In my younger years, I dabbled in writing as a therapy and an escape, but I never expected it to become more than that. While deep in the depths of mommying several small children, I took seven years to write my first book, Just Ella. During that time, I taught myself how to write a novel through a whole lot of trial and error. Not the most time-efficient method, but it gave me an education I wouldn’t have received from a class or a how-to book. Something about the struggle of writing without a formula or rules worked for me. I wrote for me. I wrote from my heart space, and I think that’s the reason that Just Ella has found room in so many of my readers’ heart spaces.
I write clean romance because I love it. I love the discovery of new love. I love the relationship building that’s done with looks, words, brushing fingers, and tentative kisses. Jane Eyre is the hero of my youth and taught me that being true to yourself and clinging to your convictions will be hard, but it will bring you more genuine happiness than giving up on yourself ever can.

This was really bittersweet 😢 I liked some elements of this one, but did have a harder time with it for different reasons (particularly the caregiver scenes and the heartbreak her family was going through).
There was a little too much in the kissing lesson scene for me personally, though I’m sure many wouldn’t be bothered by it.
Nicolai was a kind sweetheart, but I do wish he has been more proactive in telling her his feelings towards her (rather than just showing her) because she kept thinking he was just a good guy and had no chance with him because of their status difference. It was just a wee bit frustrating with those parts. 😅 The bonus chapter from his perspective was really good to see and made me wish we had his POV throughout the book. Overall it had its cute moments but wasn’t quite the lighthearted story I was wanting right now. 💗
(Just a note that this book is connected to another book by this author, “Hooked”. Unsure of which one should be read first, but that one was published first so I’m guessing that one?)

What. The. Swoon!!!
When I heard that Annette Larsen was doing a Father Christmas retelling, I could barely contain my excitement because I LOVE the story of the original Saint Nicolas. I mean...saving girls from slavery/ unwanted marriage??? That is the PERFECT setup for a romance story right there! I couldn't wait to see how Annette would spin it.
I was NOT disappointed! One of the best parts of Annette's books is that she crafts such compelling and relatable characters and weaves them into a romance that is SO swoony! I loved how determined Annabelle was to save her sisters from poverty (the socks 😭😭😭) and I adored Nicolai's quiet love.
Then the kiss!!!!! *flails* OH MY GOSH possibly one of my favorites EVER.
Seriously, if you haven't read this yet, you are MISSING OUT!!!! It is the Christmas book EVERY woman needs during the holiday season!!!

This is such an adorable story.
Larsen has crafted an absolutely entrancing tale. Annabelle and Nico are so. Stinking. Cute. Their arcs are so well done. And the plot was so unique and so well-written. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. This is the type of book that makes you finish the ARC and immediately see if the paperback is available.
The themes of giving and sacrifice are at the core of this darling story, and I was not disappointed with how Larsen wrapped up the story. (Get it? Wrapped? Father Christmas = gifts? Fine. I'll return to the review.) Annabelle and Nico were so giving in their own ways. Nico, overall, was my favorite. No one can resist a protective sweetheart of a hero.
While I believe every reader will enjoy this story, those with family members suffering from dementia and alzheimers may find this tale hits close to home. That and caregiver burnout are found in The Hidden Gift, handled both delicately and gently.
In conclusion, those seeking a touching tale with fairy tale vibes and winter feels will find what they're looking for in The Hidden Gift.

This was a pleasant enough read overall. All wholesome for this medieval set (I think anyway) time story that had me curious to see what would happen with some characters. Kind of bittersweet and pitiful in some ways yet still heartwarming in others with restoration and forgiveness. There was a bully included which is certainly a part of everyone's life.

This was such a beautiful book to start the Christmas season. As it was my first Father Christmas retelling, I was curious how the plot would unfold. Simply put, I adored it.
Annabelle must care for her sick father and two younger sisters. Working as a maid in a nearby manor, she is barely able to make ends meet. When Nico, the new estate steward, turns out to be young and handsome Annabelle is even more surprised to learn of his kindness. When Nico hears of the abuse and cruelty of the butler, he shows concern for Annabelle and the other maids. After she is unfairly fired by the butler, Annabelle fears for the survival of her family. Little did she expect the help and generosity of Nico to continue when she leaves the manor. Or that he may see her as more than a lowly maid.
This was so beautiful. Nico was my favorite character. His sweet and gentle giving was a cinnamon roll personified. Annabelle's habit of putting others' needs and happiness before her own was very endearing. I enjoyed watching the romance unfold.
I will definitely be reading more in the Christmas Chronicles series.

