From Kohta Hirano, the creator of Hellsing , comes Drifters , an action-packed fantasy epic where warriors and warlords from Earth's history are transported to an alien world to intervene in a worldwide civil war.
At the eye of the storm is the Black King who, desiring more than land and resources, is uniting the non-human races for a single purpose—the genocide of humanity. Drifters Omnibus Volume 2 collects Drifters volumes 4, 5 and 6 with 688 pages of all-out mystical mayhem!
Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension. His first major success came with his manga series Hellsing, which got its start and was subsequently serialized in a monthly manga magazine, Young King OURs, towards the latter half of 1997.
That was - what is the word? ... Cringe. Are kids still calling things cringe?
The story has such potential. The first omnibus had a lot of potential. But after some interesting developments in the story with a bit of world building. It just kind of went, let the story become super dumb just when everything else in the story was coming together. Like the writer just rolled some dice to see what happened next and rolled a natural 1.
Another fun read by Kohta Hirano as the Drifters take the fight to the Ends, only with dire consequences. Hirano continues to have fun with the concept of warriors throughout history fighting in a fantasy land, and while the tone is a bit uneven from the humor to the drama, it makes for a unique read. It is matched by his art, which does a great job balancing the insane action and crazy humor as well. While not perfect, one of the more entertaining mangas in recent memory.
