While I did enjoy this from a character building perspective, I hope that the Ultimate line drops this “happening in real time” gimmick after Tony and the Ultimates reveal themselves. It isn’t doing any favors for the pacing, since it feels like relatively very little has happened in the span of four months. I know that Hickman’s stories are usually on the slow side, but I still want to see a little more plot progression from issue to issue.
4/5🕷️’s Ironic that the cover features so much coffee, bc this is definitely the slowest issue so far. But still solid. Guest artist is a slight drop off from Checchetto. Looking forward to the next one.
A Spider-Man comic without Spider-Man in it. And Harry’s right. Peter’s got to tell MJ. Loved the story and art. Keep writing this well and I can forget all about the mess they made with the regular one.
in the hands of a lesser writer this issue would’ve bored me to tears. definitely slower than the previous three and marco’s art is missed, but I appreciate a story that takes a breather from time to time
I saw someone write a review that this was a Spider-Man comic without Spider-Man in it. They were absolutely correct. The majority of this comic was about business and money deals.
The ending finally featured some discussion on the web slinger, but that’s it.
I really like the slower pace of this series so far. It's not racing to get Spidey into 100% action all the time and takes the time to set up some pieces.
Not a big fan of the art change in this issue, and I see it's also for the next issue. It just has that modern digital look that never really vibes with me. Really missing Marco's flair here.
Harry Osborn as green goblin saying "with great power comes great responsibility" almost made me shed a single cinematic tear and i wouldve looked out the window sighing while holding a hot cup of tea and wrapping my cardigan around myself while slowly shaking my head and closing my eyes with a little smile.
This has truly become something special right here. This is just the issue USM needed, more slower one that focuses on characters and their relationships. I loved every page and I was hooked on the dialogue. Despite the slow pace I really appreciated the opportunity to see more of the individuals we'd be seeing going forward and in a subtle fashion. The art change should have been up to the previous issues standards but here it's really just run of the mill. Harry and Gwen are instantly memorable. And Peter learns the most important of all lessons.
Ultimate Spider-Man #4 has Harry and his wife Gwen having dinner with Peter and MJ that’s packed with fun, thoughtful dialogue. It’s all about roles, purpose, and identity—with a clever twist on the classic “great power” line. Everyone’s in a new place, and it’s working.
It was a boring issue but it was more focused on establishing the universe and characters and with any Spidey Story those are never boring! Not everything needs to be action to be good!
This entire issue was entirely just two couples talking at a dinner date, and I absolutely loved it. I can’t believe Hickman can get away with that. I can’t believe Marvel editorial has enough confidence in him to allow him a Spider-Man issue with no “Spider-Man.” But boy I am so glad they did. The tension is rising here, and this issue was certainly not uneventful. This is the series I most look forward to getting at my LCS each month, and I cannot wait to see where this leads.
Not too much of an action-packed story this time around, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t any less thrilling. I sense some tense feelings between the Parkers and the Osborns that I feel only the next issue will elaborate on. What can I say? I’m bad at making inferences. I just hope Gwen and MJ will get along nicely. They’d make such an awesome team.
Although I love Gwen, I have to comment on the lack of Liz Allan, Harry’s wife in the 616 canon. But hey, I won’t hate on her just for that.
This one dropped the ball for me. It looks like Marco Checcheto got busy somehow, since he has been replaced by guest artist David Messina for this issue and apparently for #5 as well. It certainly made me realize that a large part of why I was so impressed by this series so far was indeed Checchetto, the end of June when he comes back can't come quickly enough for me.
Since this issue is a bit of an intermezzo between the action-packed issues, covering just a single dinner date, it should be a piece of cake. Messina choses weird angles, the faces he draws come out strangle distorted. How can one draw such bombshells as Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy leaning in and doing makeup in such a hideous way truly baffles me.
The dinner date felt boring to me. There was a slight hint of foreshadowing of future falling out between Peter and Harry (it's Harry Osborn, after all), but the lack of action got to me. I'll definitely keep reading, the series has been excellent so far. If I had picked up this as a first issue, I wouldn't keep going.
