This sturdy board book is tender and sweet. Each two page spread evokes an image and an uplifting phrase to validate the child and likely bond them with reader. Cartoonish art is vivid and images enhance the phrase, such as the sprinkles on the ice cream, the seashells in the bucket, etc. Overall, it is sentimental and endearing. I question the one page where it says "You're the one I love the most". As a person who has cats not kids, do you show this kind of favoritism? Do you say this to each of your kids?
Same formula as Gehl's "You're the Pumpkin in my Pie." Both are perfectly benign and loving books. I do worry about anchoring on the adult as the sun, the center of the universe, with a child being an accessory to the parent. But more so in Sprinkles that Pumpkin, the child is the very best part of each entity. Also similar to Pumpkin, there's no obvious way to end a string of metaphors, so it falls a little flat with "You're the twinkle in my nighttime, I'll always hold you tight."
Each time I read this book, it brings a smile to my face. What child doesn't want to be the sprinkles on a parent's ice cream? Or the ketchup on your hot dog...or the sparkle in your sea....or.... It's so fun! I know multiple wee ones who are going to love this book as soon as auntie sends it their way!
Super sweet in every way! A series of loving sentiments ranging from “You’re the sunshine in my morning” to “You’re the butter on my toast” make this bright and cheery rhyming board book one you’ll want to read over and over…with the one YOU love most!!
