After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.
So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.

★★★★! Slack (Prequel). Ford Aston has settled back into the life of Dom playing with his pets!
This Duet is a spinoff of the Rook and Ronin trilogy. Ford Aston first appeared in trilogy, but you don’t have to read in order to enjoy his story. Here is reading order:
Prequel: Slack
Book 1: Taut
Rutherford Aston, Ford is the anti-social guy in the threesome of Ronin (trilogy), Spencer (spin-off) and Ford. Diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (AD) as a child he grew up privileged and very much loved and nurtured by his parents, but a bit of the social outcast amongst his peers.
As documented in trilogy this threesome is wild with them dabbling in all kinds of businesses while making a fortune. This has afforded them a comfortable lifestyle.
Partly due to his Asperger and his anti-social personality he has accepted and settled into the lifestyle of a Dom with his assistant sending subs aka “pets” to his home to play with.
But Ford isn’t happy. He is frustrated because he’s in love with his best friend Ronin’s girl, Rook and nothing seems to be able to soothe his love and desire; Not sex, not excitement, not danger and most of all not the friendship he has with Ronin and Rook.
In Slack (Prequel to Taut) we follow him on Christmas Day as he enjoys his “pet”, catches up with friends and family, goes on a bit of excursion. But most importantly while reflecting on his miserable situation! Something has got to change!

Rutherford Aston, Ford is a compelling hero. Even if you haven’t met him in Ronin & Rook I predict he’ll wrap himself around your heart quickly in spite of or maybe because of his anti-social ways, which of course are attributed to his Asperger.
Eight words to describe Ford: Vulnerable, reflective, blunt, introvert, private, commanding, perceptive and extremely smart..
Slack ends with a huge cliff-hanger leading us right to Ford’s story in book 1: Taut where he will hopefully meet a heroine ready and able to take him on!
Compelling hero! Hawt sex scenes! Great opening for Taut!

5 I’ll be Ford’s pet stars!!!
FORD! From the first moment I met Ford in the Rook and Ronin series, I fell hard. I don’t know what it is about him. He’s a little different, and I love all his strange and wonderful qualities!
I loved getting to ‘spend the day’ with Ford. Getting into his head, seeing all the many sides of him. Ford is a complex guy. Not only do we see the normal Ford, we get to see a bit of his sweet side. I’m so happy that Ford is getting his own spin off book! This was a great novella/prequel and small teaser into what we have to look forward to in Ford’s book coming out next month. I, for one, can’t wait to read more about FORD ♥ ♥ ♥

5 gagging for it stars
Ford’s the guy we all were a little gun shy with at first, the guy that made us question his intentions and ultimately made us question why the bad guy doesn't get the freaking girl! But there was no way to avoid falling for him once we met him in Manic & Panic. And now after getting a new glimpse into him in Slack I think it’s safe to say there won’t be a pair of dry panties out there after we get to see him in all his glory in TAUT.
This is a day in the life of Ford. We get a taste of his sexual disposition, we see him interact with his ‘pet’ and we see his interactions with a sweet little girl that shows there may just be more to him than what he wants us to believe.
JA Huss has created a fantastic character in Ford. He is every bit the Hero that we all love. He’s the jerk, the dominant lover full of kink, he has a softer side we see when he falls for the girl he can’t have and in Slack we him at every angle. This was a little slice of heaven to get me through until TAUT is released.
I cannot wait to get my hands on this book. Ford completely stole the show in Manic & Panic along with my heart all the while soaking our panties with anticipation.
I was lucky enough to have been able to beta read this one for the author.

Ford is the son of a psychiatrist, socially unacceptable genius, con-man hacker, film producer, and this reader LOVES him madly!!
This novella is NOT to be missed by Ford fans. This story shows all of his MANY sides including his interactions amongst his friends, family, and a young girl he meets named Sasha.
I have to say he is one of the most fascinating fictional characters that I have read to date. Remember his pov from Panic? UGH his feelings for Rook just broke my heart.
I expected this novella to pretty much be about Ford and his play with his pet (submissive) but this book had so much more storyline to it.

