My name is Lexie and I raise the dead. But Necromancy isn't all I can do. But that's for another time.
It's my first week at the university and an accident has sent our world spinning. A decision that should be years in the making now has to be made in mere days. And the repercussions are big. And not just for my life but for the guys' as well. Everyone will feel my choice. Everyone will have to live with it. What the hell do I do?
B.L.Brunnemer has been a devoted reader since she was young. As a child, she was instantly attracted to horror stories. The plot, the suspense, the action. She loved it all. Which, as she grew, branched out into several other genres. But a strong female character always caught her eye. Through the years romance became a big part of her reading. Then she found the Young Adult/New Adult genre. But she had a problem. She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. At least in the paranormal romance section.
So, she decided to fix that. She'd been writing for years already and had always struggled to finish a manuscript. Until, she decided to write what she wanted to read.
B.L. Brunnemer doesn't have any other publications at this time. She's just a woman, who loves a good story with great characters. And she hopes you'll love them too.
This book needs a more detailed review but I hope we will make it a br in the future with the #cakeeaters.
I was anxious about reading this book, because the last book of TVD felt really rushed. I'm happy that the break was actually good for the author and her writing style. Reading Hunger Pains felt like the author returned to her root. Reading this was like the author found the joy of telling a story again.
I enjoyed the story, because I met some of my all time favorite RH characters like (ZEKE). I loved they have come a long way. Sadly some beloved characters were left behind. I still miss Hardes. Still wonder if Lexi will ever forgive Hardes. She loved him so much and then dropped him so quickly after he saved her life. I will miss Marie and Zeke's aunt Sylvie. I hope they will come to visit.
But all that doesn't say to much about the book. Darkest Whisper is about their College year(s). The all move to Seattle but attend different Colleges. They experience to live in the dorms. Only Miles has a house. The genius thing about this book is that we finally see their individual relationships and the struggles (internal, relationship struggle and so on). And it's like a standalone. We know the series will go on but the plot could have ended with this book. No cliffhanger there. I loved it. I really hope BL will take her time to write her next book so she won't write books that feels like she is burned out like the last two or three books of TVD. I'm looking forward to the next book of the series, even if I have to wait another year.
I know I don't research books well enough, but I actually read the summary for this one BEFORE picking it up and NOWHERE did it say it's a spin-off with the SAME main characters 😤
B.L., you are a genius. This might turn out to be a love letter to you for creating one of my top favorite series. There aren’t many books I would reread, but yours i could read over and over again.
Lexi and the guys are back! I dropped everything I was doing just to reunite with my favorites. I loved that every guy had their moment with our girl. Also, i wanted to scream of happiness with what happened with Asher, Miles, and Zeke. They all made a big choice in each of their relationships, and I love how they handled the obstacles thrown at them. Their communication keeps getting better and better. I hope to see more of Ethan and Issac with a Lexi in between *wink, wink* hehehe. Also, B.L. thanks for the warning about proceeding forward with the cliffhanger. I love to torture myself, so I did indeed continue.
So Excited For Lexie and her guys to begin a new journey!
I adore B.L. Brunnemer, and purchased every single book in the veil diaries series. Even though I preferred the earlier books in the Veil Diaries Series to the later ones, they were all still great! So imagine my excitement when I saw that the Darkest Whispers Series (featuring Lexie and her guys in college) was finally out!!!
I love Lexie, and I really like all of her guys - a few more than others - but I see how each one provides something that she needs in her life.
**SPOILERS**
The book begins with Lexie and her guys headed to Seattle for college. Asher and Zeke are attending a different college from the rest of the group, and they’re all a little worried about how that’s going to effect their “dating dynamic,” etc.
Lexie’s really excited to be in Seattle and going to College, she really feels as if she can put the past behind her and start this new chapter in her and her guys lives, happily. Unfortunately, NOTHING is ever that simple when it comes to Lexie, and it appears that she’ll never have any true peace while she is the most powerful necromancer around, WITH added magical abilities that no other necromancer has.
