I borrowed this book thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription, and I read it between my tablet and phone using the Kindle app.

For starters, I must admit that I am more of a follower of astrology as a science that studies the physical forms in the sky rather than as a tool for interpretation and future prediction. Anyhow, I selected this book to give it a go and see where it led.

I found a book written with a great amount of finesse and providing a huge amount of information that is very well-structured and explained. The author's expertise in Chinese and Vietnamese astrology is palpable. If you are looking for light reading, I must warn you that this is not it. I would say it is a dense read, packed with all the information you need to become an expert in Chinese and Vietnamese astrology.

I cannot rate this book less than 5 stars due to the effort and well-structured information provided. I really liked all the explanatory tables and diagrams with arrows, colors, etc., in the book—they are extremely helpful for understanding this highly complex topic.
If you are into this kind of material and have some experience with astrology terminology, you will find this book extremely enriching and worth your time.

Intriguing; well researched and well presented

I borrowed Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology - Zi Wei Dou Shu by Hieu Nguyen Minh from the Kindle Unlimited Library and read it using my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
I found this book to be an intriguing and insightful introduction to a topic new to me: Purple Star Astrology, specifically focusing on Zi Wei Dou Shu. I enjoyed how the author made an ancient and complex subject accessible to average readers like me, especially those new to the topic. I like the step-by-step approach; it helped me feel guided, and I appreciated how the concepts were broken down clearly. I liked that the book provided a practical way to create and analyze horoscopes – different than ones we used to, making the learning process easier.

At times, I felt that the material was a bit challenging, especially when working through some of the charts and graphs – I am sure other readers could have grasped better. However, I was impressed with how the author balanced the mystical aspects of astrology with logical explanations; this was nice to read ands learnm. It helped me connect with this subject on a deeper level. The sections on self-transformation and interpreting behavioral traits were particularly enlightening; more social than mystical.

I picked up this book because Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) is such a fascinating system, but it’s very hard to find accessible resources in English. For that reason alone, I really appreciate what Hieu Nguyen Minh has done here—he’s opened a door for readers like me who are genuinely curious about this tradition. The book does a good job of laying out the basics: stars, palaces, and the overall structure of a chart. It’s clear that the author has a strong grasp of the subject, and I learned things I hadn’t been able to find elsewhere.

At the same time, I have to be honest: the book left me wanting more. A lot of the explanations stop at the surface level. I often found myself thinking, “Okay, but how do I apply this?” There aren’t enough detailed case studies or worked-through chart examples to show how the theory translates into real-life interpretation. Without that, it feels more like an overview than a truly practical guide.

The writing is also a bit dense in places, and the structure could be smoother. Sometimes I felt like I was jumping from one concept to another without a clear step-by-step flow, which made it harder to absorb.

Overall, I’d call this a helpful starting point, but not a complete roadmap. If you’re new to Zi Wei Dou Shu and just want a foothold in the subject, this book has value. But if you’re looking for something you can immediately use to interpret charts with confidence, you’ll probably need to supplement it with other resources.

A tough but worthy read on stars, horoscopes, more

First off, let me say it was really nice of author Hieu Nguyen Minh to offer a free book within this one called “20- Classic Celebrity Horoscopes.” Be sure to download it if you get this one. 

In the foreword, Minh introduces readers on what to expect in “Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology – Zi Wei Dou Shu: Interpreting & Predicting Your Future.” She sets readers’ minds at ease by relating this book is different from others on the subject because of its “simplicity and clarity.” I didn’t find that to be the case at all!

If you don’t know what “Wei Dou Shu” is, or its origin, don’t worry – the author explains the elements early on (mountain, medicine, live, divination, etc.).

This is a super-detailed book with lots of charts and graphs. One at the start looks simple on the surface but is hard to decipher in the center unless you really concentrate. It has elements of the born date, lunar calendar, wu tiger, etc. 

I liked most the parts on self-transformation and centripetal self-transformation and birth charts, learning about how to interpret personality and behavioral traits. This is not an easy book, but I’d say stick with it if you can. Other fascinating parts include the elements of numerous stars and even the moon and how they all interact in space.

The author is super-passionate about this topic and did a great job putting it all together.

I approached Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology with curiosity, though I’ll admit upfront that I am not the target audience. Astrology has never been an area I’ve explored in depth, so much of the technical detail and specialised terminology felt dense for me as a casual reader. That being said, it’s clear that Hieu Nguyen Minh has put a tremendous amount of work into creating a comprehensive introduction to Zi Wei Dou Shu, or Purple Star Astrology.

The book stands out for its depth and structure. It doesn’t just skim the surface; it walks readers through the history, principles, and practical applications of this lesser-known branch of Chinese astrology. For someone already interested in the subject, I can imagine this being an invaluable resource. The diagrams, explanations, and step-by-step breakdowns all suggest that the author genuinely wants readers to be able to apply the system themselves, rather than just passively learn about it.

For me, however, the material was difficult to engage with. I often felt like I was wading through information that was written with a much more specialised audience in mind. While I appreciated the clarity of the author’s tone, the book requires a level of dedication and prior interest that I don’t personally have.

