Secrets of a Duke's Heart (Wayward Dukes' Alliance): A Cavalier Cove Novella

Rate this book
Cavalier Cove, Cornwall, 1816

Miss Clarissa Penfirth is not the sort of lady who attracts attention - positive or negative. The consummate wallflower blends into every situation. She has spent the past eight years observing the ladies of her acquaintance enter into marriage and find themselves trapped in miserable matches. She is content to be on the shelf, even if she is forced to economize by residing indefinitely with her cousin, a viscount in Cavalier Cove.

Then she encounters Mr. Jude Montague, a man with more secrets than one of Clarissa's beloved books. The closer she gets to the truth of his heart, the more her opinions on matrimony begin to change.

Until the truth that Mr. Montague is a duke comes out. Was the man she let down her guard for only leading her on?

If you enjoy lighthearted, steamy Regency novellas with attack geese, witty banter, and a happy ever after, you’ll love Secrets of a Duke's Heart. This story is set in the Cavalier Cove world.

An amazing addition to the Cavalier Cove series and the Wayward Duke's Alliance

Clarissa is on the shelf or so she thinks until a Duke who is pretending to be a mister storms into her cousin's house and changes her view on not only love but the thought of marriage..

Jude thought he would only marry for duty until he meets an intelligent stubborn independent spinster who isn't willing to give into his charms as most women are..

This story is incredible from the beginning of the story to the end..

I honestly can say I couldn't put it down once I started it.

I can't wait to read Nathaniels story..

I received this book from the author as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no else.

Cavalier Cove, Cornwall, 1816 & Miss Clarissa Penfirth the quintessential wallflower is staying with her cousin Nathaniel where she meets "Mr." Jude Montague, a man with more secrets than pages in one of her beloved novels. His sharp wit and roguish charm pique her curiosity, but when she discovers that Mr. Montague is no ordinary gentleman, Clarissa is left reeling.
A delightful novella, which I read in a sitting. I loved the feisty Clarissa & the charming Jude, the chemistry between them sizzled but then secrets threatened to part them. There’s also the mystery surrounding Jude’s missing ward Harriet, who’s story is told in another book in the series. The pace is good & the characters have depth. There’s mystery, hidden identities, secrets, humour, action & steam – a lot to pack into a novella & the author blends them altogether perfectly
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

This is such a great historical romance story. To me it has almost a Pride and Prejudice feeling between the characters. The fact that he is a Duke in secret while having her help him find his niece and both having preconceived notions of each other. I loved watching how they went from not liking each other to where they ended up. The ending was perfect and what they both deserve. I also loved seeing how they both approached the niece's situation. Overall a great historical romance with mystery and adventure rolled into it.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this novella and this is my freely given opinion.

This is a fun, short grumpy-sunshine, hidden identity historical romance. Clarissa Penrith is a wallflower spinster hiding away at her cousin's estate so as not to have her spinster status taint the prospects of her family. She is content enough not being trapped into an unhappy marriage, having observed her share of the state in others. She is generally a very observant lady and despite being a so-called wallflower, tends to speak to her observations when she feels the need.

So when a Mr. Jude Montague intrudes on her cousin, seeking his help, Clarissa takes charge, to Montagues' chagrin. His niece has apparently been kidnapped, while he was escorting her to the bridegroom that he had arranged for her, and Montague is frantic to get her back. Initially he resents Clarissas' intrusion into his private ordeal, as well as a quite sudden and inconvenient attraction to her. But soon he finds himself appreciating her intelligence and observations. What starts as annoyance quickly grows into a desire to not only bed Clarissa, but to wed her. Except he has been hiding many things from Clarissa, not the least of which is his real identity, which is that of the Duke of Montague, and when Clarissa discovers this, she finds it to be a barrier to further exploring their attraction and any future with the man.

A spicy historical romance with two prickly, strong, stubborn personalities who are reluctantly attracted to each other. Despite his arrogant armour though, Montague is deep and soft inside a thick shell, and you know this by the history that is given about his relationship with his niece and as she finds out some of these details, this softens Clarissa's initial impression of him. Montague falls fast and when he is willing to admit to falling in love, the mighty duke falls hard, crashing like a mighty oak. For some reason, there are rather intimidating geese as well - and considering how aggressive Canadian geese have been in my (and my dogs) encounters with them, the geese in this story do give me pause!

