Emilia Scott is a psychology student at Watertown University who has just finished her junior year. The first three years of her college experience weren’t all that, as she was solely focused on her GPA, internships and working to support herself. However, with a great GPA, her graduate school applications lined up and only one year of college left she finally wants to finish the little list she made for herself in high school and there’s a green-eyed prince charming ready to help.
Liam Mills, captain of the baseball team, has been ignoring the nagging little voice in his brain thathas had him questioning his life decisions for the better part of a year. He has to stay focused on baseball; it's the one thing he’s been dedicated to his whole life. Making it to the major leagues isn’t just for himself, it’s also to fulfill his promise to his dad. The only problem is his heart isn’t in it anymore and seeing a specific blue-eyed beauty with passion in hers makes him come face to face with the thoughts he’s been pushing away for months.

This book has a lot of heart but it needs a re-write. Emilia meets Liam when she is at her first ever college party and a drunk frat guy gets a bit handsy and hurts her wrist. Liam comes to rescue her and seems to immediately fall in love. I find this a bit problematic, honestly, especially since later he has the "perfect" family and she has an absentee alcoholic mother who makes poor man decisions. They fall very fast for each other yet take a long time to tell each other. They are pretty awkward around each other, even after they begin dating. I don't understand the decisions they make and I don't understand why they like each other, except that Emilia kind of puts her whole future into him and he becomes this rescuer. She is working a few menial jobs, this is set up that she is likely going to lose herself in him. Her mother could have been a really interesting character, but she hardly has any scenes and barely any dialogue. I would add at least two more scenes with her, a disagreement with Emilia and then a heart-to-heart that helps us understand and makes her more complicated.
I am a fan of low-spice, closed door romance, and it is hard to find the chemistry sometimes. This story has potential but ultimately fell flat.

It's undeniable that there's a bit of romantic tension between the main characters, but the transition from acquaintances (?) to lovers felt somewhat weak. Emilia was a bit harder to connect with. Her fragile, closed-off nature and the emotional baggage she carried made her character feel distant at times. It was challenging to get fully invested in her growth. On the other hand, Liam was a great guy. His protective instincts toward Emilia and the way he was portrayed as caring toward his family made him much likable.
However, by the end of the book I felt like something was left unfinished. Certain plot points or emotional arcs didn’t feel fully resolved which left me wanting just a bit more closure. That being said, for a debut novel this was a sweet and enjoyable read. I'll definitely still recommend this book to anyone looking for a light, cute romance.
Highly recommended Clara’s Debut novel!! Brought me right back to college (as a fellow Bear lol) from the classic college bar to the local coffee shops! I could picture it all! Plus this super cute story that captured my heart immediately couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait for the next Watertown University Novel! GO BEARS!!
if you’re looking for a heartwarming, cozy, lighthearted book this is the one! Clara Mott writes for those hopeless romantic girlies💝
I loved how it was set through college and all the elements we all remember in those days haha! One of my favorite elements that I caught on throughout is that we followed Liam and Emilia’s love story through the seasons! So it had portions even through Thanksgiving and Christmas! I was watching Hallmark Christmas in July while reading this today and it was a vibe😂
We need to talk about how beautiful their devotion and love for each other is through this book. It is an instant love for them and us as a reader! The fact that he took care of her throughout the whole book and she eventually takes care of him gets me🥹
I loved how there was no third act breakup and had a build up to the next book in the series wonderfully!
Already missing the Bears and this cozy read! Can’t wait to read the next book this fall!⚾️🍔🐻
Tropes and main themes -friends to lovers (the BEST trope) -mutual pining -psych major + baseball captain -an all seasons book (focuses on Christmas a lot at one point) -little to no spice
The absolutely perfect cinnamon roll MMC who is a college baseball player, the perfect gentleman/protector
A strong book smart sweet FMC who cares so deeply for those in her life while dealing with a roughy childhood upbringing
There is no spice but lots of tension!! The pinning for each other while weighing the risk of potentially not having the other person in their life just is so lighthearted and sweet.
