4 🌟🌟🌟🌟- What Happened at High School Graduation
Twenty eight year old Ned Anderson is bored and frustrated working at his dead end job at a Recruitment Agency in the sweltering heat that is Phoenix Arizona. As usual his work day starts with scrolling listlessly through the daily deluge of emails from companies looking for new staff and reading through the Resumes of possible recruits. He nearly falls from his office chair in shock when he sees an email from an old High School Chat Group informing him of the upcoming 10 year High School Reunion. Of course he has no intention of attending because it is in Sweden, but he can’t help it when the email takes him back to the memories of that year he spent on his Aunt Violet’s Dairy farm set at the foot of the forested hills in a tiny hamlet.
Ned’s parents are both Swedish but settled in Arizona years ago but still fly the Swedish Flag. He has duel citizenship and passports. They always spoke Swedish at home with Ned so he was raised with both languages. With one year left in High School he has no idea what he wants to do in life. When one of his friends accidentally mentions to their parents that Ned is gay, it spreads throughout his school and his friends drop him like he was hot coals. His life becomes unbearable so his parents organise an Exchange Student Year for him to finish High School and Graduate.
That year was one of the best years Ned can remember, the freedom of being out and accepted, the beautiful forests and the smell of the trees was bliss compared to the heat and red dirt of Phoenix, Arizona. Plus he liked life on the farm with his aunt, despite the muck and manure smells and the mosquito bites.
He’d spent that year crushing on the quiet, tall farm boy Teddy Backman who lived with his father on their nearby farm where they owned and managed the foresting of trees. He never had the courage to speak to Teddy, despite the fact he was a motormouth among his other classmates. He’d walk behind him along the road home from school without a word.
The night of their Graduation he did exactly that but he caught up with Ted and walked him home. Ted invites him in to lend him a hoodie as protection from the mozzies on the way home but as soon as they get indoors Ted has Ned in his arms against the wall and kissing him. They end up crossing the line big time and was firsts all round for both of them Ned walks home later and the next morning he’s on his flight back to Phoenix. Ten years later Ned is now a very different young man as he reads that email from Sweden. He’s unhappy in Phoenix and feels bad when he’s remembers what happened on Graduation Night.
Life on the Forestry Farm in Sweden continued as usual for Ted over the next 10 years he concentrated on working until his Dad became too ill with cancer. His Dad wrote many letters to Ted to read when he passed and towards the end he and a cousin did the Swedish Death Cleaning, whereby they remove every unnecessary item in the home to relieve the burden on their loved ones left behind. This had a huge impact on Ted, all he had was his own single bed and a kitchen table and chairs and a refrigerator. Flora is his best friend since 4th grade, she farms nearby with her elderly parents. She also carries a huge crush on Ted, she knows it is useless, Ted has told her he is gay, but he loves her as his best friend. They continue to help each other out when needed.
Flora manages to cajole Ted into being her escort at the Graduation, she wanted to get dressed up, have a few drinks and dance. Which she does leaving Ted on his own when he comes face to face with Ned, from Arizona. They chat briefly. When Flora returns she is quite drunk and Ted decides to call a cab and get her home. He sends her off and starts walking back to the farm only to discover that Ned is doing what he’s always done, walked behind him all the way home.
Let’s just say that events from Graduation night is repeated and both are happy about it. But when Ted asks Ned not to wake him when he leaves, don’t leave his number, don’t leave a note, and what they did means nothing, just go, Ned is hurt. But he can’t resist scribbling three words for Ted before he goes, “Wait for Me”.

I just love Sophia Soames writing style, not too angsty, full of emotion that hits right where it hurts then makes you feel so good afterwards. Here, she even managed to make me feel the bitter cold of Winter in the hills of Sweden. It’s always a great read for me and I am more than half way through her library of work. Her MC’s always find a way into my heart and Ned was the first to do so here, despite not being as large a man as Ted, he was the one who did all the caring and comforting when Ted eventually let go of all the events of the past and managed to do his grieving for his parents.
Second Winter can be read in a day and deserves a place on your TBR list, you won’t regret it.

