BUTTON BOX - RASCALS AND REVENGE

When Susan and Baxter fall into the employ of Bram Jarvis, a man with revenge on his mind, they are soon caught up in strange new adventures. Meanwhile, old enemies are still on the loose.

Susan time slips between two very different worlds. Her everyday present is at home and school but by night she has a magical past in Victorian London. There Baxter, a Pearly King coster boy and rat catcher, has taken her under his wing. Children alone in the crowded city, Baxter’s trades bring them into unusual company across a richly varied society.

Each of her worlds is just as real to Susan, who never knows what might happen next in either of them during the twists and turns of this exciting sequel to Button Box.

I absolutely loved being back in Susan's world, especially when she's in Victorian London with Baxter.
Susan has a special button box that allows her to timeslip between present day and back to the Victorian era. She doesn't seem to have any control or will over when this will happen so never knows where she will be when she wakes up.
In the present day she's had to adjust to her dad's new marriage, 3 new sisters and a new mum. Not the easiest of adjustments but I like how the author included this and the troubles a child of her age would experience fitting in at home and at school.

However it's in the past where its all happening. A man requests their services to try and find someone from his past, he's hell bent on revenge. It takes them into the murky world of underground fights and quite disturbing use of rats.
I was totally engrossed in the story and couldn't wait to get to the end to find our what happened.
Another great read, despite this being aimed at children, I've loved them both.

This is the second Button Box book and follows on nicely from where we left Susan and Baxter after the adventures of the first book.

Firstly, I do think it's best to read these books in order as there were a fair few references to the first book and returning characters who follow through this story and it would definitely benefit the character development for you.

Secondly, this is aimed at a young YA audience - age 10-18 years - but I absolutely loved reading this series.

I love the concept of the time travel between Susan's present day and the Victorian London setting - both timelines giving us an interesting story arc.

I really felt for Susan, being an only child and the situation with her father causing her to feel so lonely - but this blossoming friendship with Baxter brought colour and adventure to her life - and just a little danger too!

The writing is wonderfully descriptive and it's easy to slip between the two eras - but it's the Victorian that fascinates me the most and I become totally immersed in the sights, sounds and even smells at times, of this wonderfully dark and gritty period.

Totally loved this book and really hope that there might be more to come soon.

Button box- rascals and revenge by Ruth Enright.
I did enjoy this book. I loved the cover. Gorgeous. Great story. I got into it straight away. I haven't read the first book. I was still able to enjoy it.

Blurb.

First of all... what a lovely front cover! It really drew me in and gave me warm, cosy vibes - hot chocolate by the fire!

This is Book 2 in the series, and while I haven't read Book 1, I enjoyed this still.

Susan is the main character who flits between present-day and Victorian England, and with natural twists and turns, it makes for a great read.

Ruth has evidently done lots of research on Victorian England as she really brings it to life in the pages.

A brilliant read and one that you need to add to your TBR!

I previously read the first in this series and enjoyed it so I was sure I would enjoy this too.
It features a lovely writing style and an adventurous story that I'm sure lots of readers will be fans of. It continues the story set up in the first book Button Box and although aimed at a YA audience I think the elements of time travel and mystery will appeal to different age groups.
If you haven't read this series yet then I recommend it.

I loved book one, Button Box and I was excited to read Rascals and Revenge. I think this one might even be better than the first. Now while this is probably aimed at a young adult audience I have enjoyed every minute of it. I adore how Enright captures both of Susan’s worlds both present and Victorian London. I have to say I prefer the Victorian setting but I do think that is down to Baxter!

Once again the story is rich with both characters and adventure. I love the way we never know when Susan will travel between times and what adventures she will find. I loved the mystery and plot of the second novel and how it ties to the first as well.

If you are looking for a bit of whimsy, particularly leading up to a certain festive season, this one is brilliant. That said, I think you can read it any time of the year and enjoy it.

As always thank you to ZooLoos Book Tours for the copy to review. My review is always honest and truthful.

This is the second Button Box book, and it takes you back to Susan and Baxter after the adventures in the first book.
I read the first book too and let me tell you – those are cute!
Magic time travel button box? I’m sure everyone has dreamed of owning something like that. In the button box books, it’s a welcome escape from reality where the girl has to face the changes she has no impact on – dad’s new family, having a new step-mom and new siblings, having to blend in, having to fit in at school.

I really enjoyed this book! It is a sequel but I read it as a standalone book and didn’t feel like I missed out on too much. It was very well written and there were a lot of themes within it that would appeal to all audiences not just YA readers. I liked that there were two time periods being swapped between as it made it relevant but also gave the reader an insight into the past. A great book which should be in libraries for young children to enjoy!