The reunion we’ve been waiting for! I love the dynamic between Peter, MJ, Gwen, and Harry from Earth-616, but it’s a different kind of interesting on Earth-6160. I love how despite their genuine intentions, Harry and Gwen are just slightly off in their interactions with Peter and MJ. We all know that something’s going to go wrong with Harry, but I’m curious to see the thorn that Gwen will play in their sides. I’m guessing she’ll be more of an antagonist to Ben and Jonah since they’ll want to do actual journalism for the operation she’s bankrolling; I liked the cutaways to the two babysitting Peter’s kids, by the way. But what makes this even more unsettling is that Harry’s the one to give Peter the iconic responsibility line. While it’s always uplifting in other adaptations, I got a nefarious vibe here. Maybe it’s this sense of responsibility that’ll push Harry into doing something reckless or morally dubious. Only time will tell. But this was yet another incredible issue! (9/10)
Reading it in parallel with the other Ultimates, man does it just nail pace. Not a fight to be had in this issue in the physical sense, but a dinner date wrangles all kinds of purposefully dissonant 'til now ideas into a focused plot. It's not that 'nothing happens this issue' in an anti-comics sense, its that this issue really highlights how much fertile ground for both drama and ideology in the Spider-Man story doesn't have to focus on fist fights. Even Ditko had an issue that made it a point to dodge a Sandman fight and have Peter really reconstitute his self, mentally. Again, Ultimate Spider-man is remixing and revisiting common tropes and types of Spider-man stories, not like a Greatest Hits Nostalgia facsimile, but more a re-examination of crucial and key to the character tenants, questioned and examined in the context of the contemporary.
Just when I think Jonathan Hickman can't impress me any more than he already has, this issue leaves me in genuine awe. Not only does Hickman have a flawless understanding of the essence of Spider-Man, he's able to express it in an extremely incisive and metatextual way. Truly, the only thing that happens in this issue is casual conversation between family and friends. Yet somehow, despite the incredibly simple framing, the fundamentals of what it means to be Spider-Man are expertly explored. And the art. OH THE ART. It's working in perfect tandem with the dialogue and the dialogue smartly takes a backseat to let the gorgeous visuals better express an idea when they can. This issue should be used as a reference on comics in universities. Seriously.
Ah, I really enjoyed that and a very Bendis issue, heavy on the dialogue but it was good to get to know more about Peter, MJ, Harry and the new Gwen. I liked how Gwen called Peter out, about not moving up, not progressing; it feels like a little dig about how he's been portrayed so far and in the past in the 616 and even in Renew Your Vows.
Cute like cameo by the Daily Bugle, Flatiron building at the end. Messina's art was good in this issue and didn't feel too far off Checchetto with Mathew Wilson's colours.
I read somewhere that the Execs at Marvel said that no one would b interested in a Spider-Man who was middle-aged and had kids. The article also said the Jonathan Hickman said, "I'll take that bet". Gave the Execs the finger and wrote Ultimate Spider-Man (2024). This series is phenominal! It is almost better than the Brian Michael Bendis run in the year 2000. This series is part of a larger storyline that will have u Googling what to read, but this title is better than the current Spider-Man titles (Universe 616).
What an amazing issue holy crap. The reveal that Gwen is with Harry OMG !!! Most of the issue was dinner with the crew but it was so amazing just reading and seeing how they’re all doing with a slight uneasy feeling in the air. Even without the action, I love the development of this world and how different it is from the typical Spider-Man timeline. Also, Harry delivering the famous quote instead…. HOLY SMOKES
Getting used to these in comics where they do have to pump in alot of dialogue to get the story prepped for some action to happen. Some iconic lines said by very different people in Spider-Man.
Seeing “With great power, comes great responsibility”, from Harry instead of Uncle Ben is super trippy to the classic lore, but I’m here for the ride.
Decent establishing issue, but I am an action head.

Fill-in artist is a little distracting, but not bad at all. The writing remains exceptional, and Hickman remains a favorite as a comic book writer. This series continues to subvert expectations for a Spider-Man series, and is much better than any current Spider-Man title. Recommended for any Spider-Man reader.
