Welcome to my corner of Goodreads! I'm Lukas Castillo, the author of "Grappling Klay," a young adult novel that explores the themes of loss and redemption.

As a native of the steel city of Pittsburgh, I've drawn inspiration from my roots to craft a compelling narrative that coincides with the journey of a young kid from that part of the country.

When I'm not immersed in the world of storytelling, I'm an avid reader with an insatiable appetite for literature, ranging from the whimsical escapades of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" to the thought-provoking dystopia of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," and even diving into the raw and real world of autobiographies like "Titan" and "Snowball."

Beyond my passion for writing and reading, I have a deep love for sports, both playing and watching. Most of my cherished moments are spent with my wonderful family, engaging in activities that celebrate the amazing benefits of life together.

"Grappling Klay" is more than just a story for me; it's an expression of one of the most vulnerable states I've ever experienced. It's a tale of redemption when the world seems to spiral out of control, a beacon of hope for young readers who may feel that hope is elusive.

What sets "Grappling Klay" apart is the perspective it offers. It comes from the heart of someone who believes in the power of resilience, even in the face of profound mental struggles. Mental health is a hurdle in the human condition, and for some, it looms larger than others. For Klay Atwater, the protagonist of my book, it could be the driving force that propels him to heights never before imagined.

I invite you to explore the pages of "Grappling Klay" and embark on a journey of self-discovery, redemption, and the unyielding belief that even in our darkest moments, we can find the strength to rise.

Thank you for joining me on this literary adventure, and I look forward to connecting with fellow book lovers and readers here on Goodreads. Happy reading!

Epic!

This is a great book that is based on an age-old tale. It’s written in simple language that is accessible to young readers, and is told in a way that really draws young readers in. I love the lessons that legendary stories like this one contain, so kudos to the author for retelling it for children! My son and I really enjoyed it. I especially loved the epilogue where the author beautifully sums up the messages and lessons in this story. Great book!

Great Idea Well Executed

When I was in high school gifted English class, we read excerpts of The Epic of Gilgamesh. I think it is great for younger kids--age 10 or 11 to get some cultural literacy by learning of the story in a more age appropriate way. This was a well done summation of the much longer tale.

Well written

This was a very child-appropriate version of Gilgamesh, written in language suitable for today’s children. The illustrations were exciting, like a comic book. My kids enjoyed it.
