With only 40 survivors left in cube 109, the next epic battle is underway. Our groups remain unchanged; the 3 groups from before are ordered to stay together and are given their own team dorm. Shortly thereafter, the rules of this game are explained. Basically, there is a giant board with 49 squares on it. Each day, a team picks a square on that board. Each square contains its own unique monster they will have to face. If they kill it, they take the square. A captain is selected by the game master, and then 2 additional teammates can volunteer. They also get to choose one weapon each. The team with the most squares after 16 days wins!
This volume covers the first 3 days of this challenge. We learn after day 2 that the board is actually a giant Reversi board, which adds a whole new layer of strategy here. This volume also continues to develop the relationships between these characters, and I love to see it. We are then ultimately met with a cliffhanger; Akashi and his teammates encounter their day 3 monster and look to be in trouble. I can only assume they are going to get out of it somehow! Onto volume 5! 5/5
