The Hobgoblin unmasked - but what does it mean for Spider-Man?
Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz lay a trail of clues that leads to…the Hobgoblin! The heir apparent to the Goblin mantle — and the title of #1 nemesis in Spider-Man’s life — has been a compelling mystery since his debut. When his shocking identity is revealed, will you be able to believe it? And when the cosmic Beyonder returns, Peter Parker and the Puma will pair to face him with Mephisto waiting in the wings. Spidey’s exploits will also bring him back to his early days and Crusher Hogan, the pro wrestler he grappled with way back in AMAZING FANTASY #15. And topping off this Masterworks volume is the stunning painted art and color of Bernie Wrightson in the Spider-Man graphic novel Hooky!
Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 271-278, Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) 111, Marvel Graphic Novel (1982) 22, material from Marvel Fanfare (1982) 27
271 (DeFalco) ★★★★ Crusher Hogan (the wrestler guy Spidey fought back when he first got his powers) has an issue with a bad guy at his gym and Aunt May's boyfriend Nathan's paat catches up with him.
272 ★★★ New Villain Slyde and more of Nathan's story. Aunt May sure was treating Peter badly!
273 ★★★★ Puma and the Beyonder. Better than I expected. Lots of drama in Peter's personal life.
274 ★★ Beyonder vs Mephisto. Pointless. I couldn't tell what was real.
275-276 ★★★ Hobgoblin. Spidey calling it quits. Flashbacks to becoming Spidey. Flash & Betty Drama.
277 - Two mini stories. Daredevil & Kingpin ★★★★ & Winter nightmare. ★★★
278 - ★★★★ Flash is in jail. A mystery killer has been murdering bad guys and he's now after Flash.
The weaker back end of DeFalcos run. Mostly just tie-ins for Secret Wars II, which were pretty mediocre and his stretched out Hobgoblin storyline which just doesn't seem to end. Not bad, but his previous stuff was better.
A fun collection of stories in the latest Spider-Man anthology, including the delightful graphic novel "Hooky". Lots of troubles for Spidey and his friends (and enemies) to keep the plots bubbling along.