Trouble starts pretty immediately. Lexie needs to meet the Coven leader of Seattle and Asher WITH Lexie need to meet his Pack’s Alpha pair. The Coven Leader assigns a truly awful witch to teach Lexie, and when Lexie and Asher meet the Alpha pair they’re stunned by what they have to say. Suddenly issues that Lexie HAD NEVER imagined she’d have to think about at eighteen come to the forefront and she’s forced to make life altering decisions that not only affect her, but all of her amazing guys.
“Hunger Pains,” is actually around 95% Lexie and Asher’s “story.” The plot relies heavily on the fact that Lexie and Asher hadn’t thought that their relationship would have to change once he joined the Seattle pack - how wrong they were. Unsettling revelations come to light, and could threaten their love and their relationship. However, we’ve gotten to know Lexie SOOO WELL throughout these books and it’s clear that no matter how difficult the situation or issue may be, she will always go straight headfirst in 100%, especially if it has something to do with the guys she loves.
The book was written well, and Brunnemer always delivers a great story! I thought the book “lagged” in some places. And also added some (unnecessary, if not perhaps too much) drama with souls leaving bodies, horrible witches, jealous werewolf girls, and templars trying to recruit Lexie, considering the book spent so much time on Lexie and Asher, there was barely anytime to resolve all these other issues…so some of them are never tied up. And the ones that are, are too quickly resolved/tied up at THE VERY END OF THE BOOK - as if Brunnemer ran out of time, or just wanted to finish the book quickly. I wasn’t crazy about the ending of Hunger Pains - even knowing it’s the start of another, probably long series following Lexie and her guys. I finished feeling sort of dissatisfied. And that’s not a feeling I’m used to after reading one of Brunnemer’s books. This is the reason I gave this book 4, and not 5 stars. I probably would’ve given it 3, if not for the fact that I absolutely am in love with Lexie and her harem! Despite the few issues I had with this first book in Lexie’s new series, I’ll definitely be waiting with baited breath for the next installment!!
I wanted to rate it a 1 just because I was pissed at it but. I won’t .
Honestly I do not like Lexie and the guys in a polyandry relationship. It almost feels like the author doesn’t even know she’s writing a why choose or this is just a bump in the road for the characters I don’t we’ll see.
Their “ rules” honestly is going to be the death of them - they don’t even feel like a little family anymore. ALSO, keeping every relationship completely private is also going to be the death of them. THEY SAY THEY ARE COMMUNICATING BUT NOBODY IS.
I’m just sad because I read 9 books of slow burn just to be completely let down by their relationship.
I’d wish they were all just friends, maybe with Lexie dating Zeke bc ( Zeke>) EVEN THOUGH Zeke is one of the reason I think the polyandry relationship isn’t working.
I have so many thoughts
I’m gonna go reread the veil series now.

amazing story! Lexie and the guys are back. I love seeing how theyve changed and how they face adversity as a family. So great to see that all of their relationships have progressed and are where we want them to be! Can’t wait for me!
I am so glad that I enjoyed this. I really struggled with the last two Veil Diaries books so it was such a relief that this series is starting off strong. I’m still wary overall, the author hasn’t completely earned my trust back but this release helps move it in the right direction for sure.
It was great to see their relationships mature and get more sexually and emotionally developed. They’re in a really solid place when this book ends, freaking finally. I’m going to be honest that I’m getting sick of Zekes shit though.
I liked the plot and the way it’s developing. There was a lot packed into this installment and I would have liked for it to have been a little more calm and less “end of the world” again. Lexie especially is still struggling with the events from Veil Diaries so I would have liked to have seen her a bit more settled before the near death experiences started up. I absolutely loved her helping the ghost in her dorm move on and that reconnection to the more simple aspect of her powers. I wanted way more ghosts in this book and would have loved to have seen more of that.
That’s not to say I didn’t like what we did get, I totally did, and I am excited to see how everything with the Templars plays out especially.
Great start for the second Arc of Beyond the Veil. So very well worth the wait. This was just great from start to finish. And the waiting for sweet love time has finally come. You get just about everything in this book. I can't believe its back to the waiting for the next installment. I was so enraptured I couldn't even make it last more than a day.
I haven’t read a book for a long time. So I was excited when I checked that this came out!