When I began reading this book I thought, “Haven’t I read this before?” Sweden, American transplant, local farmer, lots of trees? I have and I haven’t! The narrative is similar to a Roe Horvat that I read some weeks ago, but it is definitely a different book even with the similarities.
I like the rural Swedish setting. I’m glad that both authors had the local MC a serious, but kind person. I don’t think that I could deal with a sparkly Swedish twink. I’ve watched too much Ingmar Bergman!
Here we have Swedish-American transplant, Ned, returning to small town Sweden and his aunt’s dairy farm. He is also going back to the place where his senior year crush and first lover, Teddy, lives. I like that they are both Edwards, very clever.
Two nice men falling in love again after an abrupt and heart aching parting. They have to work through some feelings about that, but I don’t think they ever fell out of love.
There is a sad subplot of Teddy being alone in his family farmhouse after the lingering death of his father. The father has left first person letters for Teddy to read after he is gone. The letters are interspersed throughout the book. Teddy is truly suffering with grief. Ned knows this and is gently firm with Teddy, assuring him of his love and helping him when the time is right to take some steps forward. Their home life between the two houses was warm and comforting. And, there were cats!
The writing is very good in the book with all the scenes of the seasons passing in farm life and the changes for both men as they hold tight to each other.
A good read!

W sumie to jestem trochę rozczarowana 🫤
Po blurbie i komentarzach spodziewałam się delikatnej, lirycznej historii, innej trochę od reszty ze względu na skandynawskie pochodzenie autorki.
I nie mogę jej odmówić tego, że wie, jak posługiwać się słowem. Przy listach ojca Teddego trochę ściskało mnie w gardle. Samotność, żałoba, wegetacja nie życie, bieganie w kółko jak chomik na kołowrotku bez pomysłu jak się z tego wydostać - to jest naprawdę dobrze opisane.
Ale już bohaterowie, ich związek, rozmowy, bohaterowie drugoplanowi są w większości... dziwni. Bo to chyba odpowiednie słowo. Czasami wybałuszałam oczy na pewne rzeczy - skąd to się wzięło? I nie mogę do końca się zdecydować, czy ta dziwność była dobra, czy zła. Książka nie była jednak na tyle dobra, żebym łamała sobie nad tym głowę - i, pomimo tego, że ocena będzie odbiegać od większości, daję 2+ bez zaokrąglenia w górę, bo jednak szala minimalnie przeważa na dziwność nienajlepszą... Historii nie zapamiętam i że tak powiem obrazowo, zostawia mi po sobie dziwny posmak, który trudno zidentyfikować, ale który mi zbyt dobrze nie siadł...

Ned isn’t happy, just tired, tired of life, his job, just everything. Living in Phoenix is enormously different than Sweden. It’s been ten years since he left. And here he is with a Swedish school reunion invitation in his hand. He should throw it away.
Teddy is a Landowner, a Swedish farmer, a lonely man, living in an empty house by himself, the house where his dad passed away. Teddy sits with the same invitation in his hand, he should burn it.
Ned and Teddy had something together, it goes deep, even you’d think, as an outsider, it’s just a one-time thing.
No way, it was so much more.
After the reunion Ned returning to the States, you wanna know his next step…?
He packed his belongings, called his aunt, and returned to stay.
‘Home’
It was an extraordinary experience the way they (finally) came together.
Two lonely beautiful souls, who got their shot to a warm and loving forever, my heart they were precious!
“He wasn’t a naturally cheerful man. More…careful, restrained. Grumpy? Nah. He was cute. Shy Teddy. Mine.”
“I need you to help me reclaim this place,” Utterly precious!
These two, my heart be still, they deserved the world and certainly each other!!
This was such a delicate intimate narrative, the reconnection, the grief, the struggle, the environments, the friends and family, and the tons of details, memories, and all the utterly precious moments we can enjoy made this a more than beautiful story.