4.25 stars out of 5

Carrie Lomax strikes again with "Secrets of a Duke's Heart (Wayward Dukes' Alliance): A Cavalier Cove Novella," a dazzling addition to her beloved series. This time, we're swept away to the rugged charm of Cavalier Cove, Cornwall, where Miss Clarissa Penfirth, firmly planted on the shelf, delightfully sassy, and proudly independent, she has sworn off marriage after a romantic fiasco. But fate, as always, has other plans.

Enter Mr. Jude Montague, a man on a mission with a secret as grand as his title, because, surprise, he's actually a duke in disguise. When his quest to rescue his kidnapped niece collides with Clarissa's sharp wit and sharper resolve, sparks fly off the pages. Jude may carry the trademark duke demeanor—authoritative, commanding, convinced he knows best, but he’s no match for Clarissa’s spirited defiance. He falls hard, and watching him tumble is half the fun.

Their chemistry? Steamy enough to fog up Cornwall’s craggy cliffs. But Clarissa’s no naive debutante; she’s been burned before, which makes her wary of Jude's hidden truths. Lomax masterfully navigates their push-pull dynamic, weaving intrigue, action, hidden identities, heartfelt insecurities, and laugh-out-loud moments into a rich tapestry, all within the compact, satisfying bounds of this novella.

And let’s not forget the author herself, Carrie Lomax is a maestro of historical romance, expertly blending passion, wit, and heart into stories that linger long after the last page. "Secrets of a Duke's Heart" is no exception. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and you’ll be cheering for Clarissa and Jude every twist of the way. Who could ask for anything more?

I so enjoyed Carrie Lomax’s cross-over book Secrets of a Duke’s Heart. This book fits perfectly between the multi-author Wayward Dukes’ Alliance series and her own Cavalier Cove series. Although Clarissa and Jude’s story picks up during Carrie’s previous book in the series, she ties the two stories together so if you haven’t read Stolen by a Pirate you won’t be completely lost. But I suggest you read that book too, as it is fantastic!

Miss Clarissa Penfirth is content to live with her cousin, Viscount Nathaniel Prescott, since she is a confirmed, on-the-shelf spinster, who watched her friends encounter unhappy marriages. She would rather read about improving soil drainage than think about weddings.

Until she meets Mr. Jude Montague. Well, he’s actually the Duke of Montague, hiding as a mister while trying to rescue his niece from her pirate. Jude is afraid to tell Clarissa he is a duke – he wants to know she is not marrying him for his title. They are attracted from the start, and their chemistry is fantastic! Throw in Jude’s secrets and you are bound to have problems.

If you are looking for a quick, light-hearted, spicy read with hidden identities, intrigue, action, humor, witty banter, amazing secondary characters, and some angst this is the book for you! Clarissa and Jude’s story is well-written, it draws you in from the start with its quick pace and keeps hold of you until the end. I do hope Nathaniel gets his own story with Miss Shaw!

A thank you to Carrie Lomax for an Advanced Reader Copy. I happily and voluntarily read the book; all thoughts and comments are my own.

A match hidden in Cornwall.

5 star review of this lighthearted historical romance with a hint of comedy, dash of spice, and a twist of suspense.

Fans of Mariah Stone and Scarlett Scott will appreciate this historical romance set in the backdrop of British Isles.

Clarissa is a bookish spinster who meets a friend of her cousins while visiting the seaside of Cornwall. Intrigued by his charms and unwavering duty to find his kidnapped niece she forms an unlikely friendship with him. Within their encounters the Duke conceals his identity from her to protect his family reputation. However, Clarissa’s character is not one of his usual conquest or dalliance.

She despises that marrying a Duke would be transactional and over ride her happiness for affection based on societal expectations. But yet passion blooms as they learn of each other’s pasts. He’s lost his family and gained a title he was not proud to carry. She’s running away from the pressures of her humble station. In the end they see beyond their facades to gain true companionship in a happily ever after.

Note: This romance gives historical perspectives of Cornish evading taxes with shipments of goods. The dangers of hiding away goods in caves along the shore brought thieves and bandits to the black country (Black given to the black sandy beaches and cliff rocks). The duke’s niece fell victim to a sinister plot and ran away from her betrothed into the hands of a bandit. What was feared to be a kidnapping turns the tables of the stark contrast of what the Duke held dear.

‘History was repeating itself, despite his best efforts to steer his family onto a safer course.’

Another instalment in the Wayward Dukes Alliance series, although I'm still not sure what's wayward about a group of dukes who support each other.