Things with his pet end on a very interesting note and I’m hoping their paths cross again.
Now onto Sasha Alean Cherlin, a young girl who makes friends with Ford. This Kid was terrific and I sure hope she will be in his novel along with his assistant Pam who I am very curious about as well as his “Pet”.
Overall, J.A.Huss delivered a truly intriguing novella that will have fans counting down the days till Taunt: The Ford Book (A Rook and Ronin Spinoff)

SLACK: A Day in the Life of Ford Aston, is a prequel to TAUT: The Ford Book, and can be read as a standalone novella.As a Ford fan since he made his appearance in Manic I knew I had to know more about him.
Ford doesn’t celebrate Christmas Eve or Christmas for that matter. He’s bound and determined to avoid anything that deals with the holidays at all cost. One little brace-faced girl starts to melt his Grinch heart. Sasha and Ford Forever. XXOO, heart, heart, flower.

Wow, this book really is something else!
Ford Ashton is so much more than I thought he was...
Why he has his 'pets'....
I loved him at the end of Panic and if I didn't live Ronin so much I really wish he could be the one who ended up with the girl... He truely deep down has a heart of Gold....
"Rook, of course. She’s not a freak. Her sick ex tried to make her into one, but she’s not a freak. She wants the fairytale—I’d go for that if I could have Rook. I would. I’d give her the fairytale if she wanted it. I’m not against the fairytale. I’m not against marriage and all that shit. I’m just picky. I want what I want and I refuse to settle. I’d rather be alone than settle."
In this short novella we get I delightful insight into the life of Ford and nothing can be better then getting into his head...
The guy we all thought was hard actually isn't and it only takes one person in your life to change every rule you've ever had...
So there is only one way I can describe what his feeling, using my most special guy off-course....
"If you touch me I’ll touch you back. I’ll cup your face and kiss your mouth. I’ll hold you close and make you choose me.”
My heart breaks for him so much and I'd I could take his pain away and film the void I would!
"I’ll ruin everything if you touch me. I’ll ruin us. I’ll ruin this. I’ll ruin you, just like you said. I’ll ruin you and I’ll ruin your life. And I love you too much to ruin you. So I’m leaving.”"
"You’ve changed me, Rook. You make me weak, you make me stumble, you make me fall, and even though I know you’ll pick me up if I ask you to, it’s not enough. I want you to make me stronger, just like I made you. I want it all or I want nothing. And since I can’t have it all, I’ll take nothing.”

When J.A. Huss created her series staring Rook and Ronin, she also provided us when another element... someone very special... someone who teased us... played with our affection and emotions... someone who could be very very dangerous while standing in place...
That someone is Ford. Ford is part of Ronin's past and now present. He is the producer of the biker show Rook has been a part of. He has taken Rook, shown her how to be independent, study, grasp all that she has wanted and to work to do it on her own. He saw in her all the hurt and torture she had endured and worked to make it safe for her to confront her memories and the realities of it safely.
Ford did all of these things for Rook and then made a life changing decision New Year's Eve.
We experience the days leading up to that monumental action in this novella.
It is Christmas Eve and Ford is just trying to make it through the day.
We see him with a pet, meet a long time connection and possibly witness another female fall under his spell. The day ends with the same ending of the book, Panic, yet every time I have read this passage, it becomes more intense, more beautiful, more powerful, more Ford.
Ford's full length book, Taut, will becoming out in January... I will be in a Ford induced haze awaiting its release.

Wow Ford I just want to give you a big ole hug!!!
Ford is different. He's anti-social. He has pets. He's borderline criminal.
But he's also intriguing. And smart. And sexy. And despite what he thinks....he's caring.
He thinks he's in love with Rook.
Slack was a day in the life of Ford. Timeline wise it was Christmas Eve leading up to the big NYE reveal.
We get a look at Ford and one of his pets--and I have to wonder if we haven't seen the last of her. Ford assisting on a mission and meeting the intriguing Sasha--please tell me we'll get to see more of her. Ford's relationship with his mom. Ford's thoughts and feelings about Rook. Everything leading up to him deciding to give everything up.
There are many sides to Ford and all seem to be coming to a head. Will Ford be able to finally find his own happiness?
I must say, as the Tragic/Manic/Panic series progressed I fell more and more in love with Ford. He's definitely a favorite character of mine. I can't wait for him to find his HEA!