Another sweet romance from Sophia Soames.
It's a low angst and emotional love story of second and third chances with a bit of heartbreak and grieving.
Teddy is a Swedish 18 years old boy who's starting his senior year of high school when an American exchange student arrives. Ned's family is Swedish and he goes to live with his aunt for a year.
Teddy is captivated by the fact that Ned is obviously out and he's a little bit intimidated too. They have a massive crush on each other without knowing it. The night of the graduation party, Ned follows Teddy home and they have sex (first time with both of them). The next day, Ned goes back to the States and they haven't had any kind of contact for ten years.
All this part about the past is not described in all the details, there are only comments made by the MCs that let us know that that night was very important for both of them and that they haven't forgotten but still think about each other from time to time.
That night repeats itself at the High School Reunion, when Ned comes back for a weekend: both Teddy and Ned confess to liking each other and they have sex but, again, the next day Ned leaves.
Despite still having feelings, in fact, they're not able to take that step further towards each other.
This time, though, the separation is very tough for both of them: everything gets more difficult and they both have trouble focusing on their jobs. Until Ned quits it and moves back to Sweden.
I adored this part: they're so sweetly in love that they go from almost totally strangers to boyfriends who spend every night together, they cuddle and hug and kiss like they're starving for each other's affection.
It's not an easy relationship, though, because they still have a lot of insecurities: Ned doesn't know how to be good at running a dairy farm and thinks he has nothing to offer to Teddy. Teddy, on the other hand, is terrified Ned will lose interest and leave again. Moreover, he's still dealing with the aftermath of his father's death, because of the grief and doubts about his home and farm.
The scene at the supermarket was so beautifully written and I loved how they hold on onto each other to seek comfort.
The sex scenes are sweet, emotional and full of feelings. There aren't many of them, but I think that fits perfectly well with their love dynamic.
What prevented me from giving five full stars:
I get that Ned's move into Teddy's life was difficult for Flora, but Teddy never promised her anything beyond friendship: she had known for years that Teddy was gay and I think that she was a little too dramatic and that she put a lot of unnecessary stress on Teddy, who was he one who had to find time for his best friend too (on top of taking care of everything else).
I also found her opinions about Teddy and Ned's intercourse a little too judgmental: I understand that she was worried but she was so adamant that something was wrong that she pushed Teddy to reveal intimate details that should have remained private. Honestly I was not very fond of her.
I can't wait to read the author's next book: I love her writing style and her books are always like a comforting hug for me.

I loved this second-chance story!
Teddy and Ned are perfect together.
Teddy—beautiful, broken, and sweet Teddy. And Ned, so strong when Teddy is not. After more than ten years apart, they meet again at a school reunion.
The sense of humor, the side characters, and the vivid descriptions were fantastic. Most of all, I adored the letters—so touching.
A story of ordinary life, hard choices, and enduring love.
A great read from Sophia Soames. I look forward to more from her.

None at all, one would think. Well, Sophia Soames begs to differ. Because once again, this author manages to create two messy, clueless characters with pasts, questions, doubts, insecurities, weaknesses, and therefore three-dimensional substance, throws them into this unsolvable dilemma… and finds a way out for them exactly because they are both so messy. Soames has a knack of offering us loveable guys, meant for each other for anyone with eyes to see, but separated by circumstances. And somehow, they discover in themselves, in their interior mess, the answers to their questions and the strength to overcome said circumstances and find happiness. Soames’s stories, and this one is no exception, are tales of young men struggling with their becoming adults or coping with life (yep, I confirm, it’s damn hard). What keeps them afloat, what saves them ultimately is the realization that one and one is more than just two. Love isn’t arithmetic, it’s so much more.
What made this novel stand out for me was the setting. Yes, I’ve already read (and loved) Soames books that take place in Sweden (namely collaborations with Magdalena di Sotru, ‘Life is Good and Other Lies’ as well as ‘Life is Right Here’), but in this one, it’s almost a fantasy Sweden (with mosquitoes as an unwelcome extra) through the seasons. I’ve only visited Stockholm, but believe me—the short trip from the airport to the center felt as if I were crossing those dense fairy tale forests one imagines and which are so present in this novel. For an old romantic like me, seeing two soulmates evolve in this romantic setting and letting romance into their lives was a real treat. Which is why I wholeheartedly recommend this read.