Jude is Duke on Montague, he'd rather not be as he doesn't like the way people behave around him. He's brought up his sister's illegitimate daughter in secret helped by one of the other dukes in the alliance, and is transporting her to her wedding when she's kidnapped. Or is she? As he's in Cornwall (on the way from the extreme ME of England to Ireland so Cornwall is on the way?????) When Harriet goes missing so he calls on ago a school friend Lord Nathaniel for help, but in pushing his way into Thaniels study he misses seeing Clarissa Thaniels cousin. Even when she offers to help Jude is ungracious, and doesn't mention he's a duke.
When he compromised her and offers to marry her, he still keeps his secret, even when turned down.

On the whole I liked this Clarissa is independent, educated and likeable.

One error though, as a Royal Duke the title passes down the male line, so if Jude had no son the title would go to a male cousin, if there were none the title would go into substance ,his sister's sons would not inherit. If Jude had a daughter he could get royal permission to pass the title to his daughters sons, but they'd have to be born before he died, and permission would be unlikely without a change of law.
That law has now been amended on the UK for the Royal Family.

I loved reading this novella about Miss Cassandra Penrith, cousin of a viscount and Lord Jude Montague (Monty). Monty is a duke in disguise frantically searching for his beloved niece Harriet, who has been kidnapped by a pirate while travelling with him to Ireland for her wedding.

Cassandra is staying with Nathaniel, her viscount cousin while her parents are away to find good matches for her younger sisters. Cassandra is firmly on the shelf due to her sharp mind and her curvy figure. Monty arrives at his friend Nathaniel’s home distraught at the thought of Harriet captured. Nathaniel suggests that Cassandra could help him find Harriet.

Monty has secrets he’s not going to tell Cassandra while they’re searching for Harriet but Cassandra has some secrets too. Monty lusts after Clarissa and Clarissa is intrigued with Monty but the road to true love is a rocky one for the two and will Harriet be found.
This story has a lot packed into it but it doesn’t feel rushed at all. There’s humorous moments, spicy moments and a great plot. The characters are entertaining and I read the book in one sitting.

I received a special copy of this book from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.

A Lighthearted Regency Romance with a Dash of Adventure
Jude came to town with one goal: to find his kidnapped niece. Falling in love was never part of the plan—but fate had other ideas.
Clarissa has long since accepted her life as a spinster. Burned by a past betrayal, she’s wary of romance and has no intention of giving her heart away again. Then she meets Jude, a man whose charm and secrets intrigue her. As she joins him on his quest to find his niece, she discovers he’s more than he seems—he’s a duke in disguise. But how can she trust a man who won’t share the truth?
This is a charming, feel-good Regency romance with just the right touch of adventure. While the story stands well on its own, I highly recommend reading the previous book, The Pirate’s Stolen Bride, which tells the story of Jude’s niece. The books are closely connected through character relationships, and reading both adds extra depth and enjoyment—even though each has its own satisfying happily-ever-after and no cliffhangers.
If you enjoy light, romantic escapades with witty banter, hidden identities, and a touch of mischief, this story is a delightful addition to your Regency shelf. I look forward to seeing what this author writes next!

Miss Clarissa Penfirth has been sent to her cousin Viscount Nathaniel Prescott house. Her family sent her so that her younger sisters may have a season. Clarissa feels she is firmly on the shelf due to her age and appearance.

Monty burst into Nathaniel home and tells him his niece has been kidnapped by a pirate; they were on their way to meet her aged fiance. Clarissa starts asking Monty questions and tells him who he should talk to.

Watching the interaction between Clarissa and Monty who is really Lord Jude Walsingham 7th Duke of Montague grow but neither one admits it. Clarissa knows he is keeping secrets from her, and Nathaniel tells him he needs to tell her the truth.

Clarissa goes to Jude room to talk to him, and things take a turn to intimate. Jude tells her, he wants to marry her and she would be a Duchess, and she refuses him.

This story had me laughing and a few tears. But the characters are well written. You never know where you will find love.