Overall I really liked it! It was nice seeing Lexi and the guys in college. And seeing how she is in a relationship with all and working on that. The start of it was fast pace which I liked. But the end felt a bit rushed though and would have liked a full chapter of the aftermath of what happen instead of just telling. There were a number of spicy scenes…. But I like that it wasn’t a big portion of the book!( for me that’s annoying)
I just wished I checked back on the series when most of it was completed lol( cause I forgot about it for a while since the author had a kid and wasn’t releasing anything fast)
I felt like we got back to the good stuff just in a new setting. I still cannot believe that Miles has all that money and all he does with it is spoil Lexi but like not even that much??
So I did not realize this was a continuation of The Veil Diaries series ( I think I'm on book 5??) which I have not finished yet!! So while I was not completely lost there were things I didn't know anything about. That said I still enjoyed the book and will continue to read! But Authors please put a note in your blurb stating "You need to read XYZ before you read this story"!
OMG OMG OMG BL has done it again! I discovered Lexi and her boys from book one and patiently awaited each new book. It was my very first Reverse Harem. I love how different BLs take on a Poly relationship then most of the RH I read. This next chapter of Lexi and the boys lives is off to a great start.
Lexi and the guys all finally make it to college. They are all in the same town, but different schools and don't live together. They have all matured a lot and the communication between them all has grown so much and it was so refreshing to see. Once again, the witches are bitches and so many people turn on her when she was just trying to live her life. I really like how it wasn't a cliffhanger yet there is so much story to go. They still continue to grow and mature as the story continues on. Their family meetings are so mature and really shows the growth that BL allowed them to have instead of staying with the past books and issues. We are able to really enjoy their progression of both their relationships and them as people.
I will always be Team Zeke for life and love that he finally got his special time with Lexi and that together they were able to work through their funk of past traumas. Miles got a bad rep that I don't think he deserved in the last couple books and was glad he was able to redeem himself, and the first to pop the questions!! All the feels of that moment. The twins seem to kind of take a backseat in this book and the focus was more on the relationship with Zeke and Asher. Which I'm totally fine with as they had most of book 4 & 5. Their relationship with Lexi was really built up and strong from those books on. Asher, ugh he will always be my Paul Walker golden boy. He took a lot of heat in this book because he wasn't wanting to embrace his wolf as being him and not a separate entity, which caused the issues we see. Glad though he was able to work through it and be more accepting of himself as the book went on. I feel we all have a wolf in us at some point in our lives that takes us time to accept.
Of course we have a couple bitch character, we always need those to throw our anger out. I feel Reagan just needs a good "take it outside" moment with Lexi and she will straighten right up. The badass Lexi that came out on the roof is all she needs for a couple minutes.
I'm already excited for the next book in this series to continue on with Lexi and the Guys.
Oh and Maria being so ugly towards Lexi really hurts my heart for her and not something I would of seen coming.

While this is first in a series, it really can’t be your jumping off point in this world. There’s too much missing for anyone to just be able to pick this up, especially as the series follows the same characters in a continuing story arc. This is likely an unpopular opinion, but I wish this book spent less time focusing on Lexie and the guys’ relationships, and more on the actual real world and problems going on here. It was a good third of the book before any plot happened, and the drama with each guys followed by individual conversation, followed by group conversation just got so repetitive. Even her thoughts were circular and just kept rehashing the same thing over and over. I don’t really care about the logistics of a poly relationship, I just wants Lexie to have moral support and kick some butt of bad guys. It really wasn’t much different from the ‘younger’ audience series, except she has sex in her with her guys, sometimes against better judgement. If she’s held out for ten books, surely another day would have been possible. It seems like there was a rush to have her getting all the guys naked and inside her, which didn’t fit with the character that we’ve been following for ten books already. I mean, it’s great it finally happened so we can get that over with, but it didn’t seem true to form. Mostly though, this book didn’t develop a plot until way too many pages in, and then those last sixty pages it tries to make something and squeezes it in so quick you can miss it if you’re busy sneezing. It’s not developed and instantly resolved, whereas it seems like the sort of thing that should have been the focus of the story. There are so many little things introduced that it just didn’t have time to truly develop them yet. Then there were wasted pages with alt POVs that really didn’t need to be there. Take Zeke for example and his inability to sleep. The single scene where Lexie comes over, assess what’s going on and realises the extent of the situation would have been enough. It wasn’t required to tell us a half dozen times through his POV in the lead up. It was just really repetitive all round. I did fly through this though, so it held my interest despite everything else, which is more than I can say for a lot of other book I’ve tried recently so I’m rounding up.