This book is a mix of Swedish melancholy, 2 lonely men finding each other (again) and still funny moments. It is sweet and still deals with some serious issues, like the death of a parent, struggles with being true to yourself and having enough courage to follow your heart and your true way in life.
It is the most beautiful love story I've read in a long, long time. I can't say enough good things about this book. I loved the story, the characters and the depth of the story!

This is a fairly new to me author and I am glad that I took a chance. This book is well written and easy to read. This is the story of Ned Anderson and Teddy Backman. The two originally met when Ned came to stay on his Aunt Violet’s Dairy farm in Sweden. Teddy is a local and has never left the area. His father has recently passes and now Teddy is running their tree farm alone. He is still mired in his grief over his father's passing. Ned is doing a job that he hates in a climate that he can't stand. When he is fired, Ned takes it as a sign that he is to move on and do something else. Then they both get a 10 year anniversary reunion invite. Originally, they both said no. But not that Ned has nothing holding him in Arizona, off he goes. And Teddy is drawn into it by his best friend and neighbor Flora. When they meet, they are not the young teenagers of their youth. Both have grown and changed quite a bit. This is their story. I enjoyed this book. It is low angst and a romantic story. I really liked how Ned decided what had to happen to help Teddy and then just did it. Sometimes when we are stuck in our grief, we need the unexpected to kick start us on a new path. I enjoyed this book.

I instantly fell in love with this story, and Teddy and Ned gave me all the feels! Gentle Teddy is so lost following the death of his father, yet he somehow manages to keep putting one foot in front of the other. His best friend, Flora, is his stalwart support who never stopped loving him, even though it’s never going to be what she wants. One-time exchange student Ned isn’t doing much better. He’s in a dead end job about as far from Sweden as it gets. Bleak, yeah, until the brilliant Sophia Soames lobs in the catalyst that changes everything.
The remarkable thing about Sophia’s books is how she manages to make the most extraordinary things utterly extraordinary. Her characters are so beautifully rendered, so utterly real, that you begin to feel you must have met them in some other life. The plot unfolds in such an organic manner that the reader is drawn into a wonderfully messy world that seems like the most natural life possible. I devoured this story and finished feeling like I couldn’t wait for the next snowfall. ❄️

Ned is a student from the USA who comes to Sweden to finish high school. Both Ned and Teddy were attracted to each other from the moment they see each other but it isn’t until Ned is about to return home that their attraction turns physical just one time.
Ten years later, a high school reunion is organised and Ned returns to the small Swedish town because he never forgot Teddy. The spark is still there for both of them and it reignites something that they can no longer ignore.
This book was very sweet and worth the read. It’s low angst but did deal with the loss of a parent. Both MMCs had a lot to work through together and they end up bringing each other back to life. I’m kind of exhausted for both of them with how hard they worked on their respective farms.
There were also some great secondary characters. Ned’s aunty and Teddy’s BFF, bless these strong women who aren’t afraid to tell them how it is.

Something I LOVE about Sophia Soames writing is that her stories go long past the first little bit of the couple meeting and getting together. The people are also the most simple, real folks as well. This story did not disappoint.
Ned and Teddy were two opposite MMCs that you couldn't help but love and adore. Sophia put her sense of humor along with giving the characters real-life stories with a lot of emotion and depth. I also loved the contrast of the American in Sweden. That was extra fun to read.
And those * cats! That was so much fun!

I fell in love with Ned the moment he took control and stood his ground with Teddy.
I enjoyed going through their journey of figuring life out together. We all have those ups and downs in our lives and try to work through them. I loved that Ned grounded Teddy and gave him the comfort and support he needed. The side characters, Violet and Flora, just add that much more to the story. This is just an amazing story. It will give you all the feels and then some. I highly recommend you read it

Reread as audiobook. The first time I've heard this narrator, and I hope to hear a lot more, it was particularly well done.
Story - 4.25 stars. This didn't feel the same as the other books I have read by this author, but it was still really good. The grief Teddy struggled with was sympathetically written, and the shock of the Swedish death clean was understandably traumatising. It was really sweet that Ned figured himself out in time to help Teddy, especially as they had barely connected during school. The scenery and other characters were lovely.

