Kate Winter teaches dog owners how to train their canine companions. During her spare time, accompanied by her Lab, Dakota, she explores the woods and beaches on foot or horseback. She's worried that something's happening in her relationship, but she can't get her girlfriend to talk to her about it.
Faith Hutchins recently lost her sight after a terrible outdoor accident. She's dealt with anger, depression, and her blindness primarily on her own. A seeing-eye dog would help alleviate her reliance on anyone else, but the guide dog school has been unsuccessful in providing her with one. On a mission to find someone who will train a dog specifically for her, she ultimately zeroes in on Kate.
They say lightning never strikes the same place twice. But positive lightning is notoriously unpredictable and can ignite a fire when and where least expected… no matter who's in its path.
Laurie Salzler holds a degree in Natural Resources Conservation and Outdoor Recreation. She has worked with animals (wild and domesticated) her entire life, including several years spent in the veterinary field and equine industry at training and breeding facilities in New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. She is an avid outdoor enthusiast, whose activities include horseback riding, hiking, snowshoeing, bird-watching, and photography. One of her favorite past times is walking with her pack of canines.
A particular passion of hers is training dogs, which developed largely from raising numerous seeing-eye pups. The success of those dogs in becoming reliable Leader Dogs for the blind gave her the confidence to branch out into starting an in-home dog training hobby in which she travels to client homes to help them develop into effective pack leaders with their dog(s).
A Kiss Before Dawn and Right Out of Nowhere were published by Blue Feather Books in 2012 and 2013 respectively. She is currently hard at work on several more stories, including a sequel to her debut novel, A Kiss Before Dawn. In the Stillness of Dawn will be released in 2015.
Didn't think I'd enjoy this book, but as it went on pulled me deeper and deeper in, so by the end I was totally hooked. Slow, embracing, warm and comforting - ideal for a wet afternoon.
4,0 stars I didn't like this as much as the first one in the series. The romance felt a bit more flat, but it was still very gratifying to see Kate grow a spine and Faith start trusting herself again. The cute dogs were a nice bonus.
Good solid book. Second of the three guide-dog books I've read. Two of which have been fiction, including this one here. Third of the four 'books-with-blind-main-characters' books I've read, three of which have been fiction, and romances.
I liked Faith, though I had been under a mistaken assumption about her past. I had gotten the odd impression that Faith was a rich adventurous woman who got into an accident that caused her to go blind. Everything about her seemed to scream class and privilege. A couple of comments late in the story corrected my misconceptions.
Kate was likable, but her whole situation with Trish was vile. It's possible that Kate's bad traits were heightened and or created just being around Trish but they certainly were there. Like the book opens with Kate answering the phone. She seems to go out of her way to try to cause Trish to not be able to sleep while answering the phone. Literally pounding on the bed, taking the call right there instead of leaving the room, etc. She seemed to have no concern for Trish in those moments. Just bringing in another dog without mentioning it at all with Trish. Granted, Trish is a massive bitch, but that was a bitchy move of her own that Kate pulled.
Then Kate and Trish split. Due to Trish cheating on Kate. Kate spends weeks crying and losing weight and being generally horrible. Faith helps pull Kate from the abyss. Kate and Faith seem to be going in a certain direction, they even kiss. Then Trish makes some begging comments and . . . . now it's Kate who is the one doing the cheating. Bah.
I suppose I'm supposed to feel sorry for Kate, but she knew Trish was a vile nasty creature for years, and knew their relationship was dead long before she found Trish cheating on her. Heck, they'd fallen so far in their relationship that they weren't even on the "friends with benefits" level, but below that to "roommates who very rarely tease each other." Bah.
Still, I liked Faith enough, and despite what I've written, liked Kate enough, that I could look past that if I could. Which I could, since the story was solid. Neat story of training a guide dog. Riding horses, hiking, etc.
Although one of the main characters in this book, Faith, has recently become blind I did not find her to be a pitiful character, in fact she came over as very positive in dealing with her blindness and the fact that she was not giving up on life despite her disability. Kate, just getting over a difficult relationship, really warms to Faith and their interaction as well as addition of the dogs and horses gives the whole story a real feel good factor! So if you like dogs, like horses and like a good romance this is the book for you!!
I’m angry. It was a totally ok book, nothing earth shattering about it, but the scene (maybe in the middle of the book) between Trish and Kate pissed me off, because yeah the book is just ok but I’m in love with Faith, she is such a sweetheart.
I adore Laurie Salzler's work. Her writting style is neat, interesting and it deffinitely traps you into keep reading I enjoyed the characters in this story greatly and also enjoyed reading about characters from A Kiss Before Dawn. I almost fell backwards when I read Cindy Jenkins taking part of a scene in this book. I was confused with what really happened to Kate's family, though, and I have to confess I liked the first scenario to Kate's background better than the second (as morbid as that might sound). It makes the character more... her.
I appreciated the authors knowledge and love of dogs and horses, both shine through and made the book really enjoyable and the characters easy to relate to. Her sensitivity to and knowledge of adult onset blindness was also very interesting. Kate and Faith are so genuinely likeable, funny and felt very real, the story flows well and was a pleasure to read. Best lesfic I have read in ages and for me Laurie's best to date.
It was a little slow starting out and I skipped a few pages but stuck with it until the end. I wouldn't want to come across a horny moose either, I was in tears from laughing so hard.
This was a cracking little read... I really enjoyed the fact that the author knows a lot about horses and dogs. This lady knows a lot about animals and has people pretty squared up too!
