Rate this book
Dr. Sally Rodell is the latest star scientist to consult at Projexus, the company at the forefront of Florespark’s invention and innovation. A famed archaeologist and biologist, Sally is also YAIRA, an Except as powerful as she is mysterious—clearly not from around here, but so worldly it’s impossible to determine her place of origin. Yaira is here searching for something sacred to her but finds much more than she bargained for when she discovers a young girl, Stephanya Martinez, who has manifested her same powers. Who is she, and how are they connected? YAIRA must act quickly as this out-of-control powerhouse mimicking her abilities is attracting all the wrong kinds of attention and bringing the very ones Yaira escaped straight to her!

Written by horror film twins Jen and Sylvia Soska and penciled be Débora Caritá, Yaira #1 dives into the mysterious world and history behind The Rippaverse’s breakout femme fatale. Déborá’s talent for illustrating powerful women brings the Soska Sisters’ action-packed and riveting tale of Yaira to life for a story that CAN’T BE MISSED!

Once again, another competent and consistent entry in the growing Rippaverse. I’m waiting for the one book that really wows me.

But as I’ve said before, it’s rare a comic wows me, I find the majority of them to be entertaining, and artful fun. And this book falls into that category.

I enjoy that Alphacore played a large role in this. There’s some actual nuance in these characters and it’s interesting to see them play off each other. Alphacore are powerful and well intentioned, but a little brash and perhaps not as effective as they’d like to be. Yaira had good intentions but often jumps before thinking sometimes and the consequences are shown soon after.

The apolitical nature of the Rippaverse is great. I know I don’t have to read on eggshells, waiting for a cringe inducing heavy handed political message to be shoehorned in. Say what you want about Eric July and his band of creators, they clearly have their opinions, but I rarely find it intrusively taking me out of the story.

Just good comic book fun.

This is part of the Rippaverse line of comics, and it was my introduction to those comics. As such, even though it’s the first issue of the Yaira series, it includes a lot of characters who cross over with other books so it admittedly took me a bit of time to find my footing while reading it and figure out what was going on.

However, once I did figure out what was going on, I found it a remarkably well-written and exciting book. It’s a kind of superhero comic for people who are tired of how formulaic all the superhero stuff has gotten lately, particularly in the movies, or who are tired of the constant revision and reinvention in the comics. This book introduces a fascinating cast of characters who seem, despite their various powers, more “real” than in most comic books, but with the same kind of action that draws readers to comics in the first place.

Because it is an ongoing series, don’t expect to get the full story here, but I for one will certainly be coming back for issue number two.

Book #4 in the Rippaverse is Yaira.

Just a fun time with a female super powered being with a Nordic past but also from another world as well.

Love to see a solid character who can use the cold as a power.

Another character in this universe that you kind of don’t want to root for but then in moments do anyways.

This was filled with action from beginning to end. A solid introduction story as well.

Looking forward to the sequel!

Ok.... At this point I'm now convinced the narrative of these books being horrible is just spite....100% Not only was this story really good as well and the character was also interesting, BUT she clearly wasn't a Mary Sue either. Yeah I rather read them all myself, I'm not going to listen to bad reviews about it. They seem to be fake and pure spite.

A visually stunning comic book with a rich story that goes deeper and deeper with every page. There is so much emotion and beauty juxtaposed against good old fashioned anti-hero bad-assery.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this comic book--I liked the art and it was never boring. Some parts were hard for me to follow, and I wasn't really connecting with Yaira, but it was action packed and entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes with book #2.

I was very excited to read Yaira 1 so I pre ordered the same day it was announced.

I must say Yaira is an interesting character since she’s so morally grey, she’s also super beautiful and sassy.

- Pros:
1. Yaira’s character is interesting and not completely bad or good, even though I would say she’s more on the “dark side” sort of like an antihero
2. Her backstory was good. That was the part that I liked the most, I was very into her husband and children story, and I was surprised to find out Yaira was a mother! And she was so enthusiastic of having lots of kids and take care of her family. Even though at the end that made her so immensely sad.
3. Action is good and the book is quite entreating.
4. Altona is so nice 👍

- Don’t know how to feel about (?)
1. Not sure of Yaira is a Christian or she believes in a God but she talks about God (one) and then talks about pagan gods and Valhalla
2. Stephanya having the same powers as Yaira (I mean it makes sense but … huh)