The only way I can think of describing what Sophia Soames books are to me is “poetic”. The setting in Northern Sweden, though far from idyllic (with the cold, the rain, the muck and so on) sort of sets the story in a suspended time and makes every mundane interaction significant and poignant. Ned and Teddy are the definition of “meant to be”. Ten years and half a word of distance could not keep the two of them apart, and though their reunion is far from seamless, the way they join their lives together is a thing of beauty!

The biggest mistake of my life had been coming here in the first place. The second biggest had been leaving. Maybe. What did I know?
Ned pasó un año de preparatoria en Suecia, y en su última noche en el país, finalmente hizo algo respecto a su crush por Teddy. Ahora han pasado 10 años y esa noche de pasión debería estar olvidada. Pero cuando se vuelven a encontrar en la reunión escolar, ambos se dan cuenta que en realidad esa noche fue el preámbulo de algo mayor, si están dispuestos a darse una oportunidad.
Teddy está resignado a vivir la vida rutinaria que implica tener una plantación de árboles navideños. Conoce bien el negocio, pero aún está en pleno duelo por la muerte de su padre y no sabe si realmente es lo que quiere hacer por el resto de su vida, o si debería desear algo más. Ned tiene una vida de oficinista de lo más aburrida, pero recibir una invitación para la reunión escolar le hace sentir una chispa que no sabía que aún seguía prendida. ¿Debe aprovechar la oportunidad para regresar a Suecia y descubrir si el año más feliz de su pasado fue solo un espejismo o si puede plantar los cimientos para un nuevo futuro?
La premisa puede resultar simple, y la trama predecible, pero me gustó mucho el desarrollo. El inicio es un poco accidentado, pero una vez que Teddy y Ned deciden que quieren intentar una relación, todo empieza a fluir de forma muy realista. No hay un clímax per sé, solo la conclusión de que estas dos personas son más felices juntas y tienen un largo futuro por delante para crecer y amar. Y eso es tan satisfactorio. No hay drama innecesario (especialmente agradezco que no haya la típica ruptura casi al final, que es tan común con tantas autoras), solo los típicos baches de una relación que está empezando como las inseguridades de ambos, que conocemos íntimamente gracias a que se intercalan los puntos de vista.
Solo con leer la sinopsis supe que TENÍA que leer este libro, porque posee uno de los tropes que me fascinan: SEGUNDA OPORTUNIDAD. Y tan solo empezarlo, encontré uno de los estilos que se me hacen irresistibles: Las emociones fluyen en cada página. Y un tercer detalle que me encanta: la vida rural. Así que está más que claro que pasa a mi lista de Favoritos atemporales, que seguramente releeré cuando necesite algo reconfortante.
God’s Own Country es de mis películas favoritas, y este libro me proporcionó la misma sensación realista. Con su gran complejidad de emociones, el retrato de la vida en un pueblo pequeño y cómo se puede ser feliz a pesar que las tareas rutinarias del día a día te absorban casi por completo. Si has visto esa película y te gusta, definitivamente te encantará este libro. Y si no la has visto, definitivamente la recomiendo.

