I never read many Spidey books growing up and have never really gotten into his corner of the Marvel universe. The Ultimate Spider-Man series is such a good entry point, even as it departs in significant ways from the status quo. I can’t get enough of the scenes with the Parker family, and I love that the book isn’t in a rush to jump into some huge stakes adventure. We’re along for the ride with Peter, MJ and co.
I start to like this series more and more. Everything seems to be right in the familiar place – Peter's a smartass, Mary Jane is hot, you name it. But due to the Earth-61610 twist, everything seems fresh and interesting.
The art also starts to pick up the pace, Marco Checchetto's classic Spidey poses are nothing but spectacular and amazing (pun inteded).
Can’t imagine this isn’t the best 2024 series so far. The art actually outshines Hickman’s writing in this issue, which of course is as top shelf as it gets. Get out the protective plastic sleeves with cardboard backings for this run!
Ultimate Spider-Man #3 by Hickman is just plain fun. Ben’s great, Jonah’s already stirring the pot, and Peter’s balancing Bullseye, Green Goblin, and real life like a pro. Smart, sharp, and a blast to read
This issue flew by but I still liked what was here a lot. Pete’s classic suit being born from childlike wonder is a really nice touch, and I’m once again very intrigued to see how Hickman handles this new wrinkle he’s putting on Peter and Harry’s relationship.
LIV REDD.
I literally started smiling while reading this issue. This hasn't happened before. Hickman weaves a narrative brimming with heart, humor, & action, proving that there was always room for a new spin on a classic tale for an author daring enough to go there. This book continues to merge all of the elements together very well. We start with the family dynamic, then move to Ben and Jonah, and finally into the Spider-man portion. I have two problems with this issue. The first is that the bomb explodes in the Goblin's hand. This would have blown his hand off, no matter what kind of armor he was wearing. The second is the pairing of the two armor technologies. This would never work. Stark would have installed walls and failsafes. Aside from that, it was a very well-written issue.
That ending was fire. Wow. Cannot wait to see how it develops!! I’m so mad that the translation delays the real-time releases of the original; in the US they’re already at #8 while we’re stuck with an upcoming #4. But honestly I can wait if that means supporting the local comic shops. I’m so excited for the next issue.
Though we pretty much knew that Harry was going to be Green Goblin, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t gasp out loud once I got to his unmasking panel. But introducing himself to Peter? A potential team-up?? I never would have expected it! I’m just in love with this series this far. It exceeds my expectations and anything I could have predicted.

This issue is way better than the last two. This issue makes the other two look like previews. Hickman shouldn't have waited so long to deliver this.
But don't get me wrong, I still feel cheated. Maybe the story is getting back on track but that doesn't change the fact that they advertised the series as "What if Peter Parker didn't get his powers until adulthood?" and presented instead a version of Spider-Man with a background so different that hardly resembles the character we know as "Peter Parker".
However, it's good that after 2 lackluster issues, the story finally seems compelling. With good editorial direction this would be gold, but sadly, that's not the case.
I stand by what I said before: The story would be much better if Tony Stark had exposed Peter to new circumstances in which he obtained the powers without him knowing. This issue proves me right.
[SPOILERS]
It is implied here that Harry Osborn, the Green Goblin, is involved with Tony Stark. If Hickman was planning on having Harry do exposition to Peter anyway, wouldn't it have been better if Peter didn't know anything at all about the origin of his powers instead of having chosen them???
Also...
"he's extremely photogenic and, to me, seems to be a much more compelling --and dare I say charming-- character. A real man of the people... Just an opinion."
WHAT? Since when does Peter flatter himself so much? "Kinda defeats the whole anonymous superhero thing", you know? It's not funny, it makes him look dumb.
"Stakeout time. Always wanted to do one of these. Not exactly sure how but I can figure it out..."
I'm telling you. DUMB!
"...if you can't play nice, maybe you shouldn't play at all!"
Cheesy but OK, I do think that's something Spider-Man would say.
"I haven't actually caught anyone before. What should I do?"
Mister, how old are you? Sigh. The sole purpose of that line is to open the door for Harry (the true competent hero of the story as ironic as it may seem) to do more exposition.
"(...) it is cool."
Meaning: "Duh! My costume is so cool!" "I'm so cool!" "Look at me!" "I'm a cool superhero!" MY GOODNESS! Peter is so out of character!
Bullseye also speaks way more than he should, way too much exposition, and I don't think a psycho like him would describe himself the way he does here: "A killer loose in the world. An actual predator in the wild." Nah. That's more like the way another character would describe him (someone like a cop or a detective), doubtedly the way he would describe himself. Hickman should have left it at "I'm a predator" or "I'm a hunter, and you're my prey".
Mary Jane is still bland and, although there is some competent dialogue, most of the dialogue is still clumsy, and (as you can see) there are also times when Hickman tries to be funny but, in my opinion, he's not.
Hickman gets major points for recognizing Peter as the girl-dad that he is. Once we get the obligatory suit cameo session (including a cool rendition of Ben Reilly’s), we return to Peter’s vigilante antics, where he finally gets a W… along with an L. Typical Parker luck, huh? I’d say the panel with Peter sitting in the rain with a shoddy web tarp summarizes how much fun he’s having thus far. Like, sure, he and Harry beat Bullseye (who looks sick in this universe), but his identity gets blown. And considering Harry’s trajectory in Earth-616, that can only lead to problems down the line. There’s also some development with Ben and Jonah’s side-business, and I’m hoping to see more on that front! Another 9/10 from me!
Yet another classic cliche has become inverted here, new friendships spawning at the reveal of a face rather than ripped apart. It's the start of a relationship, sure, lingering with the possibility of friendly status quo or gut-wrenching tragedy. It's how a To Be Continued should be handled, the guessing not just about plot possibilities but where this all arcs thematically, what is beginning to be said by the story.
The moment the suit got revealed, I starting going bananas!!
LOVE THIS ISSUE! I love the reveal of the suit and how Peter’s daughter was the reason it exists, Bullseye was sick as fuck and love him in this issue, and GREEN GOBLIN RAAAAAAH! The fact Harry and Peter don’t know each other and this is how they’ll develop their friendship is so crazy and an interesting take. This series so fas has legit been full of crazy turns that make so much sense I just want MORE
A breezy middle of the road issue, directly sending off from the previous turn in the story. Peter Parker is Spider-Man and now his daughter May Parker also knows. There's A few more twists from there but this isn't where the house of cards falls. Still good though.
Ok, I can’t lie. This issue was funny and cold (in a great way).
Harry (Green Goblin) Bluetooth connecting to Peter’s (Spidey’s) suit is actually fucking hilarious. Also, working together to beat some unknown threat’s ass unexpectedly was pretty cool.
This is getting enjoyable quickly. I might have to slow down and savor.
