Getting Wild

The Devil Wears Prada meets Man vs Wild in this fast-paced romantic comedy set in the no-holds-barred world of travel journalism.

When Ella Jameson steps into a room, people scramble to attention. She’s ruthless, terrifying, and untouchable — and very, very successful as Editor-in-Chief of Australia’s top travel magazine.

Then Ryan Edwards, adventure traveller, walks into her office with an unexpected job proposal, and Ella just knows he’s going to be trouble. As far as she’s concerned, the man’s a self-indulgent, kamikaze, adrenaline-junkie with an authority complex — and he’s also infuriatingly sexy! The idea of them working together is ludicrous, but the opportunity to co-host a new travel show is just too good to refuse.

As she is swept from her world of inner-city glamour into a nightmare of camping, crocodiles, and outback adventures, Ella’s feelings for Ryan begin to heat up, and her walls start to come down. In the tropical beauty of Australia’s Top End, it’s not just the weather that’s going to sizzle...

The female lead complains A LOT, but this is a really fun, sexy Australian romance with a great connection between to 2 lead characters.

Ella Jameson is the editor-in-chief of Australia’s most successful and respected travel magazine. She has dragged the publication up to the success it enjoys now and her reputation as a hard taskmaster precedes her. Now that the magazine has been sold, Ella knows her job is safe – she’s got the readership numbers to ensure that. But she also wants to make sure that her small team, which she put together personally, is safe as well and so she drives them harder than ever towards perfection.

Then adventurer Ryan Edwards walks into her office with a proposition. He wants her to co-host a new travel television show with him, where they go to a location and report on attractions, facilities and accommodation. He will handle the more adventurous type activities and she will stick to the luxurious end of the scale. He thinks it will be ratings dynamite.

Despite being intrigued, Ella isn’t so sure. She’s never even screen tested for a camera before and they’re offering her the job without even seeing if she can perform on camera. It does set off warning bells in her head but she can’t deny the attractiveness of the offer. The only downside seems to be Ryan himself. He’s overly arrogant and self-assured and far too heavy handed. Unfortunately, he’s also sexy as hell and it doesn’t seem like Ella is immune, despite the many walls she has erected around her heart after several shattering betrayals,

Their first adventure is the Ghan train journey from Adelaide to the Top End and for Ella, that poses even more of a temptation. Ryan Edwards is a notorious womaniser and she knows it would be a mistake to allow herself anything more than just a no strings attached moment. But how can they work together when they want such different things?

I have super mixed feelings on this book – love the idea of it, it sounded like so much fun. Ella is uptight and very dedicated. She drives herself to succeed and she also drives those around her to succeed. Their performances reflect on her and failure is not an option for her. Ella kind of has the bitch “The Devil Wears Prada” thing going on and everyone who works for her seems a bit frightened of her because she is such a perfectionist/slave driver.

Enter Ryan Edwards and all of a sudden it’s like Harlequin Presents meets Bear Grylls in here. I don’t really find it cute that Ryan put her over his shoulder in her office and threatened to expose her ass to her colleagues and workmates if she didn’t agree to have dinner with him. Ryan is overbearing, arrogant, heavyhanded and kind of a bully. I think it’s wrapped up in the fact that he “sees her potential” and wants to get her in his bed but for me it just made him seem like a ginormous douche. I hate people being forced to do things they don’t want to do even if it’s “for their own good”. The way that he manipulates and threatens her into having dinner with me so he can lay out what he wants from her (and bully her into agreeing) was annoying. Why didn’t he just put the proposal to her like a normal person? So I was prepared to find Ryan annoying from then on and he didn’t really disappoint me. And then later on it turns out that Ella is some kind of black belt kickboxing whiz so I don’t know why she didn’t just sit him on his butt or nail him in the nads or something. That seemed kind of like inconsistent character portrayal.