As such, my rating is 3/5. It’s not a reflection of the quality of the book — which is thorough and clearly written — but more of a mismatch between the content and my own interests.

Not for newbies; extremely thorough! This book was extremely well-written, packed with information, and had a lot of structure and explanation. It's clear that the author knows a lot about Chinese and Vietnamese astrology. I have to tell you that this is not the light reading you're looking for. It is, in my opinion, a comprehensive read that contains all the knowledge required to master Chinese and Vietnamese astrology. The author deserves a lot of credit for revising the words and star names. This book's most costly aspect is that it deals with future prediction using a very logical method.

The effort and thorough organization really show in the context of this book. I thought all of the book's explanation tables and graphics with arrows, colors, etc. were great; they really assist readers grasp this very complicated subject.

In addition to using sophisticated methods to forecast the future, you will learn how to make and read a horoscope. The book walks you through every step so you can truly grasp how it all works, rather than just giving you facts. This book makes a lot of sense if you've had trouble following other astrological texts. I personally recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Purple Star Astrology; it's an excellent book but may be a tough read for newbies!

This book was highly informative! Being someone who is new to astrology in general, it was a lot to take in all at once! I had to read slowly, look at the chart that I got for myself to understand what specific things the author was talking about, and relate a lot of it to western astrology. The author noted that there were many differences between purple star astrology and Western astrology. However, having no point of reference other than the latter, I noticed several parallels between Western astrology and Chinese and Vietnamese astrology, such as the yin and yang still being the same masculine and feminine energies. However, it seems, at least to myself as a beginner in these things, that this method, the Purple Star method, incorporates a lot more information than western astrology, such as concepts that go hand in hand with tarot and other divination methods. To be truthful, I didn’t completely grasp the concepts in the book, but I feel this is due to my being a complete newbie. The book was written well, and everything was broken down to try to make it easier to grasp. Overall, I would say this is a great book for someone who already has a basic understanding of astrology, or who is a math nerd!

‘Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology - Zi Wei Dou Shu: Interpreting & Predicting your future’ by Hieu Nguyen Minh is an exceptional work on astrology, philosophy, and divination. If you’re into Chinese or Vietnamese astrology then this is an excellent place to start your journey into enigmatic subject. It’s beginner friendly, but it can help to have some technical acumen or knowledge about these things to get the most out of it and follow the illustrations. I particularly found it interesting to observe the interactions between various ideas, constructs, and symbols (such as the early branches or 12 animal designations and their harmony triads, and the interactive transformation and self-transformation insights). The charts and diagrams are informative and well-crafted. Certain variables are occasionally used to give a formula or general idea of how interactions of certain structures can occur. Overall, it’s an excellent primer and window into a vast topic. As a bonus, some celebrity horoscopes are given to present a kind of idea of this process. The work is an expert and approachable guide into the esoteric and rich world of oriental astrology and philosophy.

This book takes a deep dive into the background and practice of Zi Wei Duo Shu. The author takes care to make everything described easy to follow for an english speaking audience without excluding terms and representation of the original language.

I found this book to be very interesting and easy to understand. The author starts with introducing the idea of Zi Wei Duo Shu and the different styles you may encounter before continuing into the foundational terms and ideas of this astrology. The use of charts and other visual elements greatly help with understanding the practice and following along step-by-step.

There is a wealth of detail in this book that is presented in a very thoughtful and organized manner. Even if you do not have any background on the subject whatsoever, you can confidently follow along to a point where you can practice Zi Wei Duo Shu yourself. If you are interested in learning about the practice of Chinese and Vietnamese astrology, this is an excellent book to get!

Whether you choose to believe it is possible to predict the future or not, it is always interesting to find out about ways of divination that other cultures have embraced. Astrology Wisdom Unlocked: Master Your Star Signs and Birth Chart - Volume 1, authored by Hieu Nguyen Minh, is an easy introduction to Purple Star Astrology (Zi Wei Dou Shu). This divination system, particularly popular in Vietnam, is quite different from what Western cultures embrace. The author explains the significance of the Emperor and Treasury Stars and gives in-depth explanations of the meanings assigned to the six significant stars in the Emperor constellation. It is not something to be taken lightly, and some concentration is required, but the author has been at pains to simplify a relatively complex system as much as possible. The compilation of relevant stars to refer to if you are confused or need clarification. This book will suit anyone serious about discovering more about this ancient divination system.

Based on Vietnamese and Chinese astrology, the reader is introduced to the concepts of Zi Wei Dou Shu - the five Arts which represent the principles of balance and the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The practice encourages a holistic understanding of the universe’s spiritual dynamics. If you are used to reading western astrology charts (or even just the astrology column in the local newspaper) you may find the information about functional palaces and aggressive stars and charts difficult to follow at first. Zi Wei Dou Shu uses a lunar calendar and star-field, while western astrology adopts a solar calendar and natal chart, to unlock life’s mysteries. I found the depth of explanation of the intricacies of the art heavy going, because I could not relate them back to my own chart, but if you are prepared to put in the time it would be an interesting exercise. It really is a masterclass in understanding and utilising the purple star astrology.

