Despite barely surviving a vicious battle against the Nihil and the Nameless, Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asi knows the fight to protect the Jedi Temple on Banchii and the people of that frontier world is far from over.
With a fearsome army led by the infamous Nihil scientist Baron Boolan headed their way, Lily must trust her allies and dig deep to face their biggest challenge yet!
As Lily and her friends try to rebuild their defenses in time, Master Sav Malagán and Master Arkoff vow to rescue their comrades taken by the Nihil. Sav will have to look within her past to find the only person who can possibly help…
A very good final volume to the Edge of Balance series. Nice artwork good story a little light on the action but understandable as this fits the story.
A final confrontation is coming on the planet Banchii. Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asi must face her fear and step up to be the leader the defenders of Banchii need. The evil Nihil are returning, who will leave and who will stay/return to fight.
A good story and all good series a bit slow in places but it does its job in the High Republic era. I would like to see these characters return. The book finishes with a variant cover gallery of the previous volumes' covers.
The story felt very scattershot. Like, it didn't know what it wanted to focus on, so it just kept jumping around. It really should have just stayed with Lily. She's supposed to be the lead of this series, but she's barely in it. Also, it's very repetitive. We didn't need to hear that the nihil are going to the planet THREE times. I did enjoy the action. It was quite exciting. Overall it was fine. I do wonder if all these would read better back to back.
I simply am not interested in the main character very much, but all the side characters shine and I hope I get some closure with them in these last few books.
I've never been so excited for an email in my life. Thank you, Edelweiss, for the ARC of this and premonition. Full disclaimer, I was going to buy this anyway regardless, likely in both digital and physical, I love this series so much. But the fact that I got a chance to read it early!!!! Ahhhh!!!
I love this series, and I really enjoyed this book. I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as premonition, I just think the spin off does more for the overall THR story, and this volume is a bit slow to build up before it gets to its ending. Hence only the 4 stars, but I did really enjoy it by the end, and it does a very good job of ending the series and rounding off lily's story.
Edit: finally got the paperback edition for my shelf, and gave it a quick reread. it's weird reading it now having read Trials of the Jedi (no spoilers) but it also enhanced the experience somewhat, I was less impatient to get certain things that were held off for that book, and I was able to enjoy this book more for what it was.
Star Wars: The High Republic: The Edge of Balance 4 | Manga Review
Star Wars: The High Republic: The Edge of Balance 4 is the final manga of the High Republic publishing initiative, and they stuck the landing for the people of Banchii.
Banchii is finally safe from the Nihil. Banchii was the featured planet in the manga while getting mentioned in other stories during all three phrases. The planet was under assault by the Nihil, but the native Banchiians were able to repel the various attacks thanks to the help of Jedi Master Lily Tora-Asi and others.
The book does a great job enveloping various lessons into the narrative but none more than not doubting beings due to their size only.
The art was fantastic again. Mizuki Sakakibara delivered once again with a fantastic book. The art work is great throughout, and it hits on some of my favorite aspects of comic art.
I can easily differentiate the characters.
It’s easy to tell what’s going on in the action scenes.
If you nail those two aspects while also delivering fantastic art, I’m always impressed.
I loved Lily Tora-Asi getting a shout-out in Trials of the Jedi. It’s been a while since I finished this book, so I’ve also read Star Wars: The High Republic: Trials of the Jedi in that time. Talk about a huge, pleasant surprise when Jedi Master Lily Tora-Asi found herself on the B-Team for the Sophros/Planet-X mission.
Synergy!
Sure, she was only mentioned a couple of times and didn’t have a speaking line that I can remember, but it was still cool.
The final book of the series, set 228 BBY. As Masters Sav Malagan and Arkoff engage in a rescue mission for Shosho and Zimtok, Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asi attempts to prepare the inhabitants of Banchii for one last stand against the Nihil.