Despite the fact that pains are taken to establish her as an uptight bitch (and I think we’re supposed to think “oh LOL Ryan is so funny because he winds her up but really he sees what she is underneath”) I actually liked Ella’s character. Her background was well fleshed out and I liked the reasoning for her Miranda Priestley-type character which made a lot of sense. I also liked that she wanted to stand alone, to develop her own career and resisted her grandfather’s plans for her. She was dedicated and passionate about her work, tough but with a bit of vulnerability. I also liked the way in which she developed friendships with the female crew while they were filming. You could tell she didn’t really know how to be friends properly and that it was a learning curve for her. She was used to just working with people, not socialising with them and crossing over into friendship.

Because I liked Ella so much, it was sort of a shame that I really didn’t like Ryan’s character at all. And if someone had taken me on a “surprise” back to nature camping trip, I wouldn’t have been as good-natured about it as Ella came to be! This one was definitely a mixed bag – good writing and I liked the story of them travelling on the Ghan and exploring the NT but could definitely not get into Ryan, which tended to bring down my whole opinion on the novel. This is definitely a romance for those who prefer the more Alpha type of hero.

Getting Wild is a fun and fluffy read, but it is also the type of books that is either going to be right up your alley or piss you off. Personally, I fell somewhere in between. This is my third Barrie book - although it is her debut - and I did expect something a little more than what I got. Her other books had the same brilliant and addictive writing style that this did, but her characters, romance and plotlines were much stronger in her latest novels than they were in Getting Wild. I think it’s fair to say this is her weakest work, but is still pretty good for a debut.

What I love about Barrie’s work most of all is a) her writing style - which is somehow both simplistic in a straight-to-the-point sort of way and engaging - and b) her strong female protagonist. Getting Wild’s protagonist, Ella, was fantastic. She was so much more than the typical “cold-hearted ice queen/bitch” that everyone assumed she was. She was ambitious, knew how good she was at her job, and made sure to put herself first, everyone else’s opinions and expectations of her be damned. I admired her perseverance and resilience. I loved that she had drive and talent, but I did think she was a little too easy to dislike at times and her backstory was a little bit too tragic. That being said, I did find that - in the end - this made her a stronger and more well-rounded character. No one is flawless! We did really get inside of her headspace and I left this book wanting more from her character in the best possible way.

The romance - and consequently, Ryan’s character - was pretty solid but still a little… lacking? For one, Ella and Ryan have a love/hate relationship (at first) which - if you didn’t know by now - is not my favourite thing. I think Ryan was a decent character, but we didn’t get to know him as well as Ella, and because we were in Ella’s head and she disliked him so much - at first, of course - it was hard to warm up to him. I never got to the place where I was completely rooting for him. It didn’t help that he said some things that made me cringe or raise my eyebrows. He was a little too possessive at times. I liked that he pushed Ella to open up and embrace herself, but at times he went too far. I am not a fan of the “alpha male” trope because - in my opinion - it’s too much of a precursor to abusive relationships. Ryan did say some things that would have, personally, had me running. He took things a step too far at times, especially towards the end of the book. However, he genuinely cared for Ella and didn’t abuse her at any stage - or I really would have been running. If you like this sort of romance, maybe it’ll be more of your thing.

The plotline, in general, was fun at first because of its obvious Devil Wears Prada influences (which is one of my favourite chicklit movies). The more the story went along, the more I thought the main storyline got predominated by the romance. Seeing as this book is pitched as a romance though, I guess that was to be expected. Would I have enjoyed more journalism and writing? Yes. Did it bother me a whole deal that we didn’t? Not particularly. Just worth noting.

Overall? I thought this was an enjoyable read. The protagonist and addictive quality to the writing were certainly my favourite parts, but the romance was not my favourite. If more time was taken building up Ryan’s character than I do think I could have enjoyed this story more. However, if you love a good contemporary romance (with some great Australian settings!) then I wouldn’t turn you away from this. I still look forward to Barrie’s future books!

A very mediocre book - I am not a genuine romance reader so perhaps I should have passed however I was gifted a three book box set at a Goodreads meetup with this being the middle book. While I did not hate it I was left underwhelmed - plot predictable and sex scenes mediocre. Landscape descriptions were a bit better than the first book in the series (Escape to Kakadu) where they were terrible. So not terrible but overall a bit disappointing. And of course geographical errors which seem to go with this genre when written by writers who don't really know the locations they use as settings (e.g there is no train stop at Katherine Gorge - the train stops in the town of Katherine 3o kms away, and from there you are not next to Mataranka Hot Springs but 13o kms away.)