I didn’t want to put this book down the way the author creates such a sweet entanglement between these college students is spot on and keeps you wanting more and knowing what they will do next! How long will it take for these two characters to fall in love and declare it to each other along this journey.
In love with Clara’s debut novel! I could not stop giggling and kicking my feet throughout the entire book, I felt like I was the one falling in love with both main characters 🤭🩷 I loved the contrast & complexity in both Emi & Liam’s family backgrounds and the silent longing for something more in multiple aspects of their lives. This is such a beautifully written romance between the two!
This book was so cute! It was the perfect cozy little romance that I needed as a breather. Liam was such an amazing character and the best little superhero boyfriend a girl could wish for. I loved Emilia and Liam’s relationship and found myself constantly routing for their love.
This Story was a like a big fluffy hug, the romance sweet and soft, and both Liam and Emilia were incredible! The dates they go on were perfect, and I would definitely want a BF like Liam in my life.
Favorite quote out of context: "My last name looks good on you."
Thank you for giving me an ARC copy, it was totally worth it!
What a cute story! Liam is a complete gentleman and his story about his bio dad was just so beautiful, it made me emotional 🥹 I love his family and the way Emilia fits right into their dynamics. I love the found family trope and it was done so well in this one. Also, Emilia’s best friend Rosie is also so cute - maybe something is going on with her and Ryan too - hints for next book?! I hope so 🥰
Thank you, Clara, for the e-arc. I had a good time with this one. 🥰
Worth the Risk is a nice, sweet romance which I am sure will find a place in the hearts of many readers. I enjoyed the book, especially the latter half where it really captured all of those sweet romance swoon-worthy vibes, but there were a few things that slightly put me off the book (though nothing serious that in absolutely no way makes this book bad). The first thing I want to say is that the main characters were so fantastic and there is absolutely nothing more you could want in a male love interest. Liam definitely had my heart! I like the way that these characters are given their own little quirks and behaviours that make them uniquely them. The FMC was unique enough, but also relatable enough to really be able to imagine yourself in her place if you really wanted to experience that romance to that full extent. One thing to mention though, is that the final kind of plot moment is our MMC making a decision about what future he wants to take, and whether it is what he actually wants to do or what he thought he wanted to do. I loved this moment and I think it was such a good idea for the book to carry into the lives of readers, but I really do wish this had been lingered on more throughout the book and kind of some clearer spotlight earlier in the book. Initially, I did not connect with the book during the earlier half as the FMC before 40% way through the book is assaulted three different times to different extents by different people, and I just didn't know how realistic this actually was. It just felt like to some extent, all the male characters at this time in the book save the love interest and who are almost certainly going to be love interests in other books in this series were villainised. I just wish other ways of creating tension or drama were explored, because it just kind of became a little predictable. Additionally, at times, the way that the speech was delivered made it confusing as to who was actually saying it, as there were very little dialogue tags and actions of other people were directly put after these. So, this did kind of make me have to put a little more effort into the reading as I would have liked, and I do think this slightly took me out of the story as that flow was just not quite there at times. Overall, I enjoyed this book and I do reckon so many other readers will absolutely love this book. I think the author has a lot of potential and I will certainly be checking out her other works in the future to see how her writing develops. She has certainly found her place in writing cute romances and certainly knows who her target audience is as she serves exactly what they will be looking for.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 🌶️ 1/5 (no spice, lots of tension, only kissing!)
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read your adorable book early and share my honest thoughts with other readers! It was a pleasure! 💕
This was such a sweet throwback to being new to college and having to balance classes, work, friends, family, goals and a tiny bit of a social life! There was no spice, but lots of heart fluttering tension. This is definitely a book for those looking to kick their feet and squeal at how cute the beginnings of new romance can be.
Liam is just the perfect sweetheart, cinnamon roll book boyfriend, who is always so thoughtful and reliable and protective of Emi’s heart. I love how he both gives her space but always steps up when she needs someone to lean on. Honestly, I swooned so hard every time he thoughtfully brought her pastries! Ugh don’t get me started on the apple picking situation! SO CUTE!
