3/3.5*s review posted here... http://bookpassionforlife.blogspot.co... The Awakening tells us the story of Lauren, a young woman just about to meet someone very special and fall in love. Gavin, the boy she will meet is everything she thought she wanted in a man but when they get close, strange things begin to happen…..migraines, strange voices & the dreams all tell her one thing – beware! What is happening to her, why is this happening to her? Is she going crazy? One thing is certain, it all centres around Gavin and when the pieces click into place, Gavin is revealed to be a vampire…..but the discoveries don’t end there for there is more and it involves Lauren herself. However, just as Lauren is coming to terms with what is happening in her life another man arrives on the scene – Daniel, Gavin’s cousin – and the warnings begin anew…. But what does it mean this time? Can she cope with any more surprises? And with the electricity & excitement she feels around him, how will Daniel impact her deepening relationship with Gavin?
So, I enjoyed this story…. I thought all of the characters were likable particularly our main character Lauren, she’s just a young woman wanting to have fun, have a laugh with her friends & find love, as we all do at that age and then Gavin enters her life and rocks it in more ways than one. I liked their relationship, they made a sweet couple but I did wish for more time together and more depth to them because for all I liked them, I didn’t ‘connect’ with them emotionally, yet I connected slightly with the stolen moments she had with another. I thought Lauren was very realistic in her reactions to some of the discoveries, she struggled & didn’t want to believe what was happening but was willing to ‘see where things would lead’ and I appreciated that about her character. As I said, I enjoyed the story – I always like the vampire genre and I especially liked the authors take on vampires and how they have evolved, it was nice getting some of the history too as Lauren starts delving into it in an attempt to accept what is happening to her and I like how her history entwines with it. I love how Lauren is forewarned about people/situations that may bring her harm, the way in which it was done gave the book a spooky feel and amped up the curiosity factor. I also liked reading about Lauren’s ‘education’ (I can’t really say much in case its spoilery) but that also adds to her character. I was very interested in the overall storyline and it steadily got better & better throughout and culminated in a really surprising, but good ending that does leave you wanting a sequel. So to sum it up, The Awakening was a good story based on a romance between two people with unsuspecting secrets between them, a nice dose of the supernatural and it held my interest but it was very much a getting to know you and your world book, hopefully in a sequel we can get some enemies or the mentioned vampire council will make and appearance & become a problem? Who knows but I liked where it went and definitely left it up in the air for a sequel.
I found The Awakening by Emma Jones alright. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't AMAZING either. I don't know, I just felt like the book didn't contain enough material in it. It was missing something and I felt like the writing style was too explicit, like there wasn't anything to be revealed later on in the future.
Though I have to say, I think the cover is pretty nice. Simple, but beautiful. And very mysterious looking.
The plot is a bit like the Twilight Saga, though it is a bit different because Lauren, the main character is not a boring little girl who just falls in love with a vampire. I actually felt that the relationship between Gavin and Lauren is very bland. Even though the book was about romance, I didn't exactly feel like it was that romantic because the relationship didn't contain enough about the relationships and moments (if you know what I mean). The characters also didn't really speak to me. They all seemed very bland to me, other than Daniel somehow. I felt like Lauren should have spoken to us a bit more about her thoughts, her experiences, and her feelings. Anyways, I think the plot wasn't the most original, but I liked the twist in with the witches.
The writing style definitely could have improved. Some of the sentences were a bit awkward, since they became a bit too long and there were a too less commas and periods. I would recommend separating everything into more paragraphs, since it seemed really blocky, and it was really a mouthful to read.
I also found the pacing a bit too rushed, but the pacing was definitely better than books who let you read 200 pages of the main character grieving over someone else (a book that I just recently finished, called Teardrops by Lauren Kate that I do not recommend you to read, unless you are a VERY patient person).
Overall, I think the book was an okay read, though it could have been better. What made me like this book was the ending. It really caught me off edge and now I'm always wondering what happened next. I hope there is a sequel to the book!