Much like the previous book of the series, this book suffers from too many protagonists and too many subplots, leaving the whole thing feeling a bit vague and unfocused. What I really wanted was to see Lily coping with the pressures of leadership as the world she's sworn to defend comes under threat once more. There is some of that, but it's totally smothered by plots involving Baron Boolan, Niv Drendow, the Drengir, the Blight, the Nameless and more.
The one thing I really did like here, however, was seeing a bit of subtlety and nuance given to fallen Jedi Azlin Rell as he is forced to choose exactly what side of the conflict he stands on and what or who he's willing to sacrifice to achieve his goals.
“To lead others does not mean to stand above them…but next to them”
I actually really enjoy these manga additions to the Star Wars canon. Our manga exclusive characters like Master Lily are very refreshing and fun characters. I was also very excited though to see Reath and Azlin and watch them have further character development and pulling in Sav as a tie in to the comics. It just feels like a fun read that doesn’t hold too much weight but brings a lot of characters together for an adventure and just lets you sit with the characters for a little more time and with the end of the high republic drawing near, I’ll take any excuse to sit with these characters longer.
Edge of Balance Volume 4 appears to conclude the Star Wars comic series set during The High Republic, bringing the adventures of Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asi and the people of Banchii to a close for now.
It's an exciting adventure that goes by quickly, building on the years of High Republic storytelling to wrap up this small corner of the galaxy. If you've enjoyed the previous installments of Edge of Balance, you'll definitely want to read the conclusion!
The conclusion of Master Lilly’s story. The big bad showed and the Jedi conquered her fear to save the day. No major deaths or plot twists, pretty straightforward end to this section of the HR universe. As a reader I was ahead of the plot most of the time so I found myself a bit board but as a completionist I am glad I read this. The HR is getting all its loose ends tied up so it’s not surprising it went this way I was hoping for just a tad more here. Still a good, quick read.
I love the continuing (concluding) adventure of Jedi Lily Tora-Asi. Love the supporting cast as well. I could have used a nametag to let me know earlier in the story that the pretty guy was Reath Silas, but I eventually figured it out. Great conclusion to a great series.
A good conclusion to the Manga story line of the high republic. Lily Tora-Asi has come a long way from the first volume. This volume included so many different characters from all over the publishing initiative.
Book #28 of my #30BookSummer Challenge! Star Wars: The High Republic: Edge of Balance, Vol. 4 by Shima Shinya. Gorgeous visuals in this final High Republic Manga! So much action and emotion on every page!
Review is for all 6 volumes in the series, read consecutively
A nice run, but far to interconnected with other storylines to be enjoyable on it's own. If you're not going to commit to 30 other books, don't read these.
Beautiful artwork, and the story was great. Enjoyed seeing an actual nice moment for Azlin Rell and the parts with Niv Drendow were actually funny. Some big wins in this volume! I've liked this dip into Star Wars manga.
"That's what you don't understand, Boolan. We are so much stronger when we aren't alone. Together, we are all the republic. And we will walk the edge of balance as one."
So ends my favourite aspect of the High Republic... I'm sad, because I really did love Lily and her adventures on Banchii. These books are worth reading and re-reading.
An okay ending to the first Star Wars manga. I enjoyed the story overall, though I think this may have been my least favorite of all 6 volumes. The artwork was good, and I liked the development of Lily. Plus it is always cool to see Baron Boolan, who looks great in the manga style. Same with Azlin Rell.
Sadly I think this story felt a bit rushed. I wish we got more time for the two padawans, but the small manga volume format seemed to not allow for that. I think too that the number of big character/plot breakthroughs feels a bit limited. Azlin and Boolan are here, as mentioned earlier, but I don't see them doing anything major with them outside of the novels. Moreover, I feel the plot kinda repeated itself. By this entry, the story of "the nihil are sending ships to Banchii" seemed like it had happened several times already. It would have been cool to see the characters in a more unique situation.
I do hope they continue to do some original manga stories moving forwards.