Title: Getting Wild

Series: N/A

Author: Sarah Barrie

Genre: Romance/Women's Fiction

Blurb: When Ella Jameson steps into a room, people scramble to attention. She's ruthless, terrifying, and untouchable -- and very, very successful as Editor-in-Chief of Australia's top travel magazine.

Then Ryan Edwards, adventure traveller, walks into her office with an unexpected job proposal, and Ella just knows he's going to be trouble. As far as she's concerned, the man's a self-indulgent, kamikaze, adrenaline-junkie with an authority complex -- and he's also infuriatingly sexy! The idea of them working together is ludicrous, but the opportunity to co-host a new travel show is just too good to refuse.

As she is swept from her world of inner-city glamour into a nightmare of camping, crocodiles, and outback adventures, Ella's feelings for Ryan begin to heat up, and her walls start to come down. In the tropical beauty of Australia's Top End, it's not just the weather that's going to sizzle...

Thoughts: Getting Wild is a sweet romantic story with a bit of adventure thrown in. If you're looking for an in-depth, complex storyline, it might not be quite up your alley. The book is far more focused on the characters and their interactions with each other. Is that a problem in this case? For me, it was a resounding 'No'! It worked perfectly when it came to this book. It was all about the characters. And with two such likeable ones, it was a hard book to put down.

Ella seems to have it all - she's a successful business woman, very cool and collected, never lets anything ruffle her feathers. Except for Ryan - from the word go, he gets under her skin and she can't seem to shake him from her thoughts. When it comes to their characters, Ryan is the exact opposite - he's a grab life by the balls, adventure junkie, who goes after what he wants no holds barred. And what he wants is Ella.

The author does a wonderful job making Ella strong, yet vulnerable - not to mention having Ryan say just the right things to win her over, yet still able to hold his own against Ella and come out on top. I just loved the witty banter between these two...it made for some fun reading! The secondary characters were great as well and they weren't just there to be there - they actually contributed to the storyline, and in many cases provided some much needed insight, support, or just comic relief.

This was such a sweet and endearing read, yet so engaging you don't want to put it down. Definitely recommended!

Getting Wild was a fun, fast-paced adventure.

While the idea of an Opposites Attract romance isn't new, the well developed characters and far from ordinary settings of this story made for a refreshing read. A strong female lead, dialogue that can switch between serious, funny and sexy flawlessly, and a swoon-worthy, take-charge BAMF male had me flipping pages like a crazy to see what happened next.

Personally, part of the fun of this book is that its enjoyment didn't end with the final page. After reading Getting Wild, I went on to spend the rest of my afternoon planning an outrageously expensive vacation across Australia, complete with Platinum Suite aboard The Ghan and a trip to an animal park full of crocodiles. Everything Ella and Ryan did I can do too (for the low, low price of $23,000 (donations gladly accepted)). At the very least, this book will have you traveling across Australia via pictures found on Google.

The only thing that kept me from giving this a full 5 stars is that the ending was rather abrupt. While not a cliffhanger, it reads as though there is a sequel or spin-off coming. If there is, awesome - I will be waiting on the edge of my seat for more Ella and Ryan. If there isn't, it leaves this book with a feeling of being incomplete.

Solid Read, would definitely recommend this one to...everyone. Yea, Everyone! So go get it. GO!

3.5 Star Review:
Meet Ella Jameson, little Miss Perfect. She doesn't make mistakes, she never lets her guard down, she has the reputation of a cold-hearted bitch, oh and she's drop dead gorgeous. She meets Ryan Edwards and has definitely met his match in him. He is the egotistical, womanizing, adventurous, bad boy, who can't leave Ella alone.

The two of them find themselves on assignment together for a travel magazine and new travel TV show. As much as Ella tries she can't resist the temptation that is Ryan and as hard as Ryan tries he can't seem to get Ella to relax and trust him, much less fall in love with him.

