as 'The mind and magic of James Borg'. Tuning in to other people's thoughts - and being aware of our own - is his prescription for success in all aspects of life. He's often invited on BBC radio and was selected as a Harvard Business Review author for May 2009.

I don't normally read self-help books, but I picked this one up because it seemed to relate to my own problems rather more than most books in this subject area.

So did it help me? Well, yes to a certain extent because it helped me formulate and quantify what I already knew about my own self-destructive behaviours. No, because being aware of what I was doing to myself does not actually help me change those behaviours in the long-term. It probably didn't help that I speed read this book, and that I didn't go into it with the right frame of mind to actually want to change my habits.

So, it is a book that could be useful for some people, it just wasn't that useful for me.

I have to knock two stars off because I don’t find it effective and convincing enough to change my habits, let alone life. However, to some extent, this book covers some basic things about brain science which is fascinating to know. Plus, it’s informative, captivating and well-written. I like the fact that there is a coffee break section at the end of each chapter which basically bundle up some important concepts. All in all, I like this book. It has won my pundit even though I don’t agree with everything the author has to say. It’s subjective and I respect that. Opinion is not fact.

This book was the first psychology self-help book I read. I found it quite interesting with the new insights about the mind that it provided.

These are the messages that I appreciated the most:
1) You are outside your mind. You have control of it.
2) You can't have two thoughts at the same time, which makes it easy to replace a negative thought by a positive one.
3) You can't experience a feeling without a thought.

What I didn't appreciate much in this book is how redundant it was. It could have been easily a 50-page book. Yet, the author has extended the main messages and repeated them over and over again, rendering the book full of repetitive ideas, with some new information spread here and there in every chapter that you read as you move forward with it.

Lot of useful advice in this, one to come back to. The basic point is watch your thoughts, don't judge them, don't act on them, accept them, let them be what they are as they flow through you, then you can appreciate them for what they are in reality and go about changing them, and so avoiding usual chain reactions of thought, belief, judgment, behavior. Sounds easy, but is very difficult when you are emotional, angry, etc.

This book makes your life much easier. You just start realizing that what has been bothering you and changing your moods for the last decade is actually your "thinking"!

These are what I learnt:
1. Thinking should not be considered as something that happens passively. I can learn to be in control of how I think.
2. My thoughts at a subconscious level are like the strong undercurrents at the bottom of a seemingly placid ocean.
3. The way people and situations trigger thoughts and feelings in me tells me how my mind has been conditioned by past experiences.
4. I can change the way I think and feel if I learn the strategy for doing so.

This book is quite simple and straightforward. If your life swarmed with negative thoughts all day, and you did realized that you're having problem with it, and you want to cut them off, then this book is good for you. It teaches you step by step on how to control your negative thoughts. I've just started practicing them, and yup...i can already see some improvement and control over my own mind.

Well...it's not simple as I thought. It's the science of thinking rather than physiology. Understanding how the brain works is the next level of thinking. This book is deserved more readers. Let's come with me :-)

I read it once a year to remind myself of the core principles and can’t get enough of it !

Amazing book! This book explains how to think in the right way. It's not about how to think positively every time, but how to manage negative thoughts and encounter them.

Some basic, obvious, but good points.
I hope it can help resolve my "distorted thinking" through applying its main principles. Let's give it a try!