Emi’s character was presented as “weak” on the surface for what I usually like to see female main characters written as (see: strong, independent, feisty), but in this case, it makes so much sense that she is still finding herself and discovering her strength after a sorted family past weighing her down and being a newly independent college girl. I think she’s a perfectly written combination of what it feels like to have the inner spark and emotional strength and resiliency of a young woman who will continue to become stronger and more fearless over time but that all has to start somewhere and she is so realistically written in that way.
If you are looking for a slightly older YA, that isn’t high school and brings you back to all the nostalgia of first year uni, including all the firsts with heaps of sweet romance, you will love this one! 💕💜
This book was so freaking cute. Omg. I was not expecting that!! 😍
It’s a quick read with a heartwarming story. I found myself reflecting on my own life and choices quite a bit.
There is something special about your senior year of college and Clara Mott captured it perfectly. There’s hope, wonder, anxiety and even some self doubt.
Emelia is a senior in college, embarking on a career she absolutely loves. Usually closed off and focused on her studies, she is surprised when she can’t stop thinking about a boy she met. I loved watching her character develop throughout the book, taking risks and going on adventures for the first time. She is so dedicated to her future and it was nice to see her relax a bit.
Liam is also a senior, gearing up to draft in the MLB, when he may have a change of heart. His character was sweet, funny, protective and all around lovable. It doesn’t hurt he had the cutest relationship with his family *swoon*
And the side characters?! Rosie is the best friend i could ever dream of. She’s a girl’s girl through and through. Ryan, Eliza and Garret were also extremely relatable. I wanted so badly to be in their circle 🫶
This is the debut novel by Clara Mott. It’s a sweet romance novel about Emilia who didn’t have a great upbringing who has spent her whole college career getting good grades and working to make ends meet. She agrees to go to a party with her best friend Rosie and meets a guy who isn’t a good guy. Through this experience she finds Liam who helped save her. Liam and Emilia have an immediate connection that starts a friendship. There is a slow burn of their relationship but it eventually leads to more (don’t worry there is a happily ever after). There are a few deep topics that are discussed in this book like parent neglect and past death of a parent. I think these add to this story so much because you really feel for these characters. Plus the feeling emoted within this book is so deep that you are pulled in and can’t stop reading until the end. I also loved the side characters in this story (Rosie and Ryan, Eliza and Garret) I hope they both get future books. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did!
I absolutely raced through this book. It is a short book, at just over 200 pages, but I still managed to race through the last 75ish% on apartment-cleaning day - a day when I thought I wouldn't get much read! Liam and Emilia were both great characters, well-suited to each other and generally lovely people despite being raised very differently. Liam's family were excellent! I loved their bond, with each other and how accepting they were towards Emilia. Emilia is very unfortunate throughout the book and I really felt for her, but I thought their meet cute was really adorable, albeit not in the best circumstances kind of. But they really helped each other through their troubles and I loved that. Also I think Liam is my food soulmate based on the food he ordered whenever they went out lol. I loved all the side characters and have already decided how books 2 and 3 are gonna go and I'm really excited to see if I'm right and read their stories!
This is my first Clara Mott book, and all I can say is she is now one of my top favorite authors. She has helped me enjoy romance books again. Literally could not put this book down. This book is about Emilia, a psych major, and her relationship with Liam, an athletic trainer major and baseball player. A baseball player y'all!!! This book had me giddy and feeling warm and cozy. Their relationship involves instantly falling in love but neither wanting to say. I loved that they took their time to get to know each other and that this story is not rushed and follows several seasons without dragging on. Liam can literally do no wrong. He is chivalrous, protective, and caring. If you love the who hurt you trope, you will love this book! Personally, I don't like spice, and this book has little to none. Can't wait to read the rest of the series. I really hope Ryan and Rosie are in the third book cause I was dying with their tension.
