Really fascinating history and some lovely prose, but dreadfully muddled in structure. Was it badly edited? Lots of great stories but just as a character becomes interesting that story stops - to be continued later with no rationale - and another starts. Dates and places not followed in any logical order. Shame for the underlying history is tremendous and unknown.
