Toby Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but the hot guy next door totally gives off serial killer vibes. Why else would he know how long it takes to bleed out from a wound? Yeah, ok, so I asked, but it was research. Being an author definitely makes for some odd questions (someone had better clear my browser history when I die, that’s all I’m saying). It’s not like I’m stalking my hot neighbor or anything—there’s nothing wrong with watching him out my window. Although I might have my own stalker (and not the cute harmless kind), which is kind of terrifying. Even if he isn’t a serial killer, maybe my seriously sexy neighbor whose eyes seem to glow red (a trick of the light, I’m sure) can help me out.
Dexter How do you tell your cute neighbor that cutting off fingers probably won’t cause a victim to bleed out? I don’t know if trying out Toby’s writing ideas is a good method of flirting, but there’s just something about him that calls to my hellhound. He’s adorable, awkward, and all kinds of clueless. He brings out my protective instincts, and I find myself wanting to please him, even if that means figuring out some of the answers to his rather bloodthirsty questions. When I find out Toby might actually be in danger, nothing will stop my hellhound from protecting him. He’s mine, even if he doesn’t know it, and I’ll tear apart anyone who even thinks of hurting him.
Socially awkward writer and serial killer(ish) hellhound fall in love; talking about dismemberment totally counts as flirting, right?; there’s death and maiming, but only of really bad people; Dex would literally burn the world down for those he cares about; Toby is adorably clueless; hellhounds have tails, and they know how to use them.
I’m so sad I lost my kindle notes for this because they were so cute! Dex is just…. oooooft. There’s nothing cuter than a hot man who’s a little clueless in the ways of ✨the human✨
This is one of those… go in, suspend your belief, don’t think too hard, ignore the world “growl” because even for hounds fuck there is a lot of growling hahaha, focus on vibes… and you’ll be rewarded with✨a bloody good time✨ This book can be strangely wholesome, and Toby is a bit whatever, but Dexter makes up for it and his need to rescue strays (ie humans), is wonderful. I’m keen to see where this big old found family goes!!!! 😍
ALSO, THE USE OF THE TAIL, CAN CONFIRM, I WAS INTO IT. I WAS INTO IT BAD 🥵🥵🥵🥵
How to Flirt with a Hellhound is book one in the Hellhounds of Paradise Falls series by Shannon Mae. This is my first book by Shannon and oh my gosh! I loved it! It was fun and quirky and steamy and swoony and just wonderful!
Toby is an author who writes dark paranormal romance. And he takes his research for his books very seriously! Toby has a new, mysterious and very hot neighbor that has had him doing plenty of peeking out of the windows, watching his comings and goings. Which have Toby convinced that his neighbor has some unseemly activities going on! At the same time, Toby has a fan that has taken his fandom to some unhealthy heights. It became so bad he and his PA had to block him from all their social media sites and his email. But it seems like he has found a way around it and has shown back up in Toby’s email inbox, even more frightening than ever.
Dexter is not human but is a hellhound shifter. When he came to Paradise Falls, it just felt ‘right!’ He and his brothers or pack, whichever you call it, can sense when a human has an evil soul. But there were no evil souls in Paradise Falls. There were plenty of neighboring cities where they could do their hunting, which was their job. To remove the evil souls from the earth. Then there was his new neighbor, the human, Toby. He knew Toby had been watching him and he loved it. There was just something about him that drew him in. He couldn’t explain it but just went with it.
“Toby was mine to protect, whether he knew it or not.”
When Dex learns of Toby’s problem, he vows to keep him safe. There was no way he would ever let any harm come to ‘his’ Toby. Because that is just what he was, his!
“If Sexy Neighbor was going to take charge, I would happily be a damsel in distress. Except for the damsel part, obviously. Dude in distress? Gentleman in jeopardy? Mister in misery?”
Once these two gave in to their attraction, they knew they were it for each other. But what happens when Toby figures out what Dex is? Will he still want him? And Toby is mortal with a normal life expectancy. Dex would probably live forever!
I loved every page of this book. I laughed out loud, giggled, swooned, because Dex!!! Mostly, it just made me so happy. I loved meeting Dex’s brothers and Toby’s two best friends. There are so many stories I hope will be told. For now, I’m just excited for the next book, Quinton and Liam’s book in How to Hack a Hellhound. I absolutely can’t wait.
