Ex-special forces interrogator and demon-magnet Jake Hatcher went looking for trouble, and found it.
Finally able to be with the woman he loves, life for anyone else would seem charmed. But Hatcher’s good fortune came at a steep price. Two years after witnessing his former lover disappear into perdition, he may finally have discovered a way to free her. But the forces determined to stop him are hidden, and a deal with the Devil cannot easily be trusted.
Hatcher must discover for himself if he has what it takes to survive a battle of wit and wills with both an unknown contender for the Throne of Damnation and the being that has been its occupant since the dawn of Creation-- The Lord of the Underworld, the Father of All Lies, the Great Deceiver…

Hank's first short story, “Mugwumps,” appeared in the anthology Alone on the Darkside in 2006. In 2007, he and Gary Braunbeck won a Bram Stoker Award for the anthology Five Strokes to Midnight, which included three of his short stories.

The Angel of the Abyss is book three in the Jake Hatcher series. If you're thinking about diving into this one. I do recommend going all in, by reading Damnable and Diabolical first. Sure you can read any of them as a standalone novel, but they work much better as a series.
Before I get started on the review, I need to tip the proverbial hat to cover artist Dean Samed. Go ahead and blow it up to full screen. Check out the detail. I've read more than a hundred books this year and that is the best cover I've seen so far.
If you've never read a Jake Hatcher novel before, the following pretty much sums up his character...
...a man who knew in his heart he was damned for all eternity, who I am certain has always known that, whether it is true or not, and still chooses to do good, to fight for what is right. Not for his salvation, not for his God, but simply to do what a good man must.
The Angel of the Abyss begins with our intrepid hero in a cave looking for answers, what he found was a hoax. Where this leads is a wild ride involving demons, carnates (physically perfect females, the unusual hybrid offspring of a demon and a human), psychics, a special child, and a plot to throw hell into chaos. A story packed with explosive action from start to finish. Pure escapism.
Be sure to check your suspension of disbelief at the door and prepare for a kaleidoscope of images and a story that may seem convoluted at times, but will all come together in the end. And then get ready for the set up for the next story in the series. We just need to be patient while Hank Schwaeble puts pen to paper.
Look for Angel of the Abyss: A Jake Hatcher Novel available soon from Cohesion Press.
Hank Schwaeble is a writer and attorney in Houston, Texas. His debut novel, Damnable, won the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. He is also the author of Diabolical, and now The Angel of the Abyss (all three in the Jake Hatcher series). Hank is also the author of the horror-noir collection American Nocturne and numerous short stories.
Hank is an active member of the Horror Writers Association and the International Thriller Writers Association.
I just finished AOTA. I loved it. Jake is as good as ever. Tough guy quips all over. An ending that could be the end of an action packed trilogy, but nooooo. The last chapter reveals an even bigger story coming up. I just hope I won't have two years to wait for The Emperor of Shadows. If you love Paranormal stories and Kick-Ass heroes, look no further.
Another great Jake Hatcher adventure by Hank Schwaeble. This one suffers a bit from the lack of a compelling central villian but makes up for it with snappy dialogue and some cool horror set pieces. The character of Amy - Hatcher's ex-cop girlfriend - is the real stand out here. Sexy, smart and tough as nails, she steals every scene she's in. The book ends on a hell of a cliffhanger and sets up the next Hatcher adventure brilliantly. Hopefully we'll see more Hatcher adventures sooner rather than later. Cohesion Press is a great publishing company and their books look amazing. Cover for this one is no exception.
Hank Schwaeble’s Jake Hatcher is back in his third novel, The Angel of the Abyss. As always, and just like his short fiction, Schwaeble crafts a rollicking good tale that will keep you turning the pages.
The beginning of this tale has Hatcher facing a demon, although it’s more complicated than that, giving Hatcher time to exercise his sarcastic wit. Fans of Supernatural and Ash vs. the Evil Dead will definitely appreciate the humor.
The mood becomes more serious and dire in the second act. The middle of the book, unlike many writers who get bogged down at this point, is where Schwaeble really shines. He does a great job writing from the perspective of Amy, Jake’s true love, who is also a former cop. I actually enjoyed Amy’s scenes even more than Hatcher’s. The two of them fight like the proverbial married couple, of which, I’m sure, many readers will be able to relate.
Schweable also does a fine job of taking on the perspective of a young boy. We meet the boy while he’s in a precarious situation, and we know from the beginning that the boy will converge with Hatcher and Amy at some point in the story. I won’t spoil it for you, but I think you’ll be racing to the end to find out what happens.
Hatcher’s past is constantly catching up with him, complicating things, and fans of the series will get some closure on events that were set up in the previous volumes. New readers can start here; Hank does a great job of bringing you into Hatcher’s world. You won’t feel left out or confused.
The last third of the book builds up to a hellish crescendo leaving this reader wanting more. There are questions left unanswered, promising a fourth book in this popular series. The Angel of the Abyss has it all: likable characters, demons, black magic, possession, secret military installations, cults, and lots of action. If you want a story to get you in the mood for Halloween and beyond, pick up The Angel of the Abyss. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.
I received an advanced reading copy for my review.
