Confession.... lord Confession...... what can I say about this book or where to start is more like it because I love me some psychological thrillers that have you at the end of your seat and just when you think you have it figured out you have NOTHING figured out! This is my kind of book because one word sums it MIND %UCK! This was my first book by Carey Baldwin and let me tell you this will not be my last. I LOVED LOVED every minute of this story.
Faith has lost her husband and she is ready to move on and start a new life. The way her husband died seems to keep her mind in a constant swirl and she wants to no she needs to move on but she can't if she stays where she is. So she decides she is going to move to Santa Fe New Mexico and start her Psychiatry practice. When she opens her new practice her very first patient confesses that he is the Santa Fe Killer. Bound by law Faith has to tell the police but she is hesitant because she does not think her patient did these grisly crimes. But the law is the law and she reports him and when she does she meets his brother Jericho who is there to get his brother out of jail and his name cleared.
Teamed up with Jericho Faith sets out to find the truth. But as she gets closer to the truth she finds herself in danger and the killer wants her next and after he is done with her he will continue on his crazy killing spree. Confession by Carey Baldwin is a 2014 Witness Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Faith's patient confesses he is the serial killer the police are searching for. It is her duty to report this to the police and Dante is arrested immediately. Dante is the half brother of the wealthy and popular Luke Jericho. She had met Luke prior to his brother's arrest and the two had a connection, but it would have been unethical of her to pursue it. But, when Dante is arrested Luke insist on a meeting with Faith. Luke is positive his half brother did not commit these crimes. Luke has been trying to reconnet with Dante and bring him back into the family after Dante was sent away as boy due to an awkward family situation. Luke feels bad for resenting Dante all those years ago and wants to make ammends. So, Faith agrees to visit with Dante again to see if she can determine if the confession was authentic or not. In the mean time, Faith and Luke get better aquainted. They also begin to realize they are in danger from the "The Saint", whoever that may be. Is it Dante or is it someone else associated with Faith? Confession is a very good psychological thriller/ romantic suspense novel. I was riveted by the half way point. The author does an incredible job of putting the reader through the ringer. There are many suspects and elements that lead the reader to wonder who they can or can not trust. There is a stunning shocker in the end of course, that you will not see coming. I think I accused every person in the novel except the neighbor kid at one point or another. The story is the main focus, although there is romance, it's not the primary part of the story. The most impressive thing for me was how the plot was pieced together. Little tidbits of information will have you thinking hard about certain characters and strange developments will really keep you guessing and trying to determine if you can figure it out. If you like very taut suspenseful thrillers you don't want to miss this one. Carey Baldwin is one to keep your eye on! Overall this is gets an A or 4.5 stars.
Let me tell you that to me this book seemed like the 2nd book of the Blood Secrets series, where First Do No Evel is the first book, because the heroine, Faith, is the sister-in-law of Daniel Benson, the hero of the first book.
That said, I found this book less interesting than the first one. Where there the villan was really scary, here I didn't find it to be so.
Faith is the younger sister of daniel Benson's wife and she's been in love with her brother-in-law since forever and she feels mightly guilty about that because her sister committed suicide due a stron depression. So she feels responsible is some way for not being there for her sister, for not helping her when she needed help.
Faith is a psychiatrist, and she understands that is irrational, but that does nothing to lessen her guilt. To add to her already stressful situation, Benson has re-married, so she run away in Santa Fe and avoids all contact with her brother-in-law and her niece.
She opens a psychiatrist office, but she doesn't have many patients, actually she has oly one: Dante Jericho - and artist, bastard (what an awful word!!!) son of one of the wealthier rachers in the zone.
She's shocked when he confesses that he's "The Saint", a viscious serial killer.
And here the real action starts because Dante's half-brother, Luke, a lawful hair of the Jericho fortune, is convinced that Dante is innocent. He manages to convince Faith too, because she was not convinced even before due to a diagnosis she got for Dante's illness.
A lot of twist and turns occur and the chasing part was really interesting, but the why of the murders and murderers were not to my liking. It was too convoluted and at the same time too simple and I didn't like it. That is one of the reasons why I took away one star from the rating.
The other is Faith TSTL action at the end of the book! I hate TSTL moments and this one was really, really a big on!!!
But if you can overlook these two things, the book is very interesting and worth reading!
Dr Faith Clancy just wants to set up her new psychiatry practice. She never imagined she'd become involved in the Santa Fe Saint serial killer case.