This was so much fun and exactly what I needed after a few disappointing books!
I loved how Toby was so chill about the fact that he goes from neighbour to boyfriend to mate of a hellhound in a really short span of time!!
The danger to Toby was interesting, but a little too light on the mystery for me - I've been in a crime mystery mood for a while now so I want more of the crime, less of the romance 😂😂
The hellhounds were interesting though, and I liked how the species was explained through conversations rather than an info dump, or as though the hellhound is giving a lecture. It felt natural when they were talking about it and I loved Toby having a million questions.
I'm keen to see more of the brothers and whoever their mates end up being!
If a man growled this much near me, he'd surely be under animal control services by the time he growled his third growl. I mean, i get it dude you're a hellhound but ffs reel it in, you doggie
‘I knew I had suggested the whole getting food thing, but really I just wanted to snuggle up with him and hold onto him forever. That wasn’t exactly practical, though, and after a tiny tug of war on his arm I finally let him go and stood up as well. He grabbed sweatpants to put on, and I couldn’t help the growl that escaped me. He only looked over, amused, and gave me a wink.’
This was such a funny unserious great time 🤙 Toby and Dexter were super cute and funny!! I enjoyed meeting Dexter’s “pack” I’m excited for their stories!
My favorite line was when Dexter was like “if you run I will chase you” idk why I found it so funny and endearing and possessive at the same time, right after sexy time but every time I think of this book I think of that unserious line 😂
This book is exactly what you’d expect from the title: a delightfully quirky, slightly unhinged story about a delulu writer and his hot hellhound neighbor getting their HEA, It’s short, sweet, and a bit chaotic in the best way.
How to Flirt with a Hellhound is the perfect book for anyone looking to get into the Halloween spirit. One might hesitate to call this book “cozy” considering one of the MCs is a hellhound serial killer who enjoys torturing people who have rotten souls, but I’m not one of those people. This book was definitely a cozy read for me, hahaha. This was SUCH a fun (and funny) book, with lots of cute and sweet moments (in that possessive, stalkers way), but also filled with excitement! I couldn’t put this down, and there wasn’t a single moment that felt like it dragged. I’m already loving all the side characters, so I’m excited to see where the other books in this series go!
Paranormal MM Shifter x Human Low Angst Protective MC Adorable/Awkward MCs Sweet & Spicy
This was an adorable, sweet, neighbors to lovers with low angst and lots of PNR fun. Toby is an adorkable writer with a super active imagination that watches his sexy neighbor Dex and thinks that he might be a serial killer. There’s more to “Sexy neighbor” Dex, but it’s not what Toby thinks.
This was a cute short read that’s a perfect palette cleanser. The chemistry between these two is fantastic and the respect and protectiveness that Dex has for Toby is just wonderful. There is a small suspense plot that works out well and introduces all of Dexs supernatural brothers and I can’t wait to read all their stories.
Okay, this was SO CUTE and I really need to continue this series and check out Shannon Mae's other work soon. Dex and Toby were adorable together and I genuinely enjoyed the mystery/thriller subplot! I love suspenseful rom-coms like this, where enough of the book is happy and cutesy that I can get invested in the worrisome events without ever having any doubt that the characters will get their HEA.
I'd 100% recommend this for Alice Winters fans (and it reminded me that I need to read more of her books too) as well as fans of Onley James' Necessary Evils series!
I have no complaints about this story. I loved the two main characters and I also loved the side characters. The plot was great and I didn’t want to stop reading. All in all there was nothing I didn’t like about this story. I’m excited for the second book that’s going to be coming out January.
2.5 stars? I needed a mindless, fun book to take a break from a series I’m reading - and wanted something paranormal or spooky for Halloween season. This fit the bill. Hard to critique because it’s good for what is; however, It did feel like I missed the first few chapters or started with the second book of a series. It majorly lacked backstory and world building. I read one review that said it was a spin-off? So maybe the author assumes everyone has read her other series first?