University. Goodbye, Spring Mountain, Montana; Hello, Seattle, Washington. New beginnings. However, Lexie's fresh start soon becomes more of a continuation. Prejudices, veiled threats, and of course, attempts on her life. College isn't starting out as expected or hoped for. Then there are the guys and their wishes/desires/dreams/demands. No more hiding; the future is now.
Good. Not great. It was wonderful to be reunited with Lexie, Zeke, Miles, Isaac, Ethan, and Asher. They are truly some of my favorite characters ever. However, this story was missing the magic of the first books. Honestly, the strength of the book is the characters. Their relationships with each other, the little special moments, and the beauty of the ordinary ones made the series magical. It was at its best as the guys orbited around Lexie. It loses a bit of its shine when it concentrates on the paranormal world. I wish the full paranormal world had remained on the periphery in The Books of Stone but it's too late for that. It's just that we have lost Asher's character to his wolf. Gone is the sweet chef. His storyline has unbalanced the entire dynamic. The other guys were almost an afterthought Ethan wasn't even that. Where was he? One scene and he was missing when needed. Zeke has regressed and Miles was missing his charm in favor of his wallet. He needed a redemption arc after his relationship failures in the last book but apparently supplying top-end bath products is enough. I'm disappointed and worried. I can see this becoming just another paranormal RH and losing its uniqueness if the characters aren't the focus. I'm sure BL has enough loyal readers who will continue to rave about whatever she writes but I would challenge them to go back to the beginning. Book One of the Veil is so special. I had hoped this Book One would be equally outstanding. It's hard to recapture magic but I know the writer who came up with these characters can.
Man I have missed these characters and I have waited such a long time to start the next part of their journey.
If you haven’t already this continues Lexis journey from the veil diaries, this is the next part of their lives figuring out college and starting over in Seattle after the events went down in the previous series.
Zeke!!! He has always been my favourite character and I absolutely loved seeing him again. I was definitely not expecting his and lexis relationship to progress that fast. With the trauma and everything I expected at least in book 2 or 3 of them getting to where they did in this book but I still enjoyed every second. Miles, he is once again the miles we all love and I just wish we saw more of him but what we did I enjoyed. I realised this book was basically settling relationships that wasn’t already settled from veil diaries so I’m grateful we got that but again I wasn’t expecting zeke and Asher to be that quick either. I hope now that the relationships are solid we will see them all equally doing forward especially the twins, they were missing a lot during this one but I got it.
I love the mystery throughout, I also enjoyed getting to meet new characters and establish sides with some while others are still a bit unsure of. I also liked that we are seeing more of a variety in supernaturals as well as locations. I was curious at first as to why Seattle and I hope we get an answer further in the series. I also liked the tie backs to the veil diaries with lexis true self etc coming back into the series and that we are starting to see her evolve into that even just slightly for now. I’m hoping we see the gargoyles in this series also, I’d love for a cameo at some point. There’s still so much to say about this but I loved every second and I can’t wait to unravel more on the mystery and see where the series goes
So well written. Firstly, I am so happy to be back into this world, had missed Lexie and her guys. This book was more focused on Zeke, Asher and Miles. The twins were more in the supporting roles in this one. I missed the fun they used to bring in the group dynamics. Although, I love that they were the most accepting of the poly relationship.
We got to meet some new characters, both good and bad. The golem and gnome were my favorite. I wish Zeke, Miles and Isaac would turn into some kind of supernatural as well (without the trauma, obviously 😅) It's just that right now they have to stay back from the fight scenes and they hate it.
I finished the book within hours, no matter how slow I wanted to read. It's just so good! I will be waiting patiently for the next one.
Excellent kick off to the next phase of Lexie and the guys story. After the devastation that was book 9 of veil diaries, this picks up only months after the ending of book 9 and the team are on their way to college. But there are so many obstacles and not fun ones that it's a little heartbreaking. Meeting a gnome and a golem was fun though. Also in case you're worried Lexie and the boys are all mostly on the same page now in their relationships 😜. I had fun reading this book and I'm excited for this new series.
