A flashback reveals how Megu-nee's time at the school begins as Kurumi struggles with a zombie infection.
3.5 stars This is a fun little series. Three of the four girls fully realize what's going on while the third is lost in her head to the point of not realizing there's been a zombie apocalypse (or maybe she's starting to realize it? It's really not clear). I'm totally rooting for these four!
Still going strong, though the visual tension is still lacking in comparison with the story. A solid 4.5 stars, just not enough to merit that fifth star.
This was another dark but great volume. The reveal that Megu-nee was the one to bite Kurumi was heart-breaking, and even though Megu-nee needed to die, her death still got to me. I'm curious about how the next issue will go, given where this left off.

Okay so! Miki got away or killed Megu-nee and successfully retrieved medicine for Kurumi since she let herself get attacked by zombie Megu-nee. Okay, finally, I get to know more about who Megu-nee was and what she had to do in the zombie attack, but she turned into a zombie herself. After that, the group finds more food and useful things that they didn't know they had in the school, thanks to newly found information in the booklet that Miki found. After that, more slice of life, cutesy stuff.
So, I'll be honest, I thought this series would stay just a simple slice of life, but I now see the progression. I'm a little worried for the characters. Countless zombie films/books/etc always show that once military or other survivors get involved, things quickly sour. I remain optimistic, but I'm not fooled. I'm going to be heartbroken soon, aren't I? =(
It’s growing on me. The characters are more psychologically complex than I first thought, and it’s interesting to see how they interact. I appreciate that we also get a little bit of an adult perspective in this volume. It helps make the world seem more real.
Poor Megu-nee, she took so much blame when it was definitely, NOT her fault......though I wonder why her "will" says that Yuki is her fault.....that is still....unexplained.....what did Megu-nee do to Yuki?

Kurumi has been bitten/clawed by Megu-nee zombie, it just broke my heart again to see one of my favourite girls going through this. Thankfully there is medicine in that dreadful basement, but since I read the other volumes already... *sighs* No, I won't tell you more than this.
Miki is on a mission to get the medicine. Why her? Why the most shy girl? Because she has no connection to Megu-nee. She doesn't know her personally, like the other girls do. So it is up to her to get through Megu-nee and get what is necessary. I have to say that it was a shame that we didn't see much more exploring of the basement at that point. I get that medicine is important, but for me it feels like Miki got it in an instance, without any difficulty other than Megu-nee. It was heartbreaking how Miki and Megu-nee met, what Miki said, and then what she had to ultimately do. :(
In the mean time Rii-san is keeping watch over Kurumi, making sure she isn't going anywhere. Making sure that preparations are there in case poop really hits the fan. It was just so sad to see Rii-chan have to make that decision. A decision no one ever wants to make. A decision that you know you have to do, because you don't want your friend to turn into that. You want to stop the pain. But it is a tough decision. I know that many people wouldn't be able to do it when it comes to it (read too many zombie books were people have to make such a decision, only to have them break-down).
It seems Yuki is also slowly gaining more and more of the real world and not the fantasy one that Yuki created in her mind to protect herself. Which broke my heart even further. You can just see that she cannot handle this reality. It is too painful. You see how far she is falling in the rabbit hole. I wish she would confide in her friends, tell them what is happening to her, telling them how she feels.
We also see some parts through Megu-nee's eyes (before she turned zombie), I was pretty impressed that she dragged herself to that place. Plus we get confirmed that she knew about the booklet, and also has read it. How that tore her apart. Knowing that this wasn't an accidental thing. Knowing that people from school knew about it. We see how it breaks her. I just wish she had talked to the girls before poop hit the fan. I know she wanted to wait, I know it wasn't safe, but maybe if she talked with them properly they could have figured out a way. Plus it wouldn't have hurt the girls as much as it did now when they did find out about it.
Next to all these heartbreaking things we have the girls go to the basement (now it is safe) and sort through the stuff there, find more medicine, and discover a whole lot more.
And the next volume will bring the helicopter and all that happens with that. If I remember correctly that will be the catalyst for them to leave. For them to graduate. They are already slowly working towards it, but I believe in the next one they have to make the decision for real.
All in all, a fantastic volume in this series. I will also be reading Volume 5, and after that I am done with my re-read for this series. I can't wait for this series to start again, I really miss the updates and finding out what is happening to the girls, to the world.
As a whole, I still feel that the pacing to the anime adaptation of School-Live! is better than in the manga, and volume 4 helps illustrate this. There is a good bit of tension toward the beginning, where the focus is strongly on Kurumi's condition, but in the middle sections, things slow down a lot. There's quite a bit of time spent on flashbacks, and the existential woes that are a part of any lengthy zombie story. But then there's the ending. Oh, that ending. That alone has me very excited to see what volume 5 has in store, because things are actually moving.
I like the characters and all, but until the thing with Kurumi and the emergency plans, it felt like they were just kind of...getting by, living their lives day by day with no real impetus to move beyond their (relatively) safe little enclave. With what happens in the last chapter of this volume, that seems all poised to change. And I can't wait.
