"Leaving is one thing, but staying away is another."
This book was incredibly COMPELLING! Sometimes a book comes along that just demands your attention from start to finish; It literally drives you from page to page. THIS is one of those books 🙇🏻♀️
‘Nesting’ is essentially a story of a woman’s determination to start over, unpinned by an abundant resilience and love for her children. A sense of tension and urgency is held throughout the book, as is the hope, and will to escape.
I was totally blown away by this extraordinary debut novel 👏🏽
Dublin. 2018. On a bright spring day, Ciara Fay makes a long overdue decision that will change the trajectory of her family forever. In a split-second, she grabs arm fulls of clothes and straps her two young daughters into her car, driving away with no destination in sight. All she knows is she must escape her home and more importantly, her husband. However, with minimal savings, no job and no family in Ireland, she finds herself lost with no where to go. With a broken housing system, she finds herself, and her daughters, put up in a hotel room, on a never ending list for social housing. Summer passes, winter sets in, and Ryan is complicating matters by threatening to take legal action. Ciara, now pregnant, is faced with demon voices and emotional manipulation, whilst trying to keep her head above water. We travel closely alongside Caria as she navigates her way through financial difficulties, homelessness and Ryan’s constant manipulation….Can she ever truly break away from Ryan's control - and what will be the cost?
I was totally swept away by this thrilling, yet infuriating book. Roisín O'Donnell created a unique and powerful voice through our protagonist, Ciara. Ciara’s voice was so authentic and painfully realistic throughout the book. O’Donnell wrote Ciara’s story with a deep insight into important matters, such as emotional abuse, motherhood, and homelessness. Furthermore, she shines a light on modern day matters in Dublin; highlighting important social issues that need to be addressed ☝🏽
I didn’t expect such a plot to captivate me so much but O’Donnell captured Ciara’s state of mind so vividly. It was a rollercoaster of emotions; her fears, self-doubt, and loneliness. I felt it ALL right along with Ciara. Furthermore, I think reading it all within a day really helped to get into her mindset and connect with the story.
At the end of the day, the memorable message here is one of courage, determination, and resilience. I think we can all take a little something from Ciara’s journey, and lean into hope for what might just be beyond the horizon 💖 ✨