This book was everything I needed after the ending of the first series. It has all the magic of character connection, emotion, and action that made me fall in love with the first series! It’s well written and leaves you utterly satisfied with the story, while still intrigued about what is to come. I love to see them work out their relationships, but in a realistic way. Oh boy did this book ever bring the steam too! It was absolutely stellar! I cannot wait for more!
BL never ceases to amaze me. I will admit, I was an utter wreck when I finally heard this book was almost done. It meant I had to take a leap and hope that Lexie's world wasn't too different than in the original series. It is. Slightly. And that different is epic. Lexie and her family have grown tremendously. They've made leaps and bounds. It seems she has more support now by outsiders than before, while limited. I have hope for Lexie's future with her family and can't wait to see how it all unfolds!!! Thank you for another great adventure!
This book is so good I love every single bet of it. The steamy 🔥🔥is really good and not overly the top, jealousy is getting better it’s calm down, laugh out loud moments, sweet, surprises 😉, action and a lot more. I can say this B.L. Brunnemer keeping coming. I can’t wait until the next book hope we don’t have to wait long 😁. It makes want to read the whole series again or read this book again. The love all the guys but I love miles and zeke the best then Asher, Ethan and Isaac but I can never pick a favorite 😍
This book takes the YA relationship of Lexie and her guys (from The Veil Diaries) into an RH one with hot-as-hell scenes. They are still struggling with what it means to be in a 6-person romantic relationship but are getting better about their communication with each other and within the group. I will admit I wasn't very happy with Asher, but he eventually redeemed himself. I can't wait to see where this series takes us!
I have patiently waited for this book for what feels like a long time. But patience is a virtue and is so rewarding!!! I absolutely loved how Alexis and the guys relationships have progressed. Most of all, I love Lexies growth through the books. Her bad assness has only heightened! I am so here for it all!!! Another Slam dunk. Touchdown. Out of the ball park book from BL😍
This series is a sequel series to the Veil Diaries series that captured many readers hearts and souls. This has been a great reintroduction to the characters and the new challenges they will face as college age adults. As the characters are older we do get some steamy scenes but it’s not a majority we get just as much plot, detail, and world building as we have come accustomed to from B.L. Brunnemer.
B.L Brunnemer did an amazing job, transitioning her first set of YA books into adult books. She created new avenues while staying true to the story line. I love how she keeps it real with every day conflicts and resolutions while throwing in a little supernatural to spice up everything. I highly recommend this book but I strongly recommend starting from the very beginning so that you can enjoy the full richness of it.
Omg I love this series sooo much!! I’m loving how there relationships between Lexie and her guys are developing. I’m glad they are working on their communication and that no one is avoiding their issues! Cannot wait to see what happens next! So happy BL Brunnemer started the new chapter in their lives with this new series! Perfect mix of supernatural and romance and suspense!
I didn't even know the book was out until I randomly searched and started screeching immediately. Everyone is back, they are slightly older and still going through it. I love every bit of this, how each relationship has developed and seeing how everyone is changing. I'm soooo happy this series is back. Canceled my whole day and read until I was done, as usual B.L Brunnemer will not disappoint.
BL has brought back all the feels and some great naughty times. The witches are bees with itches. The wolves are bees with itches, well not all of them. The Templars are still trying to find their butts with a flashlight. Not much has changed except our girl and guys are gluing together even more. Great start to adulting Lexie, Zeke, Miles, Ethan, Isaac, and Ash.
***please feel free to insert appropriate curse words in my review.
The long awaited continuation of the Veil diaries finished too soon. I am over the moon that we were able to continue Lexi’s and the guy’s story. We have a plethora of new characters and that have given us too many variables to be able to predict what will happen next. The wolves, the coven, the templars, new friends and associates and the all mysterious sorcerer and where are the gargoyles? Cannot wait to see where their stories take us! BD
I loved getting to see the gang back together again!! I missed them so much. Everything is progressing so much. The relationships, the steam, the magic, and the supernatural. Lexie had to deal with so much in this book and I can’t wait to see what she does next! Excited for the next book! I missed all the guys and I loved seeing how all the guys back up Lexie whenever they can!