Thank you to the author for the ARC of Worth the Risk by Clara Mott. All opinions are my own.
This was such a lovely debut novel. I ended up reading it all in one day!
I loved how the author was able to write realistic characters with real problems but also kept the story mostly light-hearted. It was honestly the perfect balance.
I felt bad about how many negative situations Emilia found herself in. She was kind-hearted but didn’t always make the best decisions when it came to her safety. I do feel like her upbringing had a lot to do with that, so it was nice to see her grow despite her past.
Liam was adorable and such a kind friend. I loved how he built up a friendship with Emilia and went out of his way constantly to do thoughtful things for her.
This story is definitely a slow burn when it comes to the romance, but I did like how quickly the friendship formed between the main characters.
Liam’s family was super sweet, and I hope to see more of them in future books. I also hope to see more about Emilia’s best friend in other books because she was really interesting.
This book had so many sweet and romantic moments that made me grin ear to ear.
If you’re looking for a sweet college romance, then I would definitely recommend this one!
this was such a cutesy ya romance, friends to lovers that's to die for liam is such a green flag and the biggest cinnamon roll ever!!
this book can be easily be anyone's comfort read, it's light hearted and NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP and quick paced
liam and emilia are both seniors in their college, and they met at a party and liam is like instantly obsessed but the situation developed where they both were friend-zoned and both are afraid to risk their friendship that has grown in a such a quite time but liam is hell bent to be there for emi in any way he can (we love that so much) and it's honestly so cute how their growth has been shown and finally they confess
emi's bond with liam's family was so special and their friends' group is so AMAZING (i love you ryan, and i totally understand why he is so in love with rosie- i need their book next)
This debut novel from Clara Mott is 100% Worth the Risk of picking up. I found myself not wanting to stop reading even though I really needed to sleep. Let’s face it, what more do we ask for in a book than that? A story, characters or a world we don’t want to tear ourselves away from.
The characters felt like friends sitting in the room with me telling me about what happened to them today. The main characters, as well as side characters, were lovable and well developed.
The novel beautifully captured the sunshine, and romance of the magical time of a group of friends in their last year in undergrad.
I was so invested in the two main characters' romance and couldn’t get enough of them. Highly recommended!
I always labeled myself as someone who doesn’t like fluffy romances and decided to challenge myself with this book and man I was so wrong! Worth the risk had me crying laughing kicking my feet giddy af on the couch!!
I wildly and deeply resonated with the FMC Emilia as a daughter of a parent who struggles with addiction and someone who fell in love with and married someone who comes from a happy and loving home who just wanted to give me the love and safety I deserved so to read and watch the sweet and genuine love unfold and grow between the two main characters was truly a wholesome and emotional experience for me. I could not put the book down it was an easy and enjoyable read!
This book really is for those who believe in love no matter what!
This book was so well written that I was hooked from the very start. I love a friends to lovers romance, and this book didn't disappoint. Emilia and Liam were such brilliantly developed characters, from their encounter at the party to the slow development of something more than just friendship. Liam was such a caring and protective character who had great relationships with his friends and family. I love the found family vibes in this book, especially Emilia, and how she developed strong relationships with Liam's family. This book is perfect for fans of friends to lovers romances.
Favorite Quote: “I could never forget anything when it comes to you”
Favorite Character: Liam- He’s such a sweetheart and very much gives ‘I would move the mountains for you’ vibes.
Reading rating: 4.5 ⭐️
Review: This is a very cute Friends to lovers/ willing to risk it all romance novel. I loved the bond Liam and Emilia built together before the dove in to a full fledged relationship. Liam taking the care to pay attention to every detail and want of Emi was the sweetest thing and makes him a for sure perfect book boyfriend.
this adorable lil book follows Emilia & Liam throughout their journey of becoming friends to lovers. it includes some amazing side characters and some absolute pieces of shi+ characters who you just want to slam in a door lol. i loved getting to follow these two on their journey throughout the 230+ pages.
the mmc is just ugh, soo perfect. just absolutely head over heels for emi from the second he sets his eyes on her. this book has the perfect mix of tension + adoration + sadness and just straight up cheek hurting smiles.
