This summer has already been more than Paige bargained for.
12-year-old Paige hoped to spend her summer vacation with her best friend, writing a movie script and making a video game. However, her artist mother has other plans for the summer, including a secluded lakehouse and lots of outdoor adventures.
When a mysterious drawing transports Paige from the lakehouse to a forest full of talking animals, she realizes that art is far more magical than she knew before. Accompanied by her new friend, a talking mouse named Fritz, she must make the dangerous journey from the forest to the Great Wizard's Tower if she ever hopes to find a way home.
But the journey won't be easy, and Paige will discover there is a lot more waiting for her in this world than she could have ever imagined.
Fun adventure with cute characters. I'd say the ideal audience is probably ages 9-11 when Kids are still new enough to portal fantasy to want a fairly simple story with a couple of scary moments but nothing too intense.
Fans of Inkheart, Narnia, and A Wrinkle In Time will adore this!
✨ I was given an Advanced Reader Copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review on my social media platforms.✨
Follow Paige on what she thinks is going to be a fun but rather uneventful summer trip with her mom. Staying at her grandfather’s old cabin is nice but it makes Paige wonder about where it was he disappeared to years and years ago. It’s on a day time hike with her best friend that Paige herself disappears from this world and appears in a different one. Ihnarya. She’s shaken, disoriented, and looking for her best friend when she realizes this world is not like the one she came from. The plant life is more vibrant and beautiful and the animals talk! They wear clothes and even swords, to protect themselves from the monsters in the forest. Paige knows this place is as dangerous as it is beautiful but that doesn’t stop her from pressing on and seeing what’s in store.
I LOVED THIS! This was the perfect amount of adventure and the perfect amount of fantasy. It was written in a way that was easy to understand but so engaging at the same time. The descriptions in this book were vivid and real!
This is a middle grade book but as an adult I fully enjoyed this book and look so forward to more adventures in Ihnarya. This is a book I wish I had as a child and am so happy that I can share this with my own daughter when she gets to be a little older.
✨ A huge thanks to the author for letting me ARC read for her again! ✨
This book is ADORABLE. It’s not my usual read, and I’m well out of the target audience, but it kept me entertained from start to finish!
I would consider it very similar to the above-mentioned titles, only with slightly lower stakes. Rather than having an evil witch to contend with, Paige is focused on finding her lost friend, finding a way home from the fantasy world where she’s become trapped, and dealing with some big feelings (that lead to some rather heart-warming situations with family members). Even with the lower stakes, there’s still plenty of magic, adventure, and things to fear in the dark!
The cast of characters is fantastic and includes wizards with pointed hats, adorable talking animals, and ELVES. Gotta love books with elves! The characters are unique and fun to read, and they will definitely intrigue younger audiences.
This book has a lot to do with friendship, family, and learning how to properly understand and deal with one’s HUGE emotions (done in a NOT boring way; this book SHOWS a character doing these things, rather than “teaching” a kid how to do it). It also touches on forgiveness and moving forward after being hurt.
I think this book is perfect for ages 8-12, but younger audiences would also be fine, depending on the child’s ability. It would make a great read-along. Content is clean and should be easy to understand for the younger ones.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Give this one a read!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.
If you are looking for a good old-fashioned fun adventure, look no further! This story is packed with talking animals, a unicorn, a wizard, and creepy monsters.
Paige is a typical kid, and while there are times that she may be a little annoying for an adult, I suspect she would be very relatable for a child. She is a mix of understandably worried for herself and her friend and in awe of the world she finds herself in. She not only has to deal with finding a way home and search for her missing friend, but also has to come face to face with some deep hurts and anger that I doubt she even knew she was harboring.
I listened to the audio version, and the narration is honestly fantastic! The narrator has an amazing range, and does amazing voices that are super fun to listen to!
Page Magic is a youthful and energetic story of imagination and creativity that explores relevant themes in a relatable way. I love how this book encourages a disconnect from technology to explore the beauty and healing power of nature. Paige dreads a summer without internet, but soon discovers new friendships, how to overcome her fears, and how to forgive. I loved the dynamic cast of forest critters and their various personalities who helped drive home the themes of family and finding a way forward after life’s disappointments. The book is an excellent adventure for young readers, and I hope to see more journeys to Ihnarya soon!
I enjoyed aspects of this book. Portal fantasy can be tough to get right, and I liked the initial arrival of Paige in Ihnarya. It reminded me a little of The Land of Stories.
While this book is technically standalone, it very much feels like there are still unanswered questions and plot threads that need more time, so I'll be curious to see if there are additional books.
I would love to see this book get a professional line edit. There were a few things that needed shoring up on the prose front. One was that lay/laid was consistently misued, and another was unnecessary prepositions.
Overall, it had interesting potential, but I'd love to see additional books level-up on plot and prose.