I've read several of Annette's books, but The Hidden Gift was DEFINITELY my favorite!!!
First of all, I LOVED the characters. I loved Annabelle's kind spirit and willingness to help those around her, even when it isn't always the best choice for her. IHer perceptiveness was so interesting to witness. It was fascinating watching the ups and downs of her relationships with her sisters. I also enjoyed seeing how she confronted problems that faced her and considered her priorities before making a decision.
As amazing as Annabelle was, Nicolai was even better. First of all, he's good with kids *squeals*. He also is so considerate to those around him and doesn't think less of those below him. I love all of the creative ways he tries to help Annabelle. His declaration of love at the end *melts* was SO EXTRAORDINARILY SWEET!!!!!!!!!
I love the themes woven throughout this book. The theme of hard work was perfectly balanced with the importance of serving those around you. Both just fit so well with the Christmas setting.
Speaking of Christmas... this book was just so Christmassy. Everything from the wintry setting to the stockings to the children just combined to make the perfect Christmas aesthetic. Again, I can't wait to put up a Christmas tree and drink peppermint hot cocoa and wear fuzzy socks. Actually, I think I'm going to go put on fuzzy socks right now

Anyway... Annette's The Hidden Gift was a perfect beginning to the Christmas Chronicles series!!!!!!! It's already on my bookshelf waiting for one of my sisters to steal it!!!! OBSESSED with this St. Nick retelling
Hold onto your hot cocoa because you're going to be blown away by this book.
From page one you're immediately emotionally captivated by Anabelle and her story. Her selflessness, pride, independence, and all the other relatable weaknesses we all have just drawn you in.
Then walks in Nicolai and it's all swoon from there.
Seriously. Two words. FIRST KISS
Okay more like this saying
"What should a first kiss be like?"
"Ask me again later and I'll show you"
Okay not exact but like that was the jist of the conversation and 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 the romantic tension was tensioning y'all while still keeping it PG and swoony. Just kisses around here peeps.
Okay but really. Anabelle's emotional growth in this story is stunning. She's dealing with a father who has a medical condition similar to dementia or Alzheimer's, is trying to provide for her two sisters and is grappling with falling in love.
And it was done beautifully.
So get your cookies and cocoa ready because you NEED to read this story this Christmas.
Trust me, this Santa is worth swooning over.

This was such a beautiful book! The romance between Annabelle and Nico was so sweet, touching, and tender, and I love how caring Nico is towards her. Annette K. Larsen is one of the best authors in writing sweet, clean romance and this is one of her best books ever! It really touches on the spirit of giving and was such an excellent read before Christmas. Incredible book!

Oooo I really enjoyed this one! It’s an imagined origin story of Father Christmas. The kindness of the main characters, their tender love story, and how it all wrapped up made for a special book. ❤️
Most of it actually takes place in the fall so it’s a perfect cozy read for even this current season. 🍂 Release Day is Oct. 15th and I’m looking forward to the rest of the books in this collection by other authors too.

I think this is one of my favorites with the Winberg series, along with Hooked. I loved the St. Nick background story retelling with it! It was such a clever idea and the way the author slipped it into her already created world was so smooth and seamless. Of course, this can also be a stand alone book, but it's fun to see the other characters I already know about. Nico was great and the kind of man every girl wants!

Overall it was a good sweet romantic story, I just wasn’t super invested or intrigued while reading it. The characters left me wanting more and the plot didn’t hold my attention. There was nothing wrong with this book, and I do think it’s a good book, it just isn’t for me.

OMGoodness! This book had all the perfect cozy Christmas vibes and I adored it! There is conflict, but not enough to really shake you out of coziness, which I loved. It was perfectly sappy and sweet and swoony. The kisses described were divine and perfect for the hopeless romantic I am at heart.
I loved Annabelle, also isn't Belle a perfect Christmas name? I related to her a bit too much in her willingness to always give so much of herself but basically refusing to ask for help when she needs it. Alas, she is also the optimist I will never be, always seeing the best in those around her- finding good intentions and reasons, even when that person isn't willing to help as they should.
Nico is just so perfectly sweet and swoony while also being realistic. He is the protective hero that most girls yearn for in their hearts, while also having some boyish charm to top it all off.
Honestly, this was my first book by Larsen but it will not be my last! I look forward to reading her other novels!