Detailed overview of purple star astrology

I was really intrigued to dive into this book and learn more about Zi Wei Dou Shu, especially with its focus on balance and the five elements. It’s clear the author has put a lot of effort into explaining this practice, and there’s definitely a wealth of information to explore.

That said, I found it difficult to stay engaged. The formatting was frustrating at times, especially the repeated wording in bullet points, which made the content feel overly long and dragged out unnecessarily. It felt like the book was overwritten in parts, and simplifying the explanations would have made it a much smoother read.

The models used were particularly complex, and I struggled to relate them back to my own experiences. This made it harder to connect with the material in a practical way. Overall, it’s a good effort, but I think it would need more work to make it accessible to a wider audience.

This book offers a deep and comprehensive look into Purple Star Astrology, one of the more intricate branches of Chinese metaphysics.

I appreciated the introduction, particularly the explanation of the Five Arts - mountain, medicine, life, divination, and physiognomy - which provided valuable context and grounding for the content that followed. However, I found the book quite complex overall. It would have been helpful if there was a clearer, step-by-step guide at the beginning on how to calculate your own chart, as much of the information later in the book becomes difficult to apply without that foundation. I managed to work out my hour pillar (I think), but beyond that, I struggled to follow the system. That said, the depth and quality of the content are undeniable.

Overall, this book is likely best suited for those who already have some background in the subject. A solid 4 stars - I wanted to love it more but found it hard to follow.

I needed a more basic version

I picked up this book because I don't always resonate with Western astrology and was hoping that Purple Star Astrology would offer a fresh perspective to help me connect with my future. The description made it seem like it would be easy to dive into, but unfortunately, I struggled to understand and create my astrology chart, which made the rest of the book difficult to interpret and relate to. I found myself needing a more basic version with a clearer breakdown of the concepts.

The language and explanations felt similar to other astrology books I've read—vague and general, making it challenging to apply the information to my life.

On the positive side, the book does provide interesting insights into the differences between Western and Eastern astrology, which piqued my curiosity about Purple Star Astrology and left me wanting to learn more about how it all works. It really highlighted the strengths of Purple Star Astrology. The book also used many breakdowns of charts which was great to see. The diagrams were very helpful to get a clearer idea of what was going on.

Honestly, Astrology has always been a bit of a weird subject for me, but I’ve always been interested in learning more, so I decided to pick up this book. Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology - Zi Wei Dou Shu: Interpreting & Predicting your future does provide a lot of information on the subject, and does it in kind of an eastern way, if that makes sense. And while it doesn’t dive too deep into any one subject, it does cover a broad scope that will satisfy a person just getting into the subject of astrology (kind of like me), although as I said earlier, it’s very eastern in how it talks about the subjects, so I felt kind of like I was reading a wuxia when I was reading this book. Not bad, just different. If you want to get into this subject, I definitely recommend it, just know what you’re getting into first before you do.

I can’t say I knew anything about astrology before reading this book, let alone anything about Vietnamese or Chinese astrology. I found this book to be very accessible, informative, and well laid out from the very start. There are a lot of visual aids to this book, which really helped reinforce what was on the pages, and it put a lot into context and order.

The complexity of the subject is staggering but rewarding, and having read this book it is clear there is a lot more for the reader to uncover. There is a lot of detail about how astrology relates to the person and a sort of cryptic element to uncover. But it is also reflective, teaching us how to grow as a person and a society, and the messages within are important to remember.

This book won’t suit all, but to those with a interest in the topic or are simply intrigued by astrology will find it very rewarding.

"Unlocking the Secrets of Purple Star Astrology" by Hieu Nguyen Minh is a treasure trove of astrological insights and ancient wisdom. This book can be a challenge to read and understand, but I think the puzzle is part of the fun. I really enjoyed the section "Images and meanings of 18 stars." I saw a lot of myself in the "Glooming Star" as well as the "ruinous star." I also really enjoyed the section on "The Four Precious Gems of Transcendent Purple Star Astrology." My wife and I got a good laugh comparing ourselves to the "Spousal Palace with Primal Prosperity." This star configuration means "you have deep affinity with your spouse, who empathizes and understands you. You have good fortune with the opposite sex." The author did their best to convey a complex and culturally significant part of Vietnamese culture to English-language readers. I for one, am grateful for the effort!

This book provides a great introduction to East Asian astrology and was very obviously not written by an a.i. The book does not make many comparisons to Western astrology though there are clear paralllels. For example, the moon functions in both as symbolizing/influencing the same events. East Asian astrology like Western has 12 signs, but five elements not four. One's hour of birth matters thus apparently one can be a fire snake born in a goat hour. i am still learning east asian astrology and this book is very useful for that! E. Asian astrology looks at numerous "stars" but these are more like the Arabic points that Western astrologers use. Why study it? For psychological insights and also as a memory aid.
