Meeting personal and familial expectations can be a challenge. For sweet, beautiful and smart, Emma Clark, as the only child and growing up as the daughter of a rather conservative minister, expectations were always high. Even now at 30, an independent woman with a college degree, she is aware of her parents’ expectations for her—marriage and a family.
But Emma, a slim, beauty with dark chocolate brown eyes and shoulder length dark brown hair, has other aspirations. With a degree in finance and skilled at detailed analysis, Emma’s only barrier to success is to acquiring a job, and unfortunately even living in NYC, such a goal seems impossible. Sharing an apartment with her friend Charity, the two single women are able to manage the money to cover rent and food by taking temp jobs like their current gig waitressing a big NYC charity event charity event filled with the movers and shakers of the City, the idea of seeking a job with one of the powerful attendees while holding a tray of champagne filled glasses seems ridiculous.
But, sometimes fate intervenes—or natural clumsiness. Offering a drink to a stylishly attired female at the event she was working, Emma bobbles the tray, spilling the champagne on a dress worth more than the current holdings in her meager checking account.
And to make the situation even more embarrassing, Emma recognizes—knows very personally—the man accompanying the now irate and champagne soaked attendee. The man is Alexander Adair, the handsome, wealthy, successful, and sexy millionaire banker and financial wizard—principal officer at Dare Holdings. And she knows well the renowned and respected financial wizard—she met him 4 years earlier as the guest speaker at the Business Person Summit at Chicago State University where she was a student. They engaged in a passionate, but brief affair, but the encounter had altered her for life, leaving her unable to see other men as possible future life partners.
And now, they are brought back together at a gala where she is not an attendee, rather she is a server. And while Alex’s champagne-soaked date works to salvage her dress, Alex also utilizes another restroom to reacquaint Emma with his masterful sexual expertise. And they connect again, later at Emma’s apartment where they have sex—without protection—in the kitchen.
But when her apartment mate and best friend, Charity, learns of Emma’s hook up with her “date and secret man of the past” in, of all places, the kitchen, Charity has a meltdown, demanding a complete kitchen cleaning and sterilization. And, Charity feels impowered by the inconvenience to intervene on behalf of her kitchen where Emma has in her altered state, left her cell phone and has shared that she has her ex’s contact information.
So, on behalf of her friend Emma who has been swept away again by her Chicago and now NYC lover—and still irritated that her kitchen has be befouled by sex and knowing her roommate’s password, uses the phone and newly entered contact info with Alex to request an interview for a job. And so, when Emma is contacted by one of NYC’s leading finance and investment firm Dare Holdings, she has no idea that the cold interview offer is with Alexander Adair, her Chicago and kitchen lover—arranged by her apartment fairy godmother, Charity.
Author Aurora Monroe weaves a delightful tale of second chances at true love. I look forward to reading other romances by the author.
Alex, a millionaire investment banker, had previously dated Emma four years ago before coincidentally meeting her at a gala. Upon seeing her again, he found himself once again captivated by her. Meanwhile, Emma, still heartbroken from their past relationship, attempted to ignore Alex. However, when they eventually got together after the gala, Emma revealed that she was pregnant with his child. Feeling conflicted, she knew that her strictly religious father would disapprove of her situation. Emma's mother, on the other hand, was more understanding. Do to Emma's parents' expectations, she told Alex that they would need to get married in order to have the baby. Alex, uncertain of what to do, was faced with a difficult decision. Would he agree to marry Emma in order to keep their child? It’s definitely worth getting this book!
Although this is meant to be a quick read, the time and length of Emma and Alex’s relationship was pretty appropriate considering the history they already had. This had enough realistic and relatable emotions, drama, and reactions to keep me interested but not worthy of 5 stars imo.
There were many times when a scene would be abruptly ended in which the author could have gained attention or interest if she took the opportunity to expand or dive into the details unfolding. For example, when Charity called Alex while he was on the phone with his mother after leaving Emma’s apartment.
This was Alexander and Emma’s story. Sexy millionaire banker Alexander Adair is the fire that engulfed her 4 years ago and left her scarred for life. Running into him at a New York gala reminds her what he really is and she was right to run for the hills. Desperate for work, she lets her meddling best friend convince her to take a job as his analyst. It was an enjoyable read. And voluntarily leaving my review.
I really wanted to like this book! I just felt like the FMC and mmc had no chemistry at all. It wasn't well written :( it felt like a 16 year old wrote this. I didn't get any reason why the two characters cared/loved each other. It was very disjointed narratively and the characters had literally no depth to them. I really really wanted to like this book because the concept seemed interesting, but I just didn't feel any connection to any part of this book
Get ready for a heart stirring world of HEAT and Romance from Aurora's book. Emma and Alexander will deliver you passion, intrigue and the best heartfelt romance story ever. From the very beginning you will be so engrossed that you will have this book finished in no time at all.
Just couldn't put this book down. Had my emotions going from happy to mad throughout the story. Emma and Alex broke up 4 years ago but then run into each other at a party. Alex refuses to let her go again. They fight through several issues to get the happily ever after.
This book is a choppy mess. The story jumped around, missed important facts and had time passages with poor transition. The talk about ending the pregnancy was strange and disconnected. Did not finish, do not recommend
You ever just read about a couple and be like damn they don’t belong together. Well this one is a prime example they broke up and fought like over 10 times in the short span of this. I skimmed through all the spice because I just got an icky vibe from it.
I picked this book because-look at the cover guy!! Yum. The book was so-so for me. I didn’t like Emma very much, whiny, immature and out of touch with reality. I loved his character and the steam was ok.
I loved reading this book, despite it being a shorter read it was one of my favs of the year so far! Loved the story line, balance of romance, drama and rollercoaster of emotions. Finished it in 4 hours with a stop in between which is one of the fastest times for me personally
Just seeing the journey that Alex and Emma took showed that age was only a number where true love is concerned and the obstacles when faced together can be easily managed.
This is your typical age gap romance. Sexy CEO who’s a millionaire. Young woman fresh out of college. There’s stream, there’s drama and surprise, there’s a baby!
22 year old recent college graduate Emma & 38 year old millionaire Alex cross paths 4 years after the end of their relationship. After having an otherwise fruitless job search Emma takes a job working for Alex as an analyst. As they work together they get closer and she gets pregnant but can they overcome the past? Will their secrets be revealed and if so what happens then and how will it affect everyone involved? If you enjoy reading about people falling in love all over again and are comfortable with a 16 year age gap and hidden pregnancies then I recommend this book for you.
This starts off well, but once we hit pregnancy it becomes fairly pointedly pro-life. I just prefer books to be less… issue driven? Also, the relationship is fairly toxic in too many ways.