A delightfully winding mystery narrative that is at times contains creepiness, passion, romance, and drama fill this story's pages for a multi-leveled tale yet not overly complex. Relatively fast paced action sequences add flair and emotion to the characters and plot.
Characters are authentic, varied, compassionate, intelligent, and flawed.
Psychological mind-bender best describes this latest suspense from Carey Baldwin. This time around we are in the world of Psychology. The definition sums up the plot of this book – the study of mental functions and behaviors.
Faith Clancy has moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico for a fresh start. She was the sister of the dead wife of the hero in First Do No Evil. She just opened her psychiatrist office and only has one patient so far. She thought she knew the diagnosis of her patient but when he confesses to the murders of the Santa Fe Saint she realizes she may have been wrong and turns him in. But she cant help feeling that he wrongly confessed and tries her best to make sure he gets the help he needs to get him out of the predicament he put himself in as the police want to pin everything on him and make it and open and shut case.
Luke Jericho is the patient’s half brother. He is a very rich man with a healthy ego and a bit eccentric. But he has a strong sense of family and will do anything to help prove his brother is innocent and get him out of jail. He’s also used to getting everything he wants and he’s wanted Faith since he first saw her. After his brother is arrested he and Faith work together to try and do what they can to prove he didn’t do the killings.
The killer gets a lot of page time throughout the book and even ends up as a patient of Faith’s for a very ironic reason. There are plenty of twist and turns through the book. The author does a great job of letting you think you know all about the killer, since we get his point of view, but she full of perceptions.
We also get to meet an FBI profiler and a psychologist who specializes in false confessions who absolutely hate each other but turns out they are the main characters in the next book Labyrinth which means our minds are going to be messed with more from this author (grins). I am really looking forward to their story.
Carey Baldwin is one of my new favorite suspense authors! I loved this book. She introduces you to the cast of characters early, but it doesn't stop the suspense at all. And she gives you just enough background information on them to hook you.
Faith only has one client, Dante Jericho, and when he confesses to being the Santa Fe Saint, she struggles with turning him in, as she doesn't believe he is guilty. But she has to do her duty and protect the public on the off chance that he is a threat.
Luke is Dante's half brother and after not seeing him for twenty years is trying to make amends with him. He calls in the best defense attorney and enlists Faith to help prove that Dante has made a false confession. Working with Faith proves to not be a hardship in Luke's eyes and the sexual tension that runs between them adds a nice romantic touch to this thriller.
I'm not going to tell you anymore as I would not be able to do the book justice and I don't want to let anything slip! The ending was fantastic and the creep factor was off the scale. I finished the book Sunday night after everyone else had gone to bed, and as I continued to read I began noticing all the creaks and groans the house was making. I spooked myself more than once that night because of this book! It has been awhile since I have read a book that actually had me checking the locks on my doors before I went to bed! Nicely done! Can't wait to see what Ms. Baldwin writes next!
I really had to work to like this book. Each time I picked it up I would get a little further into the book and worked through my issues a little more. I am giving it four stars because it really is a good book and my issues with it were resolved with further reading but I am trying to be really honest here. For a psychiatrist , this girl was just to naive. Was she just out of school? She seemed to rely on her text books like she was way to unsure of herself, which in some cases she should have been. Her "dangerous nut" radar was way off until it was almost to late! I do like Carey Baldwin's style of writing but this book just irritated me for a longer period than most.
Stellar psychological thriller mixed with romantic suspense. Loved the psychiatrist as sleuth angle and watching Faith and Luke unravel the mystery of The Santa Fe Saint's identity, as well as thesurprising motives behind the crimes. Already looking forward to the next book in this series!
A terrifving psychological thriller.Had me up.all night racing through it.loved the psychogogical edge & Faith&Lukes search for the murder &his motives.
Confession is book two in the Blood Secrets Series by Carey Baldwin. Dr Faith Clancy moved to Santa Fe to open her psychiatrist practice. When one of Faith's clients Dante Jericho confesses to being the Santa Fe Saint, she had to report Dante to the police. However, Dr Faith Clancy started to think that Dante Jericho was innocent and with the help of Dante's half-brother, Luke Jericho began to investigate who the real killer was. The readers of Confession will continue to follow the twist and turns in Faith's and Luke's investigation into who is the real Santa Fe Saint. Also, the readers of Confession will follow the blossoming romance between Faith and Luke.
I have enjoyed reading Cassidy & Spenser series by Carey Baldwin, and I was not disappointed by reading her new series Blood Secrets. I loved reading Confession the way Carey Baldwin portrayed her characters and intertwined then throughout the book ensured that you were glued to your chair until the last page is read.