Lighthearted and entertaining, I enjoyed this romance where once again, the geese have the run of the courtyard. I previously read about the Duke in The Pirate's Stolen Bride, and one can only feel for Monty as he searches for his niece, even though his reasons for matching her with a man old enough to be her grandfather may be flawed. He does not take Miss Clarissa Penfirth into account when he begs his friend to help him track down the missing bride. Clarissa is pragmatic and practical, initially earning his begrudging respect, but with time, Monty begins to see the beauty that escapes others, and the outspoken lady intrudes on his sleep and every other moment of the day. Unfortunately, he is keeping secrets, and no lady likes to think that the man she is falling in love with is hiding the truth from her. Fortunately, with enough adventure and evading the law, Clarissa and Monty manage to set aside their differences and embark on love. I received a copy of this romance as a gift, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Miss Clarissa Penfirth is a wallflower who is firmly on the shelf. She is staying with her cousin in Cavalier Cove so her sisters will have a chance to find a husband during the season.

Mr. Jude Montague aka the Duke of Montague. He is on his way to Ireland to deliver his niece to her betrothal.

Jude and his niece stop in Cavalier Cove to deliver a message to Clarissa’s cousin. While there Jude’s niece gets kidnapped by a pirate and he needs help finding her. Clarissa decides to help Jude in his search and knows there is more to him than he is telling. Will they be able to find love among all the secrets between them?

I really liked Clarissa and Jude’s story!! It was a quick, fun and delightful read!! I really enjoyed how they both got to know each for who they were while working together to find the niece. The story flowed and kept you turning the pages to see what would happened next. I would recommend this book!!

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of Secrets of a Duke's Heart from Carrie Lomax. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This author is new to me and I am happy to say I will continue to read her stories. Clarissa Penfirth believes ahe ia firmly on the shelf, both due to her age and physique. She is smart, logical and systematic. Lord Jude Walsingham, the seventh Duke of Montague, visits the home of Clarissa's cousin, concerned for the safety of his niece who has been kidnapped while en route to meet her aged fiancé. He hides his ducal identity from Clarissa, who he is mightily attracted to at first sight, and together, they try to locate his niece. I enjoyed the premise of the story and how the characters are attracted to each other, especially since the hero is around 40 and the heroine in her late 20s. An interesting read!

This is a wonderful story with delightful characters, clever banter, and sizzling romance. Our heroine , Clarissa, is spunky and defiant, a seasoned spinster, who is visiting her titled cousin in Cornwall. In blazes Jude Montague, an arrogant, authoritative man seeking her cousin’s help in finding his missing Ward, Harriet, presumably kidnapped. Clarissa is intrigued by Mr. Monty, as she knows him, and offers to help with her quick wit and sharp intellect soon captivating the gentleman. As they spend time together, their relationship quickly escalates, but Clarissa has been burned before, and she’s not about to fall for false flattering and promises ever again, especially from a man with so many secrets . How do you think she takes it when she finds out that one of those secrets is her Mr. Monty, is really a Duke! A most enjoyable read!

Clarissa is not the ton’s idea of a debutant…so much so that she is securely on the shelf. Jude hates his “Dukeness”, refusing to use it when around people he doesn’t know. I adored how Jude was a bit of a wrecking ball when angered and his grumpiness gets him into trouble more than once. Clarissa’s intelligence and curvy body is her defense mechanism- even when her favorite cousin casually insults her. I enjoyed most of the story, but the 4 star rating comes from the f-bomb that, in my estimation wasn’t needed and a bit of spanking, I wasn’t prepared for. The author weaves a well developed narrative and paints the pictures beautifully-just don’t like the crass language. I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Clarissa had been burned in the past so she was especially cautious about men, especially those who appeared to not be telling her everything. Jude had a very tough childhood but he delighted in his niece so he was distraught when he thought she had been kidnapped. He was quite distracted when he met Clarissa for the first time as she was quick to take charge and offer her assistance in helping to find his niece. This is a sort of detective regency romance and is very different, in a satisfying and good way, from other stories. It was very interesting and well written with a happily ever after.

This was a really fun book. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Clarissa and Jude took to get their HEA. Clarissa was one of my favorite FMCs. She was smart, confident, caring, and helpful. But she was also vulnerable, had hurts from her past she felt with, and she felt “real.” Jude was a great character as well. He was reluctant to let people know he was a Duke, so he didn’t flaunt his title and money. He desired to be seen as “normal” instead of just “a Duke.” I liked that he had a growth arc in the story that was believable.

Their tale had angst, but it was still lighthearted, fun, amd passionate. It was an easy book to devour in one sitting.

