This follow-up to the disgustingly popular Natures Yucky! takes young naturalists and other lovers of foul facts and icky information on an expedition to the American Southwest. Natures Yucky! 2 introduces readers to sixteen desert creatures and vividly answers such scintillating scientific questions How does the regal horned lizard squirt blood from its eyes? Why do dung beetles eat poop? Why does the piglike javelina smell like stinky socks? Astonishingly detailed illustrations capture not just Mother Natures revolting qualities but her stunning beauty. With its Eeewww!! Thats YUCKY! refrain, the book is especially fun for reading aloud. Serious scholars will enjoy gathering further information about each animal in the More Fun Facts section. Those with an appetite for further yuckiness can use the kid-friendly recipe for raven-gut upside-down cake or sing the Natures Yucky!song. There is also a list of books and Web sites to encourage further scientific exploration.
My Review: Children will find Nature's Yucky! 2 an interesting book to read, boys especially will love to learn about the different animals and reptiles from the Southwest of America. Learn about the 16 desert creatures and the answers to such scintillating scientific questions asked in the book.
Learn about the Regal Horned Lizards, Camel Crickets, Kangaroo Rats, Sonoran Skinks, Red Satyr Butterflies, Western Hognose Snakes, Common Ravens and many more.
The last few pages offer additional information about the various wild animals mentioned, and also learn how to make a Raven-Gut Upside Down Cake.
Illustration by Rachel Rogge captures the history of each of these desert creatures. I highly recommend this book for all and non animal lovers who don’t mind the Yucky.
FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
Great research or pleasure read for those interested in learning more about desert creatures. Outstanding illustrations and easy to understand language. The Resource section in the back of the book was greatly appreciated. The "Raven-gut Upside Down Cake" recipe is mouth watering. Glad we bought this book at the Ocotillo Wells Discovery Center.
I think this book is fantastic. I am a science teacher and a mother of 4. my boys absolutely loved it and want to read it over and over again. Each time I say one of the gross things they laugh and help me with the repetitive line. I love a good book that sparks interest in nature, even if it is based on weird and gross things.
