wowsie

Wowsers, this was quite a ride! I had no idea what to expect and I’ve never really read anything like it before. It’s well written and definitely very dark and I suppose it is indeed suitable for adults and teens, but I think it’s written more toward adults because the writing style is directed toward a more advanced reader. Definitely a roller coaster

unique and interesting read

“Death’s Gifted Soul” was a unique love story, written in the form of a journal. The author has a gift for setting an eerie tone, while taking her readers on a journey through bits of the main character’s lives. Because I only caught a glimpse with each journal entry, chapter, I wanted more of her story. It was the same for the male character of the story. So, while the writing was very good, I guess Ill have to get the next book to feed my curiosity 😊

Scary tale

I like how the author takes you on Amara's terrifying trip. She has experienced demonic forces and battles them on her own. This book is creative, a page turner, and the story gave me goosebumps. Great story.

Gothic / horror genre romance but better suited to a YA audience

Death gifted soul is a long short story which I would class as a 'dark fantasy' about a woman named Amara. It is fairly well written and reads like much of traditional gothic fiction in tone and setting. It is focused on the relationship between Amara and a mysterious figure who enters the story fairly early on and her interactions with 'the dark world'

This will be a critical review, but I hope it reads as constructive criticism as that is how it is meant.

Positives :

Amara is a fairly well developed charecter and most of the story is told from her first person perspective.

decent prose style : The writing is direct but also loaded with poetic metaphors and is crafted well overall.

Journal - The story being told in the form of a journal is novel and well done with a decent degree of logical internal consistency.

Negatives / crit
- at times I felt the writing and feeling of the story was overly melodramatic. This figures given it is a romance story but it sullied my full enjoyment at times.

Pacing
- The pacing occasionally felt off kilter. Especially towards the end. One chapter would end and then suddenly amara is randomly fighting demons again without much context as to why / how.

Lore -
The Dark world provided an oppurtunity for a lot of lore and worldbuilding however there is never really much sufficient time given to explaining or eloborating on it, so it can feel at times somewhat one dimensional and an underdeveloped aspect of the story. I found myself feeling a bit confused as the story develops as to why the magical aspect exsists in the world or that I had any insight into the magical forces behind it. Perhaps this was intentional but I found myself wanting to get some more background informatoom on it, given it is fantastical in nature.

Central romance : This is probably just my own taste talking but at times the central romance seemed a biy juevinile and too 'twilight' alike for my tastes. It's probably not aimed at me though to be fair but it seemed a bit cliched. This was my least favourite aspect of the story.

Overall YA readers of gothic lit and dark fantasy books will enjoy this. It has a lot of action and a central romance which if not anything groundbreaking, some readers will find compelling.

Adult / mature readers however may feel that it is a bit light on substance compared to other examples of gothic / horror lit I think and doesn't develop enough out of familair tropes at times.

For YA readers of horror fiction though I think many will enjoy this story. I would especially reccomend it to fans of Buffy the vampire slayer in many ways as I was reminded of that at several points in the story.

“Death’s Gifted Soul” is a haunting paranormal romance story that departs from the usual. The protagonist, Amara, goes through several reincarnated lifetimes, knowing that love is missing in her life. Then, in her last incarnation, she meets a man who shows up to save her every time she is in danger. Could this finally be the lover she’s been searching for?
This is an emotionally gripping story of a woman searching for a love that only exists in her mind. The elements of Amara’s journey create a unique and compelling narrative that adds complexity and keeps the reader turning the pages with a plot twist you don’t see coming.

Original

Elara’s take in Death’s Gifted Soul was definitely original. I enjoyed this read though I wished it was longer. I think the premise of this would make a good movie.