- Cons:
1. When Americans want to portray Latinos on American media, Latinos from Latam most of the time cringe at the result, and that’s what happened to me reading about Stephanya’s grandma. I cringed so munch at any phrase in Spanish, since even though they made sense they felt very unnatural like no body talks like that 🥲 so cringe. Also the name “StephanYa” is so 😭😖☹️ It sounds so wrong in Spanish - a better option would’ve been just Stephanie or Estefania (since the pronunciation is different) I just can’t.
2. The dialogue is very messy and not all the time clear.
3. Yantoni and Yanessa repeated the same phrases. The big bug did the same over and over again.
4. There’s a part where Yaira is visiting Stephanya’s grandma and they are in a nursing home and next frame they are in a museum or something like that whatttt
5. There are parts where I don’t understand if Altona knows Yaira’s identity or she thinks Sally is an alien but Altona calls her Yaira once (?)
6. Stephanya’s grandmother talking about pagan gods and goddesses and she’s supposed to be Christian. Also it doesn’t make any since that her mother knew anything related to her ancestors from ICELAND 🤦🏻‍♀️

I can’t of feel disappointed by this issue but I hope Yaira 2 has more attention to detail and a better narrative.

Thanks!

The Soska Sisters killed it. Yaira Volume 1 is their best work to date.

Pros:
- Complete self contained story
- Minimal splash pages
- The average number of panels per page is higher than most books
- Old school comic book feel
- Debora Carita's art is incredible

Cons:
- Thiago Gomes is a subpar inker
- Censored curse words

Where to start? Yaira #1 is the Rippaverse's best book to date. The Soska Sister did an incredible job of bringing Yaira to life. And Debora Carita's artwork is superb. She has a good eye for layouts and knows how to tell a story sequentially. Unfortunately, mediocre hack / bargain bin inker Thiago Gomes dropped the ball. Some of the inking was messy and he is terrible at cross hatching. This is the same guy that butchered Joe Bennett's art. The Rippaverse needs to drop this guy and hire a proper inker. Also the censored curse words were really cringe inducing. It makes no sense to censor curse words as Eric July regularly curse in his videos and live streams. Lastly, J Brown's colors and Eric Weather's lettering were superb.

Overall, Yaira #1 is a phenomenal book. It has an old school feel with a high number of panels on each page. I'd say the average number of page panels is around 7-8. Splash pages are kept to a minimum. This is a nice change of pace from Comicsgate books which consist of 50% splash pages and the rest of the pages only have 3-4 panels on average. Can't wait for Yaira #2.

Sadly, this is a strong contender for the "worst comic I've read in 2024" title. It got my attention because I liked the cover, but that was one of the very few highlights for me. The story is not well-written, especially for a #1, and at many times doesn't make sense. This could have been excused in a regular 20-page issue, but this had 80 pages at its disposal to tell a coherent story, and failed to do so.

What I liked: The art was ok, especially in the fight sequences.

What I didn't like: The dialogue is extremely cringey, especially when the three off-worlders appear. (like this exchange which made my eyes roll out of my head: Alien: "Teck-sus? What a stupid name"; Yaira: "You don't @#$ mess with Texas"). None of the characters are likeable enough to make me care about them, not even the main one. There are too many instances where we're told something through a line, instead of shown. For example, the book tries to make it seem like the main character (Yaira) is some type of antihero, but at no point is she actually shown doing something bad. Or the three off-world individuals who show up to pick a fight with Yaira and get a lot of page count, but no reason is given other than repeatedly calling her a "traitorous wench". And many others, no point in listing everything considering I'm never going to pick up this title again.

My favorite Rippaverse title so far, hands down. While it still suffers from the pacing and dialogue issues that plagues previous titles, the Soska's writing and storytelling skill really shine through. I felt connected to the characters and there were actually answers given to questions I had. These books tend to be way too scared to give away the store, but Yaira struck a decent balance. 1st time read. Very optimistic 3/5.

Excellent start to the Yaira franchise! The Soska Sisters gave enough to satisfy our curiosity--for now! So many interesting paths this story can take. I loved the throwback to the Norse culture and also the tragedies of Yaira's past--gave a Highlander feel. Looking forward to finding out about mystery girl who exhibits powers similar to Yaira. And the connection between Yaira and Solari!

Wow, this is a very good start to a brand new character. Not only does it show her amazing display of power but it also shows that she's not a Mary Sue either. It also shows that she does have feelings she just tries to hide them in fear of getting hurt. Looking forward to reading and reviewing Yaira 2.

This is another fun new character from the Rippaverse. Yaira is in Florespark, Texas fighting some baddies from her past. This is a great start for a new character, and it leaves the reader wanting to see more. The art and design of the characters is really good.

Yaira is someone not to mess with. If you’re looking for the best female character then she’s the one to look into. Yaira is such a good story, the villains are amazing, there is not a dull moment throughout the comic. Such a unique character. You’re gonna want to read it.

I was waiting for this for awhile and it did not disappoint. There are things I don't know, but that increases the intrigue. I liked the science fiction backdrop.

It's fine she seems like she's going to be the Thor like character of this universe with an alien twist.
