Irma Hersel is a bilingual children’s author based in Camarillo, California. Drawing from her Mexican-American heritage and her background in communication and design, she writes warm, imaginative stories that celebrate culture, family, and curiosity.
She holds a BFA in Communication from Kendall College of Art and Design and later earned her MBA, blending creativity and strategy in her approach to storytelling and independent publishing.
Her debut picture book, Where Nopalitos Grow, introduced young readers to cultural traditions and the beauty of bilingual exploration. Although she never planned on creating a series, her second book, Where Chocolate Grows, came naturally—and became a meaningful way to continue honoring her cousin Bobby, whose memory inspired her writing journey.
Irma’s mission is to help every child feel seen, valued, and connected—no matter which language they dream in.
This was a brilliant story full of culture and life. This story follows Roberto on a journey through his dreams. While in his dreams we see the amazing world his family is from . We get to explore the culture, the sounds, the sights and the magic . I am in love with this story. Not only does it have vibrant bright illustrations but we are moved as if we are in the dream with Roberto and his family. We learn about the food, the music, his Abulea’s garden and all the magic from the Mexican village. We just can’t get enough of this story. So wonderfully written and easy for children of all ages to understand. My son loves imagining he is there with Roberto. This was a wonderful way to introduce him to new cultures and experiences. The possibilities are endless to continue the story in the classroom.
This is one of those books with something wonderful for multiple audiences. For young Mexicans, it touches on plants and music and food and tradition in a way that instills pride, and for others, it introduces the same and has some beautiful illustrations of the countryside and ancient pyramids.
The text is crisp, the secondary message of marking and remembering one's dreams is also a good one, and it is brief enough to keep a child's interest.
This book takes its readers on an adventure in the mind of a young boy. The dreams have detailed descriptions about places and food local to Mexico. It teaches readers about some of the cultural pleasures. The flow of the writing could use some work as it’s a little confusing when the boy is dreaming or awake.

This is a fun story about Mexican culture. The Nopalitos were a great addition to the story; some cactus can be used for cuisine. The other food featured looks very yummy and the pictures are great. I really enjoyed reading this book.