I was super excited when I got an ARC copy for The Hidden Gift and I loved it so much—managed to fly through this book within a few days! This was such a heartwarming story and right from the beginning I was instantly pulled into the story, and I barely wanted to put it down! It’s a very quick and festive book for the holidays, and it follows the story of Annabelle trying to overcome obstacles with her family, but it soon changes when she meets Nicolai. When all seems hopeless, there truly can be miracles and that you don’t have to take on the world alone. That it’s okay to let others take care of you. Thank you Annette K. Larsen for the ARC copy; this was just the read I needed!

The Hidden Gift: A Father Christmas Origin Story is a must read. I absolutely adore this book. I read it in one day because it is THAT good. Like -- almost forget to get the kids picked up from school because I was so engrossed in the story – good.
Annabelle is a hardworking, responsible, dedicated, and caring maid in a well-to-do household. She works especially hard because her family at home is depending on her wages. Annabelle is fortunate enough to meet Nicolai Closs, who is also kind, loyal, fair and caring. The journey they both take to save her family from poverty, as well as discover their feelings for each other, is full of swoony moments and beautiful banter that I am still smiling over.

Meh. Not really my kind of thing. Very confused why we have it cataloged as Teen/Young Adult title when none of the characters - NONE - feel like they're anything other than adults. Hated that the Brunson character seemed to be something to get people into the places the author wanted them, not to mention how the character is ultimately dealt with. Just too many cliches for me.

VERY light on the retelling elements. I liked that Nicolai Closs (great name!) was referenced as liking cookies and sweets, but overall it was a reach to call this a Santa origin story. 2.5 stars

This was a wonderfully heartwarming story! The romance was very high swoon and oh so sweet! The plot was tense at times, making the book nearly impossible to put down. Yet it was the perfect story to put me in the Christmas mood. Themes included hope in desperate/heartbreaking circumstances, humility, love, and generosity.

(I want to start by saying, I'm sorry it's so long. I've never been good at keeping stories short especially when it comes to books, but enjoy😁)
This is such a cute, full of emotion, fast-paced story and I love the originality of the Father Christmas retelling. It's such a cozy read for Christmas time or really anytime! It's beautifully written and I love her style, it's just fun. I really enjoyed how the main character thinks and views the world. She is flawed, and she works on those and grows through the story which is also a point for it.
It's such a heartwarming tale of a desperate girl, trying to survive and care for her family. Who feels a little helpless and abandoned at times, as well as that she's neither wanted nor needed. But grows to see it's the opposite. And a selfless, giving guy who's only wish is to help and see her in a better situation. No matter how much she refuses his efforts. The Father Christmas story is subtle but really well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was like little secret gifts sprinkled in helping you understand how his story started. Not a lot of dramatic things happened but the little plot twists and turns it took added so much to it, never leaving you bored.
Now to meet the mc's
Annabelle Winters the FMC. First off I love her name it fits really well with the theme. Secondly she is very independent and stubborn. She doesn't want hand-outs or pity. She wants to make it on her own and prove she is capable and hardworking in all that she does. But she is also super helpful, protective, caring, and loving towards others. And very self-sacrificial to a fault, always putting others above herself. Her friend Cecily (who by the way has her own story in Hooked: a peter pan retelling which is also an amazing book but I digress) is treated cruelly and unfairly by the butler of the manor they work in as maids. Annabelle helps her friend and other maids as well as her family who live nearby. She tries her hardest but is it enough?
Then we have Nicolai Closs, I also love the fun twist on his name. And the FMC calls him Nico 😉 Now Nicolai is our knight in shining armor. Our caring, selfless love interest who only wants to take care of Annabelle and continually seeks her out just to talk, and tease. And the only one who gets her to laugh when little else seems bright, or happy in her life. He is also the estate steward and has lots of sisters who made him into the gentleman he is today. He does not give up and no matter how much Annabelle might push him away or refuse his help, he becomes smart and sneaky about it, helping her in ways she can't refuse.
His and Annabelle's banter is so fun and their first kissing scene was unique and I loved it, here's a little snippet from afterwards,
"I've never been kissed before," I whispered.
He raised his eyes to mine again. " I was worried about that."
I tilted my head."Should I have kissed boys before now?" I asked.
"Of course not," he said as his face flushed. "That's...none of my business. But a first kiss-" He shook his head sadly. "That's not how a first kiss- should be."
........ I asked, "How should a first kiss be?"
He answered with, "Ask me another time, and I'll show you."
And that's just a piece of it, I loved this scene. They both start letting the other one in and get just a bit vulnerable. And their second kissing scene is even better 🤭 but no spoilers for that one you'll just have to read it to find out. But it's very swoony, and sweet.
The story follows Annabelle through a lil her struggles and wins. Her and Nico's interactions are always so brief and I wanted more but they were so cute so I guess I can't complain. Their connection is felt and they make an amazing couple. Though their path is rough.
You can feel the emotions in this story the desperation, the heartbreak, the hope, the loss, and the love. One of my favorite lines embodies most of these feelings,
"I don't want him here because I made him sad. My bruised and lonely heart wanted so much more than that, even though I had no right."
But then that ENDING! Oh My Gosh!!! For a lack of a better term, I Loved It!! It was beautiful and emotional, heartwarming and sweet, and such a great conclusion to the story. I cannot even describe how good it was! Which is why I suggest you read it for yourself asap. Such a cute Christmas read!
Now to end just two of my favorite quotes from the book:
"I had always been a hard worker. I'd always been a good person. Yet, life had seen fit to throw me out into the world and demand that I try even harder. When would my efforts be enough?"