4.5 stars for the Prequel to Ford's full length book; "Slack" is just a taste of what a day with Ford looks like. This day happens to be Christmas, and I must say that I fell in love with Ford even more. There is just something about him that is vulnerable and lonely; even though he is quite the asshole. I mean, he has sex with women who he calls his "pets", and basically he doesn't even care enough about them to know their name. He also doesn't let them talk while the whole time they are in his apartment giving him what he wants sexually. How does a man like that end up being loved by so many readers? Well, I know that in my case there is an air of mystery surrounding him..and I am dying to find out exactly why Ford is the way he is. Yes, he has Asperger's; but I'm thinking that there is much more than meets the eye with him. It makes me sad that he is so much in love with his friend's woman, Rook; but he will never have her. It is the first time that Ford has ever felt anything for anyone...but he can't have her even though he loves her with every beat of his heart. *sigh* Even though he is untouchable, he stills has this desire deep down to be loved and accepted by HIS very own someone. I will admit; I want so badly to see that for him. This thought from Ford almost made me cry for him when I read it:
"So much happened today and I have no one to share it with. No one. I just want someone to listen to me for once."
The sadness that poured out of Ford after I read that, truly did break my heart for him. I am so eager to get on reading his full length book and find out who his heroine will be. All I keep thinking is that it will have to be someone very special to compete with the great Rook.
Once again, JA Huss has held my attention captivated by her brilliant writing. Even though this was a novella just giving us a glimpse into a day in the life of Ford; it packed a punch emotionally. It was nice too that there were cameos from all of the characters we have grown to love in the "Rook and Ronin" series. This is a spin off from that series, and it is such a treat to get a whole book about just Ford! I believe there is another two books after Ford's that will be about his partner in crime; Spencer. I am so pleased to have found out about this author; her stories are truly a treat for me to read. She includes everything I love in a great book; sex, susupence,drama,action,and of course, LOVE!

Ford Aston is a gorgeous, intelligent, complex man who I feel is a little lost. On the outside he is this confident, self centered guy who doesn't need anyone. On the inside he is a vulnerable, lonely man desperate to be loved. Ford doesn't like complicated emotions and doesn't do relationships. What Ford does is Pets. He gets satisfaction without having to put any effort into conversation or caring about someone else's feelings.
Anytime Ford has tried normal dating or caring it hasn't worked out for him. He has tried online dating, and going out on normal dates, and always finds them boring. He became friends with his best friend's girlfriend Rook, and fell hard for her, but she is taken. The one person he actually has real feelings for and wants, he can't have.
Ford has been a character in this series I have just adored! I love his sense of humor, and especially his kindness he attempts to hide. Ford has a huge heart, even though he has a poor self image. He seems to believe he is a freak, kind of weird, is lacking empathy, and just not that great of a person. I loved how we see how sweet and caring Ford actually is in this book. He really wants Rook to be happy, even if it isn't with him. He is also concerned about the twelve year old girl Sasha that he crosses paths with, and tries to mend his relationship with his mother. This book really lets us into his head, and shows he does care about others more than he lets on.
In this story Ford is just trying to make it through Christmas. He really isn't a big fan of the holidays, or anything touchy feely. He tries to fill the void with one of his pets, but that doesn't turn out so well. This pet is spunky, & I really liked her. I wouldn't mind him crossing paths with her again. He ends up finding himself with those he cares the most for after all. In the next book I hope that Ford finds love, and a real relationship with a HEA! :D

Bless Ford's freaky little heart! He's so strange but
He doesn't like showing emotion. The one thing he can control is his reactions.
He is anti-social and doesn't really like to be around people much.
Except for Rook.
Unfortunately even though he is in love with Rook she is taken by Ronin.
So since he can't have Rook, Ford just sticks with his pets....
Ford is hot though...and I mean H-O-T!
and deep down he's a good guy, so he will find someone to love him.