What fun this book was! It was low-angst and both MCs are smitten with each other from the get-to, which I loved. It really enjoyed the hellhound family and how accepting Toby was of Dex and his brothers. Dex researching all of Toby's gory questions was endearing albeit bloody. And Dex collecting 'stray' humans was hilarious. Can't wait to read the next!
2.5 stars? This is just junk food. I feel bad rating it so low. I almost felt like I missed a prequel because there was a lot of world building missing. I assume there’s another series and this is a spin off.
No substance, but it’s cute and easy to read. I do love fated mates. I do not love books about authors. I felt like this was trying to be very cutesy to romance readers and it came across as annoying. Some errors, like in one scene the character picks up the hammer twice without putting it down. Wrong use of “so&so and I” which is super common in MM romance these days and pulls me out every time.
"The last thing I wanted was Sexy Neighbor to get eaten by the local werewolf (unless he was the local werewolf, in which case—lucky me)."
4.5 ⭐
Lucky me—How to Flirt with a Hellhound is one of those not-so-serious paranormal romances with just the right spice-to-laughter ratio, and I’m so glad I randomly picked it up.
I had an absolute blast with this one. I love a funny book—if you make me laugh out loud, you’re already a solid 4-star read in my world, and this one definitely did. Combine that with hot paranormal men who knot you? Well then, I’m sold, baby.
This is a super fast-paced paranormal romance set in what looks like a series about Hellhounds falling for humans (sign me up for all of them). Toby and Dexter are pretty fucking cute, and it was a riot watching Dexter try so hard not to be creepy and less “serial killer” around Toby—just because he wants to get close to his human obsession.
Meanwhile, Toby writes paranormal and dark romances, so he is all in on his neighbor being a little freaky. Toby is just like me: if I find out my love interest is a paranormal entity? I’m hopping right on that train, baby. Knot me up, daddy, and throw away the key—am I right??
Anyway. This was a really fun, fast-paced rom-com paranormal romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It's a perfect weekend-afternoon read when you just want something wild, spicy, and a little unhinged to enjoy without too much emotional damage.
I just wanna start by admitting that I had no idea what a hellhound was when I started this book. Further into I still wasn’t sure and finishing it I still have questions lol.
I wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did but I read “serial killer MC” and “stalker” so I had to try it. I really enjoyed these guys!! Toby is a sweet paranormal romance author and Dex is the hellhound serial killer who lives next door. I thought it was funny that Toby would wonder about a certain torture technique and then Dex would go out and do it and report back to Toby so he could put the findings in his book lol. I loved that these two were stalking each other basically. Dex more than Toby but they were equally obsessed with each other and I would say this was somewhat insta obsession. That didn’t bother me at all!!
One of the things though that kept it from being 5 stars was the lack of getting to know each other. Every time they were together all they did was have sex. They never talked about themselves or anything deep. I feel like we hardly knew either of the characters at all. I mean I don’t even know what to Toby looks like or how old he is. Hopefully the next book has more in the way of information on the characters.
Also idk if anyone else noticed this but the entire book Dex was called and referred to as “Dex” and then in like chapter 20 or something Toby stars calling him and thinking of him as Dexter. It was Dexter this, Dexter that. And then once the chapter was done the rest of the book he was Dex. Idk why I thought that was weird but it threw me off. Lol. I’m not complaining about it I just thought it was strange.
Anyway I really liked the secondary characters and I’m looking forward to reading all of their books.
NO CHEATING NO OM DRAMA (Toby has a stalker but of course he didn’t want him) NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP NO VIRGINS OR MANWHORES MURDER

This was a fun story! I love Toby and his constant plotting for books. Dexter was a clueless himbo 😂
There’s a tab bit of gruesomeness so read the trigger warnings. I did find the ending a little boring 😳. After the climax it just fizzled out for me but I still enjoyed it and will be moving on to the others.
To be fair I probably would've ended up picking this one up at some point. Read because I needed to read the next book for a group challenge. It turned into a bit of a binge read. Fun series so far. This one was Dex and I forget his name. Writer with too many questions. Nice intro to the series. I liked how the questions got asked like they were torture quests for Dex. I like Seb, don't think much of Josh.

Over-the-top possessive vibes, delulu MCs and quirky side characters that are all going to get their own "paranormal falls in love with human" love stories? Amazing keep them coming ⭐
