Three dresses- one to wash, one to wear, and one spare. Wanda was given three from the local church and takes them on a family trip to the seaside on a holiday from the Mission. This book is a story of Wanda’s childhood experience. . Three dresses is a heartwarming true story accompanied by Wanda’s paintings. It’s a story celebrating family, connection to place and finding joy in the simple things. This is a beautiful, special book, and a recommended read.
The girly pop in me loves this story, it reads like a slice of life of a little girl and her family - but also tackles historical injustices and the lived experiences of First Nations people stolen and from missions. Illustrations are incredible.
Though it did not make it to the shortlist of the Book Week 2025 Picture Book of the Year, it is the best picture book I've read this year.
Loved how we learned so much through this seemingly simple childhood tale. Engaging writing and leaves me with questions and wanting to know more about Wanda. Also leaves me questioning my own life… like why do we pack soooooo much to go on holiday???