The readers of Confession will learn about being a psychiatrist. Also, the readers of Confession will learn the differences between sociopath and psychopath.
For Faith Clancy, Santa Fe represents new beginnings: a new home, new psychiatry practice, the opportunity to make new friends and, most importantly, distance from the family that is no longer her's..and the man who never was. Everything looks bright, fresh and hopeful until Faith's patient - her only patient - confesses to her that he is the serial killer known as The Saint and is afraid he will kill again. Faith has no choice but to turn him over to the police. The law requires her to do so, even though she is far from certain that Dante Jericho, a man whose mind she believes is on the edge of psychosis, is the actual killer.
Luke Jericho is a man trying to piece his family back together. His late father's choice to have an affair with the family housekeeper then install the woman and the resulting child (Dante) in a casita on the family ranch when Luke was a child was bad enough. But when Dante's mother was killed in a car accident and their father banished a still young Dante from the ranch, it set into motion ripples that continue to reverberate through the Jericho family. As soon as their father died, Luke tracked down Dante and is determined to heal the breach between them and restore to Dante all that was taken from him by their father. Dante may be mentally and emotionally fragile but Luke believes in his innocence and is determined to prove the police have the wrong man. To do that, he needs the help of Faith Clancy, Dante's psychiatrist and the woman with whom he has been fascinated since the day she strolled into his art gallery...then right back out again when she discovered he was the brother of her patient.
Faith has been on her own long enough to be prickly, independent and unlikely to accept help gracefully. Luke has been in charge of his family's ranch and other businesses long enough to go after what he wants. There are bound to be fireworks, especially when Luke learns that someone has broken into Faith's home. Suddenly, he is not only determined to prove his brother's innocence but also to protect Faith. They are the only two people who believe in Dante and as they work to find the evidence that will free him their initial attraction deepens and strengthens. But, the closer they get to uncovering the truth the more their own lives are put at risk, for the real killer is much closer than they realize...and has Faith squarely in his sights.
Carey Baldwin has crafted another superb psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat and looking over my shoulder late into the night. Reading one of her books is not a passive experience. She doesn't relegate me, the reader, to the sidelines as an observer of the action. She places me directly into the minds of her characters: the sick and twisted mind of a serial killer, the terrified mind of a potential victim, the desperate mind of a man racing against time to save the woman he loves and the determined mind of a woman facing her greatest fears. I felt it all.
Carey Baldwin writes realistic characters, crafts riveting suspense, satisfies my romance-loving heart and throws in a twist that never fails to catch me by surprise. I highly recommend her books! ~PJ Ausdenmore The Romance Dish

Serial killers really creep me out... so, I'm always a little hesitant to dive in to these types of suspense/thrillers. But I was glad I gave this one a shot. Even though the story was very creepy... it was also very thought provoking and engaging. It just sucked me in from the first chapter and held my attention to the very end. The author threw in a surprise twist at the end that I did not expect... so, the book ended on a high note for me for that reason alone. Was not expecting that! There is a budding romance but the romance is more of a side story and not the primary focus of the book. I thought that overall there was a very nice balance of suspense, mystery and romance. The book is slightly graphic but not over the top... just enough for us to get the idea. Faith has just opened up her very first office as a psychiatrist and lucky her... Dante, her first patient, tells her he is responsible for the grisly Saint murders. Faith has to turn him in even though she has doubts that he is telling the truth. I'm going to stop there with the plot because saying anything more would ruin the suspense. But, Faith was about to unknowingly become a part of the killer's game. There are several layers to this story: We learn about Faith, her past and how she is dealing emotionally with the death of her sister. There is Luke, the half brother of Dante and the intriguing story behind his father's infidelity. Luke is also trying to re-build a relationship with the brother his father sent away years ago. And then there is Scourge... another of Faith's patients. Faith is unaware that she is playing a small role in helping him secure a spot for himself in Hell. Yeppers, this guy is high on the creeper list! His part in this story is not a total surprise but I think I'll just let the story tell itself in that regard. And then we have the budding romance between Faith and Luke... but, first they have to survive! :) I would definitely recommend this one to fans of mystery/thrillers who also like it sprinkled with a little bit of romance. I was pleasantly surprised and very glad I took a chance on it despite the serial killer theme.
I received a complimentary copy of this title for review by the author as a part of the Book Monster Promotions Book Blast!