This book was definitely swoon worthy! I loved every moment of this book and was so sad when it ended. Luckily I haven’t read the Tales of Winberg series so I can get more from this author! It was really hard for me to pause this book. It had a sweet slow burn romance.
Annabelle’s life made me cry at times, but I loved seeing her keep going despite the hardships. I loved Nicolai and how kind and generous he was. I loved the importance of family in this book and all the characters contributed to the story perfectly! It gave of Ever After vibes in the sense of the setting and the balance between fairy tale and real life.
This was such a cute Father Christmas origin story and I would gladly read it again! It was a clean romance.

The author did a wonderful job reimagining the origin story of Father Christmas. Although I'm not a Santa Claus fan, Nicolai Closs was so very kind (and young!) in this story, that I loved him. I also really liked Annabelle, the FMC, who is gentle, but works hard and loves harder. My heart broke for her and her sisters watching their father suffer a brain tumor before doctors even knew what to call it or what to make of his symptoms. Although this is a cozy holiday story, it's not one you'll forget easily.

I loved this so much! It wasn’t a full-on Christmassy story (in fact there wasn’t really any specific holiday celebrated during the events of the story), but I loved that it still used parts of the stories about Father Christmas/Santa Claus/etc to make it’s own sweet romance! I loved seeing things I recognized from the story I knew and all the other parts that were mixed in. I loved how caring Annabelle was and that she was selfless when it came to her peers and others she cared about. I loved that Nico recognized her desire to do things for others and tried to help her in the same ways. And I loved how protective Nico was of Annabelle and others under his charge. I also absolutely adored the epilogue!
Summary:
Annabelle needs to continue to have steady work so she can help her family to get by. But when the house butler turns his attention to Annabelle’s work and causes issues for her, she worries that her steadfast employment may not be as steadfast as she hoped. Her only saving grace is her new boss & friend Nicolai Closs and his desire to do right by those under him in the household. But even that may not be enough if the butler is determined to get his way. I loved this one. I feel like Annette K. Larsen is magical. I open her books and am transported to another time and place and when I finally close the book it is with a sigh of contentment. I wasn't sure how she was going to make this into a Father Christmas book, but I loved how she tied it in and of course I loved the romance!

What a wonderful heartwarming story of a hardworking girl who works as a maid and helps
others when they’re in need. They are all bullied by
a butler who makes their lives miserable but especially one maid in particular. Finally Annabelle with the help of the head housekeeper smuggle her
out in the night to a new job away from this man. Annabelle finds herself attracted to a new person on the staff afterwords but later this same butler fires Annabelle because she won’t tell him where the maid
went he had abused.
Annabelle and Nico still meet up though as she helps her sisters and takes a new job taking care of a man’s
children. When the butler threatens her and her family again financial help comes and Annabelle knows it is from Nico. Later a devastating proposal is made that she feels she must accept but once again help arrives that could change that proposal. However, Annabelle once again tries to help her sisters without regard to herself until she meets Nico on her way to her employer and he finally makes her see how he really feels about her!
I loved this book and the caring nature Annabelle shows towards everyone around her except herself!
With all the giving she gives, she is the one she denies in making others happy. In the end she does get that happily ever after she always dreamed of but
was afraid she would never have!
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend you get this book and read it! Your heart will break for the pain that Cecily and Annabelle have to endure