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Firstly I would like to thank Emma for providing me with a copy of this book. I have had a love for vampires for as long as I can remember so I was excited to read Emma's take on the ever popular mythical creatures.
I found the first few chapters of this book a little slow going but I am very glad I stuck in there for the whole story. It was very intriguing. Emma's take on vampires is a little different to the blood sucking monsters you may have seen or read about in other books, shows and films. It was refreshing to have a different view.
I really liked Lauren. She was an easy character to relate to. I could feel her emotions streaming off the page. I could feel her fear, her happiness and the way she was torn over what to do for the best.
Gavin was a great character. At first he seemed like a normal guy, but the more we got to know him the more we realised he isn't. I really felt for him at times in this book. He's clearly a good guy but I can see why Lauren reacted the way she did.
Without giving too much away, I found David's story to be very interesting. I would love to have a story dedicated to him and how he came to exist.
From the off I had this feeling that Daniel would be trouble. He had this bad boy vibe about him that just immediately put me on edge. I don't think that he is a nasty person I think that he has an edge of trouble.
Overall I thought this was a good story but there were quite a few grammatical errors and typos. This made the story more difficult to become absorbed in and little longer to read.
The ending of this book completely threw me. It was not what I was expecting and I can't wait to read the second book.
The cover for The Awakening is stunning and that drew me into this book instantly. It’s an intriguing and captivating cover and the book itself perfectly matches this. The Awakening was engaging and really enjoyable – a good debut novel.
Lauren was a really likeable character – as she was easy to relate to as a typical girl from the beginning, once her life began to change, I found it easy to connect with her and empathise too. As for Gavin and Daniel, I never knew what to expect from either of them and this made the book interesting for me. Daniel I thought especially was developed really well – when he was introduced, I had expected him to be a one-dimensional trouble-causer but that wasn’t the case!
My complaint from this book was not with the actual story but more the formatting of it. Parts of this book, especially when we learn about the history of vampires and the legends, were quite lengthy and as interesting as they were, I would have found them easier to read if they’d been split into smaller paragraphs. There were also quite a few grammatical mistakes which I don’t normally notice but were quite prominent in The Awakening.
Focusing on the actual story though, I found this book a little spooky and very gripping. It was a very fast-paced read which kept it entertaining and I was always eager to know what was going to happen next. I loved how Emma built up the traits and history and the unpredictable twists towards the end were great. The Awakening was a fascinating debut novel and I will be looking out for more from the author.
I LOVED reading this book. First of all though, have to say, the cover for this book is one of my absolute favorites. The heart is so pretty and creative because of the vines in the middle. The vines, of course, hold three important names. If you didn't read the synopsis (go back and read it since it's right here for you)... anyways, you know that Lauren is going to have a choice to make. I loved the layout of this book and the storyline. At the beginning, I kept asking myself, " What is going on?" But, not in a bad way, I just had to know what was going on with Lauren and What was Gavin? I loved the fact that the story kept rolling. The concept of time was fast so that a month would go by really quick, which I was happy with because I wanted to figure out what was going on. I love Lauren and Gavin, however, we know that something or someone could effect relationships... hints: Daniel. This guys likes to stir things up and make things confusing for Lauren. How will he affect Lauren and Gavin? How will he affect the whole story? Well, as usual, I'm not going to give it away. You'll have to read it.
I really love fantasy stories and I really enjoyed this story a lot!
It was very fast paced but not too fast that it made the story confusing. It was just right.
I love the characters because they felt really real to me, how they talked and act and they just felt real to me and that's what I really enjoyed about the story. They reacted in ways I would have reacted and that was great to read.
Emma has a really great style of writing and it made the story even more enjoyable. I love the fantasy factor and how it was to do with different fantasy characters, was very different from other stories I've read and it was just a really great story!
this is a vampire story, it is different. I liked it but I didn't love it. It was really predictable and just out there. It does have a cute story and a good background to it. It just wasn't my favorite and just didn't grab me. If you like vampires, witches and magic and that kind of thing, you might like this book.