Ford Aston has intrigued me since he first graced the pages of Manic (Rook & Ronin #2). He was a bit player there, but shrouded in this sexy mysterious fog. I instantly wanted to know more about him.
Huss delivered a little more of Mr. Aston in Panic (Rook & Ronin #3) and it was enough to make me fall head over ass for the guy. Truly...He's now officially tied for favorite book boy. Ever. Those are pretty big words for me as my favorite book boy is a long standing relationship. ;)
We know very little about Ford or what he does. We know he plays at TV Producer and we know he is beyond a genius at covert computer hacking. Oh, and we know he keeps pets. Not of the animal persuasion.
But spending an entire day in his life gives us a whole new understanding of who this man is. Though, it still isn't enough. He is still a bit of an enigma, a mystery, a puzzle you want to solve.
He meets his match in this novella, in the most unexpected way and embodiment. He shows us that there is a caring side to him beyond what I would have ever thought possible. There is a need in him and a sense of such tragic loss that my little tar black heart was breaking all over the place.
I was beyond thrilled when JA Huss announced Ford would have a spinoff book and this little prequel novella is just the cherry on top of my little Ford Pet Sunday!

Mr. Rutherford Aston is having a really bad, screwed up day. Worst of all, it’s Christmas Eve. Scrooge that he is, Ford does NOT do holidays or merriment. He does “pets”. Not planning on spreading holiday joy, all he wants is to be entertained by his current submissive “pet” and nurse his broken heart. Total detachment – that’s how he likes to live his life. As it turns out, his plans fall through. From the appearance of troubled friends, to a smart-ass 12-year-old girl, to sitting in church, Ford’s day was quite busy and off schedule.
This novella gives the reader a glimpse into the life and times of a really loveable but crazy dude. Ford is sarcastic, pessimistic and at times sadistic. The conversations, which take place in his head, are hysterical. He’s twisted and I fell in love with him. He is some character.
Got to admit, I have not read the original series. But, it must be said that jumping into this novella cold, I was not lost. The author does a fantastic job of keeping the reader informed of the back-story. It was a fast, funny and enjoyable read. Loved being in the mind of this self-proclaimed “freak”. I look forward his story as well and other characters in the series.

Well for a novella, my oh my what an eye opener this was. I had already fallen head over heals for Ford Aston whilst reading the first three books in the "Rook & Ronin" series, but this little introduction to his story really did cement my feelings for this beautiful, very complex and often misunderstood man.
I loved having the opportunity to rummage around in Ford's head because what I found was so much more than what Ford gave himself credit for. Sure he was socially awkward and yes he did have a particular way about him but boy did he feel (something he always fought so hard to hide). Who knew Ford Aston had a heart?
Onwards to "Taut" because I really cannot wait to see what's in store for Ford. Will he get a HEA? time to go and find out. I rated "Slack" ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm a freak looking for a freak. A freak that can relate to me.I saw a number of sides to Ford whilst reading "Slack." I saw his kinky, dominant side with his pets (fans self). I saw a man who tried his luck at having a "normal" love life but failed. I saw his arrogant asshole side rear it's ugly head (not so nice). I saw jealousy and bitterness and I also saw a man who's heart had been broken. For someone who said he didn't particularly like people, I also saw him form a new bond with a stranger. Yup, this really was one perfect, jam packed little novella that was a fantastic intro to Ford's story. It was engaging and captivating and had me desperate for more from this man.
Onwards to "Taut" because I really cannot wait to see what's in store for Ford. Will he get a HEA? time to go and find out. I rated "Slack" ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a fun little read and into the mind of Ford!! At first I didn't know what to think of Ford when I met him in the Rook and Ronin series. He was an ass and he just didn't do it for me. Then came Panic (which if you haven't read you must) and the epilogue. Oh that epilogue! That's when Ford Aston stole my heart!! So it was great to get in his head. This is one day in his life. Christmas Eve before the NYE party in the epilogue in Panic! We meet his "pets" his mom (which is very touching ) but we meet Sasha!! What a spirited girl who "gets" Ford and we see Fords sweet side. He does have a soft spot and I need more of him! But Sasha? Oh poor Sasha, I hope I see more of you too one day!!

Well it’s been a hot minute but my love affair with Ford has not diminished. It was really nice to revisit this book after so long and love it all over again.

I absolutely adored Ford in Panic. Knowing this was just a quick peak at his side of the story I was really just hoping for more of that dark, gritty & inticing personality. What I actually got was a bit less of the dark & grtty and a bit more of the heartbreak & longing.