Tropes- Strangers to friends to Lovers Closed door romance Soft romance Sports romance Traumatic childhood Found family Cinnamon roll MMC
I really liked the concept. There is not much suspense, a very soft and romantic novel. Really adored Liam and sort of, proud of Emilia to overcome her traumatic childhood and live a life of her own with super supportive friends.
Liam has loving family, really supportive characters and leads a really good life. He dreams of becoming a baseball player like his dad had been but it was only because he wanted to dedicate his work towards his dad. He meets Emi at a party and is instantly smitten with her. He wants her in his life but is scared to share his feelings.
Emilia is a very shy and soft-spoken character during the whole book. She too is instantly attracted to Liam and his protectiveness but is afraid that the feelings won't be mutual.
Both the characters support each other through their ups and downs and the way his family accepts them is just very beautiful.
The negatives I found in this book are- The story is very very fast paced and it feels like the paragraphs are distorted. There are sudden shiftings in scenes and sometimes you just get confused. I personally believe that the situation should be explained a bit more. Not too much by going out of the way and over-explaining but giving a little dimension to the situation. I felt it lacked there.
If ignored, the book is really beautiful and really rooting for the author to complete other books soon.
This is THE CUTEST thing I ever read and I'm not even exaggerating. For real I was just going "aaww" so many times while reading 🩷
Both Emilia and Liam are so sweet. Em is psychology major with a college bucket list and Liam is a gentleman baseball captain. Both having their own struggles but finding their happy safe space with each other.
Found family always gets me so when Em met Liams family, I was 🥹🥹🥹.
Relaxing, nice, easy and cute read, would recommend. Now I wanna know what happens to Ryan, Rosie, Garrett and Eliza👀
What i did like was- •Pacing of the book was good. •FMC (Emilia) was written very well and up to the point of a college student.
What i didn't like- •The book seemed a bit cheesy for my taste •There are many reasons for me not liking it but for me .....It's about James. Yes yes I know very unpopular opinion. But damn, that kid didn't do anything wrong from my pov. He was just trying to make things clear between Emilia and himself. Though I can understand he was not so lovable but like hell Liam was trying to call cops. Cops!? seriously?
This was a very cute, enjoyable love story! Both Emilia and Liam were cute and you could tell immediately that they belonged together. There were many sweet moments of them bonding and I had fun seeing them get to know each other. The one thing I will say is that Liam seemed almost too perfect. He didn't seem to have any real flaws, which made it a little less believable. Overall though, this was a cute, fun story!
* ARC * This book was adorable. I am in college and could definitely relate to a lot of things. Found Family is one of my favorite tropes and it was just perfect here What I really enjoyed about the main characters is that there was no rush. Their feelings grew for one another, and it wasn't about sexual tension. They both had their own pain and worked through it with each other. This is a clean romance book. It leaves some scenes up to interpretation if you want.
🩵 Friends to Lovers 🩷 Perfect Gentleman 🧡 Clean Romance 🩵 Sports Romance 🩷 Slow Burn 🧡 Found Family 🩵 Golden Retriever MMC 🩷 College Bucket List
Liam and Emilia met a college party. They had an instant connection. They became friends even though they both wanted to be more. These characters are so adorable! Their friendship was so sweet! They make the cutest couple 🩷 Liam was the perfect gentleman to Emilia through the whole book. I'm glad Emilia got her found family when she needed one. Emilia's best friend is so caring and supportive to Emilia. Liam and Emilia helped each other out when they needed it. I really enjoyed this story its very adorable story about Liam and Emilias' love story.
I really enjoyed this debut novel from Clara! It was sweet, swoony and of course had baseball in it!
Liam and Emilia were easy to root for and watching their story unfold made it hard to put the book down. Liam is the sweetest book boyfriend ever and Emilia is a girl you want in your friend group!
The writing was super descriptive and made you feel you were right there alongside the characters!
