This short story follows a day in the life of two people living in a post-apocalyptic world.
The storytelling is masterfully subtle. I was on the lookout for the standard post-apocalyptic players: zombies, cannibals, fanatical religious cult members, et cetera ..., so it took me a while to notice what was going on. None of the usual suspects are the cause of the central conflict, which was refreshing. And I did not see the final twist coming.
As with the best post-apocalyptic fiction, the focus is on the relationships between survivors as well as the need to protect the most vulnerable who are usually children.