I always expect to enjoy the books Sophia Soames gifts us with, and this one was not an exception. I loved it from the first words to the last period mark.
There are many contradictions in the book that are written so flawlessly – the simplicity of the farmer’s life (not in the sense of work though) and the complexity of personal life filled with angsty longings, feelings of abandonment, loneliness, future without love and family, all of those making you deeply sad for the characters in this story
The Winter brings the blues to Teddy’s and Ned’s life, after the steamy but oh-so-brief encounter in the Summer. Two men who grew up as star-struck teenagers, separated by life circumstances, were brought together by unexplained need to be each other’s everything.
Ned is not happy in the sunny, dusty office in Arizona, he feels adrift, not tethered to Earth because he can’t be with one person who means so much to him. He can’t find the respite of just having to go to work, then drive to the home that is empty and live the life that passes him by. He needs to breathe; he needs to return to the place that will make him whole again. And he needs to make this crazy move across the ocean to win his future happiness with one man he can’t get out of his mind.
Teddy is drowning in grief, overwhelmed by running the farm he inherited, broken by the loss, and filling his empty life and home with cats and anxiety. Thank God for Flora, his trusty friend, who also is the girl who has loved him since forever, for her determination for him not to get hurt or lost in the wilderness surrounding them.
I cried when Teddy read his late Dad’s letters, I was angry at both Teddy and Ned for being idiots who can’t express what they feel and want, I was frustrated they were adamant to grab that opportunity for so long, for the chance to be happy and love each other, and live the best damn future possible.
The description of the county, the beauty of surroundings that are so precious to people that live there, the things that sometimes people take for granted, not appreciating how generous nature is just superb.
This book is a perfect way to get you inserted into this life. It’s romantic and soft, and mushy and angsty at times, there’s Kitten and Babe, and they are big and manly, and charming, funny and sometimes tongue-tied, but so lovable in their stumbling ways around what they want the most, and then becoming brave enough to give it a go. They win their happily after and they will fill you with warm and fuzzy feelings to the brim.
I wish you could understand how wonderful is the world that Sophia had created. I would really encourage you to read this story. The ways Sophia writes are so flowing, so easy to read, just uninterrupted pleasure of sinking into her words. Perfection!
There are many contradictions in the book that are written so flawlessly – the simplicity of the farmer’s life (not in the sense of work though) and the complexity of personal life filled with angsty longings, feelings of abandonment, loneliness, future without love and family, all of those making you deeply sad for the characters in this story
The Winter brings the blues to Teddy’s and Ned’s life, after the steamy but oh-so-brief encounter in the Summer. Two men who grew up as star-struck teenagers, separated by life circumstances, were brought together by unexplained need to be each other’s everything.
Ned is not happy in the sunny, dusty office in Arizona, he feels adrift, not tethered to Earth because he can’t be with one person who means so much to him. He can’t find the respite of just having to go to work, then drive to the home that is empty and live the life that passes him by. He needs to breathe; he needs to return to the place that will make him whole again. And he needs to make this crazy move across the ocean to win his future happiness with one man he can’t get out of his mind.
Teddy is drowning in grief, overwhelmed by running the farm he inherited, broken by the loss, and filling his empty life and home with cats and anxiety. Thank God for Flora, his trusty friend, who also is the girl who has loved him since forever, for her determination for him not to get hurt or lost in the wilderness surrounding them.
I cried when Teddy read his late Dad’s letters, I was angry at both Teddy and Ned for being idiots who can’t express what they feel and want, I was frustrated they were adamant to grab that opportunity for so long, for the chance to be happy and love each other, and live the best damn future possible.
The description of the county, the beauty of surroundings that are so precious to people that live there, the things that sometimes people take for granted, not appreciating how generous nature is just superb.
This book is a perfect way to get you inserted into this life. It’s romantic and soft, and mushy and angsty at times, there’s Kitten and Babe, and they are big and manly, and charming, funny and sometimes tongue-tied, but so lovable in their stumbling ways around what they want the most, and then becoming brave enough to give it a go. They win their happily after and they will fill you with warm and fuzzy feelings to the brim.

Second Winter is a beautiful story about first love, second chances, and finding home.
In high school shy Teddy was captivated by out, popular American exchange studded Ned Anderson. Ten years later he’s grieving the death of his father, lost in the routine of running the family farm, and battling to keep loneliness at bay. Reunions aren’t his thing, but his best friend Flora convinces him to be her wingman. And there’s a chance Ned might be there.
Ned returning for a ten-year reunion proved he wasn’t over Teddy Backman. Another stolen night before returning to the US has him feeling unmoored.
Taking up his Aunt Violet’s offer to work on her dairy farm, he has his grand gesture, moving halfway around the world to be closer to Teddy and see if they have a chance.
Attraction tinged with regret isn’t easy. Ned needs to learn to communicate better. And Teddy needs to let go of his grief and to stop adopting so many cats…
When they finally realize they don’t have to pretend everything is fine and it’s ok to show vulnerability, it’s a turning point in their relationship. Communication is key. And the love they have is so beautiful.
I really enjoyed this story. It’s quiet, and feels so real. Two men in love figuring out how to be a couple. The descriptions of their lives are so authentic and relatable.