What a breathtaking book. The writing was amazing! The suspense was graphic and spine-chilling but I took it all in because it was delivered so well. The romance was subtle and a very nice counterpart for the sometimes creepy and gruesome POV of the villain.
I loved Faith! She was vulnerable yet strong and didn't take any crap from Luke and didn't let anyone order her around. Luke was pretty awesome as well and I really loved seeing Daniel, Sky and Katie from FIRST DO NO EVIL again.
Weird because you, the reader, know who the serial killer is and there are several chapters with his POV and yet the book is as thrilling as any whodunit where you have to keep guessing who the killer is. Carey Baldwin incorporated enough elements to either keep you at the edge of your seat or make you shudder in trepidation. And then she delivered the KO-punch with a twist at the very end I reall didn't see coming. Kudos, Ms. Baldwin, kudos!!
Fave Quote: He picked up her hand, traced his thumb along her palm, trailing fire everywhere he touched. "And one of the first things you're going to learn about me is that I don't mess around. I don't cajole. I don't pesuade. I don't seduce. Subterfuge isn't in my nature." First his breath was in her hair, fogging up her brain. Then he was whispering close in her ear, melting her like warmed sugar. "When I see something I want, Faith, I don't apologize. I just go get it."
Honestly, I don't know where to start. Confession is the sequel to First Do No Evil and the heroine is Faith Clancy (Danny's from FDNE's former sister in law).
The prologue for this book threw me for a loop. It is written in first person from the killers point of view (and anyone that knows me knows I don't 'do' first person books), so I had a mini panic attack. Thankfully my faith was restored (excuse the pun) and the book switched back to 3rd person for chapter one.
Carey's Baldwins medical background again comes to the fore and the descriptions are horrifying and compelling all at the same time.
I'm not going to give too much away, we discover who the killer is very early in the book but how it all plays out had my stomach in knots more than once. I had several bad dreams last night that I'm sure I can blame squarely on Carey!!!!
Well done for yet another great book that had me glued to my kindle right to the end.
PS. Please tell me Spence and Caitlin are going to get their own book!!!
O to the M to the G I don't even know where to begin with fantastic creepy-lishes thriller. A full review once I get some sleep!
NEXT DAY
This is the 3rd Book I have read by Carey Baldwin, and I have to say, she doesn’t disappoint. Confession is a psychological thriller mixed with romantic suspense that will leave you breathlessly hanging on to the edge of your seat.
The moment I read the Prolog, I was creep out, Ms. Carey showed readers the inside working of a mad man’s mind. She had me hooked, because by this point I needed to know where she was going to take us.
This intense book had the right amount of suspense, mystery and intrigue to keep you turning the pages, and just the perfect amount of romantic, passion, that it doesn’t take away for the thrilling storyline.
I am normally pretty good and figuring about whodunit, but in this case, I have a confession to make, Carey Baldwin threw me for a loop. There was such a wicked and evil twist to this story that I never saw it coming.
It is a Thriller, which I usually do not read. The book started off very confusing. A story told about a young boy, but then it is fast forward to the present and becomes typical. A new girl moves to a new town and the popular, hot, wealthy guy that everyone wants to date likes the "new girl." After you get past the basic to the book it began getting interesting with twist and turn of determining the killer. I love that the book takes from the psychological aspect. I do like the in-depth sex scene and the ending. I do however wish it was longer.
There are a number of surprising twists in this book. A psychiatrist trying to get her new practice off the ground. Everything seems to be going pretty good, until one single patient. She is faced with her first major decision based on what this patient reveals. Everything begins! She also, along the way, falls in love with someone who should be the last person on her list to have a close relationship with. by the time you get to the end of this book, you'll be scratching your head in awe and shock!
This book had my attention from the first page until the last. Great character devlopmentj, and h
This book had my attention from the first page until the last, and I had a hard time putting it down until I finished it the next day. I enjoyed the character development and the way they interacted with other.
I quite enjoyed this book and became quite immersed in it. As a shrink myself, I can't express how very much I agree with the author's comments about how the DSM 5 is a piece of crap. Keep on writing good stuff like this.
I loved the setting of Santa Fe as I grew up nearby, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I liked the twist ending about the murderer, although the plot was predictable in that readers knew Luke and Faith would end up together.
Goed geschreven, lekker spannend. Niet alles klopt en soms word ik wel erg moe van de mannelijke hoofdfiguur, daarom 4 sterren in plaats van 3. Leuke twist aan het einde, knap gedaan.