I loved the banter these two shared, they were constantly going back and forth and at times it was laugh out loud funny. Ella and Ryan are the definition of opposites attract and no matter how hard they fight it they can't seem to stop from falling for one another.

This book was a quick easy read that left me feeling happy.

What a fun read. Ryan and Ella is a romance battle between the ice queen and the sexy adventure traveller. Ella is really hard to like at first until you begin to understand what makes her who she is. One of my favorite parts was when Ella finally had enough of Reece and just went after her like a woman possessed. You gotta love a man like Ryan who can see beyond what Ella shows to the world. This is not my usual reading but I would recommend this for anyone that likes a sweet romance. 3.5 stars....

Getting Wild by Sarah Barrie
Ella Jameson and Ryan Edwards were great characters and the story was great. It's a romance with the adventure of the Australian outback. Ella is a editor in cheif for a travel magazine and Ryan is a adventure traveler. Ella gets swept up into Ryans charms and he is sexy as hell. There is some great banter between the two, and some funny parts as well. Go ahead and give it a try you will like this book.

Got to love a good 'battle of the wits in the wild' story! I loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine, and the fact the hero admits his feelings for her first. Just the right amount of alpha male for me. :)

A great read. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well written, great depth to the characters. The heroine is sassy heroine (Ella), the hero is witty (Ryan) and the book just flows. Nice to read a book with an Aussie theme from an Aussie author too :)

Quick and funny read with larger-than-life characters looming on my e-reader, but hey, that's why fiction exists, isn't it? Took me a while to warm up to the cold and untouchable Ella Jameson alongside the adventurous but loony Ryan but the last quarter of the book really made my day.

I love most of Sarah Barrie’s other books and was super excited to find an earlier one of hers but this is awful and cliched. Couldn’t finish it.

I reviewed this at MustReadBooksOrDie with my friend Shelley!

Shel: This is another great find through Net Galley. Getting Wild is full of fun; it actually kind of reminds me of an Australian version of Kristen Ashley...there's a very sassy Ella and a very smirky, take no shit Ryan...and lots of sparks between the two. Court: Yeah. *Happy sigh* The voice and life of the characters are defined very early, so I just sat back to enjoy the very fun ride through the Australian Outback!

Shel: I loved Ella's strength and her stubbornness and her success and her ability to maintain her composure. She was so fierce and fun to read. She made the perfect protagonist to Ryan's alpha male, fun loving, adventurous spirit. Their fire and ice personalities came together to make some steamy scenes...when they weren't giving each other shit for one reason or another. I loved Ryan's persistence in his pursuit of Ella and I loved Ella's resistance and her begrudging acceptance...they made me smile a lot while reading.

Court: I think for some people Ella could be very off putting. She is everything that Shelley said, but when it says in the blurb "The Devil Wears Prada" meets...it means it. Everything that is ice, ice cold about Ella is hard to enjoy...until we start to find out why. And the ice around her heart...and vagina started to thaw...and the story truly is a lot of fun and shenanigans. Ryan was an amazing character...and crikey...I loved him. (That was too much wasn't it? Australian fail.)

Shel: The one thing I found interesting..not bad or good..just interesting was the shift in the viewpoint about 60% in. The novel was told mostly through Ella's POV but Ryan (and others) would subtly have their voice added to the telling of the story. As I said, it wasn't really distracting, just an interesting choice.

Court: Right. I did notice it. And thought it was random, but luckily it didn't jar the story so much that I didn't know who was speaking...which surprised the heck out of me too! Usually that is not something I like...but certain scenes called for it here.

Shel: I wish the ending could've been a little longer, but overall I was very satisfied with the pace and flow of the novel. Court: RIGHT! We always want more, but a few scenes move pretty fast compared to how the beginning was paced. Again not bad, but we think you'll probably notice it and think "hhhmmm" a little bit. So try not to, because the story, writing and characters are very pleasing and I enjoyed this very much.

Shelley: 4 Stars Courtney: 4 Stars