Slack gives us a little peek into Ford's world.
He's not into relationships, unless the woman is Rook.
Since he can't have the woman of his dreams, he passes time with "pets".
His pets are always blondes or redheads, never brunettes like Rook, the object of his affections.
This story takes place after the first season of Rook and Spencer's reality show has been filmed, and after Rook's dangerous trip back to Chicago where she went to get the evidence Det. Abelli was after.
There's quite a bit more to this man!
He's definitely an asshole, but he's a charismatic one at that!!
He shows his softer side when it comes to Rook.
I loved his interactions with a little 12 year old girl named Sasha, that he meets at an antique market.
In the short amount of time he spends with her, we see Ford is very much the charmer.
Sasha was definitely a scene stealer.
I'd love to see these two meet up later when Sasha's over the age of consent. :)
Ford has said how he doesn't like people and he tends to push people in his life away, like his mom, and yet he is a true friend and he really values the friendships he has.
He's beyond amazing with Rook.
He was so endearing with Sasha.
He remains loyal to Ronin by not making any advances on Rook, and he even tries to help Spencer with his relationship with Veronica.
He even goes to Christmas Eve mass to make his mom happy.
I hope he gets the Epic love he deserves in "Taut"!!!

Holy shit! What a delicious asshole! In just under 100 pages, I think I am sold on my new book boyfriend! This is exactly how I love my book boyfriends- dark, brooding, complex, and SEXY AS HELL!!!

Slack is the novella prequel to Taut which is Ford's story. In Slack, we get to spend a day with him, in his head, and see the war of emotions and darkness that play out there on a daily basis. He's lonely. He's angry. He has a terrible attitude and is undoubtedly unhappy with everyone and everything.
I am just coming into this series now, at this spinoff and I will say that, although it is said to be a stand-alone, there were a few times that I felt kind of lost. I think I got it all figured out by the end, but you are definitely at an advantage if you have read the whole Rook and Ronin series, which I have not yet. But, Huss's writing is very good and Ford is extremely fuck-HOT!!!!!
It is clear, though, that this novella is pretty much about Ford transitioning from one chapter of his life to the next. He is heart-broken over losing the girl and knows that it is time to move on.
So ready to dive right into Taut next!!!

I love Ford. Period.
I love how committed, faithful to his friends.
This book is short and I recommend that you read the first 3 books in the Manic series before you read Slack. You will have a better understanding of Ford and his friendships.
The book is just a day in the life of Ford on Christmas Eve. Ford may come off as heartless, but he is anything but that.
I thought that there is not much that the author can do in 77 pages with Ford, but I was wrong. In this story we see Ford play with his “pet”, run an “errand” with his friend, meet a 12 year old girl who makes him look at certain things differently, go to his mom’s house and has a heart to heart with Rook.
Side note and my opinion… if Rook was not with Ronin, I would want her with Ford. Actually, my feeling is if Ronin messes up just a little bit with Rook, she should just go to Ford. I love Ronin, but sometimes he made me angry when he put others (yes that whiny drug addict) before Rook.
I did not think I was going to like it as much as I did, but I loved it. I cannot wait to read Taut. I do not think I will be able to get enough of Ford.
I love how the author put in her favorite scenes of Ford in the back of the book. I highly recommend the Manic series. One of my top 5 reads of 2013.

Ford is in the Tragic series as a secondary character, which is where I called dibs on him, for the record. At the time I thought I was in love with Ronin. Then in Panic Ford told Rook “I just don’t care about people. That’s my dirtiest secret and now you have it. I just don’t give a fuck about people, I really don’t.” That’s when I pushed Ronin off the side of my bed & yelled “Me either Ford! I hate people too! Let’s cuddle!”
This novella was a treat, truly. I love male POV stories. I loved being in Ford’s head. I loved being naked on Ford’s pet mat. Bring on TAUT.

5 F*CKING FORD ASTON STARS
Okay, I'll admit that while Ford intrigued me in the Rook & Ronin series, I kept him at arms length. I think it was because I SO wanted Rook with Ronin that I did not want Ford to cloud my thoughts. But after having spent "a day in the life of" Ford Aston...OMG, I am in LOVE.
I know he's weird and he's got issues but Ford is damn HOT and I want to know more about him! I know he's brokenhearted over Rook and I do feel for him. I want him to have his HEA.

The highlight of this book was watching Ford interact with Sasha Alena Cherlin, the young girl from the antique mall. That part was so funny and sweet...I think I fell even more in love with Ford. I really hope Sasha makes an appearance in the next book, because I am dying to see what happened to her.