You’ll feel for Flora, who’s been I love with Teddy since they were children. Even though she knew marriage wasn’t in the cards for them, seeing him with someone else hurt. I was glad they were able to talk and repair the rift that caused because they needed each other. Their love might not have been romantic, but it was deep. And Ned’s determination to get Flora coupled up was endearing.
Plus there’s nothing so satisfying as a bully being called on his bs, and seeing what a coward they really are. Take that, Pete, you sanctimonious pr*ck!
A transplanted Swedish cowboy, a gentle, introverted farmer, and a dreamy HEA a decade in the making. Lovely!

Lovely second chance romance (an audio review)
This is my first romance by Sophia Soames and I have to say I’m so glad I snagged it. The story itself is pretty straightforward. Ten years ago, in high school, American Ned had an encounter with Swede Teddy during their senior year. Ned went back to America and nothing more was ever said.
Until the tenth anniversary invitation arrives.
Ned, who’s spinning his wheels in a job he doesn’t enjoy in an industry he struggles with, heads to Sweden. The reunion is a little rocky and Ned heads back to America. Except his heart is in Sweden and he happens to have an aunt who could use his help. What does a man who used to staff call centers know about heifers? Not much…but he’s willing to learn.
Teddy is not thrilled that his high school crush is back yet again. He’s dealing with his own issues. His family’s Christmas tree farm had to diversify years ago and so he’s got students and employees tromping everywhere. To top that off, he’s dealing with the grief of having lost his beloved father a year ago – a pain so raw that it overwhelms at times. Also, his father took the Swedish decluttering before death rule a little too seriously and Teddy’s now dealing with the fallout of that. A reminder every day of his loss. Finally, his best friend is not thrilled that the American who broke his heart is back for another go round.
In some ways, this is a very simple story. Second chances can be that way. Layering in the complexity of an early midlife crisis and profound grief gave the book some lovely depth. I enjoyed the story greatly and will definitely pick up more books by this author.
I will also say that Jaxon Jensen did a wonderful job narrating and he is also someone I won’t hesitate to listen to again in the future.

Ten years later and Ned still regrets leaving Sweden after being an exchange student for a year, one particular encounter with Teddy and thoughts of a missed life haunt him. Dragged to his high school reunion, Teddy is surprised to see Ned again, and also filled with regret over the man that now lives halfway across the world. There is something so relatable about Ned and Teddy’s feelings of living day to day without happiness or joy and how loneliness and routine can beat you down.
The fact that Ned has the courage to try and grab onto something that once made him happy and perhaps strive to create a relationship with Teddy after feeling such a strong connection is admirable and swoony. I really enjoyed Ned and Teddy’s commitment to being partners, working on supporting each other, letting themselves be vulnerable with each other. Ned and Teddy live hard lives and the moments they carve out to be close and intimate become so important, as well as their maturing together and agreeing to communicate throughout. Soames’ writing always feels emotional, realistic and when the main characters are on page together somehow dream-like, another fantastic read. 4.5 rounded up

I loved this one. I always look forward to anything from the pen of Sophia Soames and this one did not disappoint. The writing style and diction immediately take you to Sweden and I was reading the book with an accent in my mind. Ted and Ned are characters that you immediately fall in love with and I was rooting for them both from the very first word; if anyone deserved a second chance it was this pair. Yes, we had grief but it is dealt with in such a sensitive way, a way that we readers can completely understand. Let me tell you that when Sophia told us there were cats, she wasn’t joking. There are so many cats and they play a starring role. I had never heard of Swedish Death Cleaning but can see how it works; we all wonder who is going to have to sort out all of our accumulated belongings after we die and I am now determined to have a ‘bit of a clear out’. All I really previously knew about Sweden was Volvo cars and Abba so I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a bit about rural Swedish farmers lives. All in all, another sensitively written triumph from Sophia Soames and I can heartily recommend it.