Carrie Lomax never disappoints. Bringing together two more mature individuals (love the change of pace from very young H & h) requires lots of steam and trouble. Jude Montague, masquerading as a Mister, is hunting for his missing niece, Harriet, and seeks help from Clarissa, a woman who sees herself on the shelf because of her resistance to marriage and her, to her, unlovely physique. How these two manage to cut through the pretense and self-delusions makes for a lovely story with much to offer in terms of adventure, love, and hijinks! Although I received an Advanced Reader Copy, my opinions are my own and left voluntarily.

If you love a steamy romance between two people who at first just do not get on but eventually fall in love this is for you. Miss Clarissa Penrith is staying with her cousin when ‘Mr Montague’ arrives concerned and anxious that his niece has been kidnapped. Clarissa offers to help in the search for her. During this search Clarissa is compromised, receives an offer of marriage from Mr Montague who is hiding a secret. She rejects him. However there is a happy ending. Plenty of twists and turns though. I definitely recommend this book I thoroughly enjoyed reading an advance copy

A quick story of a lost niece, hidden identities and a spinster. Monty's niece is kidnapped and he runs to his friend for help. He feels he must hide his identity in order to save his niece's reputation. His friend, Nathaniel, offers the help of his spinster as she is wickedly clever. Thus begins the forced proximity, steamy glances and much confusion. Once I started reading, I wanted to finish it in one sitting! Clarke's is witty and smart. Monty is attracted, but knows keeping secrets won't help his cause to win the woman. You can't go wrong with any book by this author!

It helps to know that this overlaps the last book in the series. The duke, whose niece was kidnapped by a smuggler, is getting help to look for her and receives assistance from a viscount’s female, bluestocking, spinster cousin. They have interesting and heated interactions verbally and sexual. Characters are emotionally complex and Carrie does detail this well. I was slow to get going with the story trying to remember the duke from before but found the story engaging and a fast read. I did receive an advanced copy for an honest review.

What a delightful read!

This is the second book I've read of the Cavalier Cove series. Carrie Lomax has once again delivered a historical romance that hits all the right notes.

I was completely charmed by Clarissa and Jude. Their grumpy-sunshine dynamic was charming and engaging, with both characters feeling fully realized and emotionally resonant. I felt a real affinity with Clarissa. She stole my heart with her resilience, strength, and independence.

Lomax’s writing is as smart as it is steamy. Her spicy scenes are written with passion and intelligence, adding depth to the romance rather than just heat. I couldn’t put this one down and am already counting the days until her next release!

This is a fun short story that links in with the series. I have only read one other book in this series, which was connected to this directly, being the abduction of Harriet and her story. This was nice to read her Uncles side of things, chasing after her and how he gets assisted by Clarissa. It is good to see 2 older people getting stories and their HEA. There are some lovely steamy bits, and the banter is good. Jude is hiding that he is a Duke, partly to be treated normally but mainly to try and protect Harriet's reputation, Clarissa even when helping him in his quest knows he has secrets. Can she truly trust him, and will she convince him that Harriet should make her own choices in life.

I will definitely have to find the rest of the stories in this connected world.

So Many Secrets!
This is an enjoyable story, one in which we see Miss Cassandra Penfirth and "Mr" Jude Montague bump heads and in the process, fall in love.
What a rocky road they travelled and thank goodness they were able to eventually find their happy ever after.
Both the story and its characters were nicely planned out, formed and tell their story in an interesting and entertaining way.
I am happy to recommend this book having read an early copy of it.

Great light read with engaging characters who are a little outside the norm for the genre and no undue anghst. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Perfect length for a novella, enough to get your teeth into and have some depth so a
great short read when you don’t have the time to delve into something longer.

I loved Jude and Clarissa. They were not your typical characters. Both had hidden pain and secrets yet both were strong characters. They clashed because of their strong characters yet were pragmatic and respectful toward each other. They had great chemistry and love for each other. The setting was great and there was plenty of plot which was very interesting in it's development. Great story to read in one sitting.

Clarissa Penfirth is resigned to living as a spinster when she meets Jude Montague, a Duke who conceals his title while searching for his niece. Clarissa and Jude are caught in a compromising situation while searching for his niece and he awkwardly suggests they marry. They are not a good match socially giving his title and her being a commoner but as they work together to find his niece, they develop a connection with each other. A great short story with strong characters and a HEA

For a novella, this book packed a good storyline, fairly flushed out. A missing neice puts Clarissa in Judes path and he's fascinated by her wit and intelligence. It does not hurt that there is attraction between them. A few hidden secrets almost break them apart, but they realize that being together matters more.

Thanks Carrie for the arc.
