— There is a time for everything in a gentleman’s life. First lover. First zombie kill —
James Hurst is a man of obligation and good morals. After most of his family perished as a result of the new, horrific illness, he didn’t hesitate to live up to his new responsibilities. A few years later, he is married to his childhood sweetheart, with whom he has a son and his political career is going smoothly. Unfortunately, most of his family land had been overridden by the undead and therefore, it brings no more profit. Facing bankruptcy, he decides to risk it all and try to get the jewels hidden in his family manor…
In order to get there, he will need to leave the safe city walls and cross a region swarming with ghouls. He hires Ira Russell, a man whose skill at recovering valuables from lost territories has earned him a small fortune. From the moment James first saw Ira, he knew the man was dangerous, but he could have never predicted just how much of a danger he would be to all that James had always believed in.

K. A. Merikan is a duo of queer writers who don’t believe in following the well-trodden path. In their books you can dip your toe into dangerous romance with mafiosi, outlaw bikers and bad boys, all from the safety of your sofa. They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and in fiction. Their stories don’t shy away from exploring the darker side of M/M romance, and feature a variety of anti-heroes, rebels, misfits, and underdogs who go against the grain. Be prepared for shocking twists, dark humor, raw emotions, and sizzling hot scenes.
K.A. Merikan also writes steamy M/M romcoms as Devon Doe.
Ok, so I actually read the 4 Zombie Gentlemen stories included in this collection as separate works but, as this edition is more available for the readers, I decided to review this one as well... ;)
TBH, steampunk is a quite new genre/AU to me. Sure, I've read some shorts and I've seen a film or two that felt steampunk-ish but that was it. Never did I imagine that I would find such a complex, detailed and beautiful steampunk setting, and on top of it full of zombies!, in the Merikan Zombie Gentlemen series :)
I was entranced from page 1, guys!
The stories themselves are relatively short, so I wasn't overwhelmed by descriptions of all those steam-connected machinery and whatnots and also the "zombie plague" was mentioned and quite solidly shown but not over-present. I really appreciated that as a newbie to this genre.
But, what I loved the most were the MCs! James is a noble, the only survivor of his family, who managed to escape the zombies from his country estate. Along with his beautiful young wife he got to London and led quite a wealthy and posh life as an MP... But, his financial resourses start to become scarce, and the spendings on his wife and son's comforts force him to look for a "treasure hunter" who'd be able to bring some gems and jewellery from James' abandoned country house...
And that's how we meet Ira . I must tell you the truth, he's one of the most enticing, delicious MCs I've read about. He's big, he's rough and he's incredibly skilled at killing zombies and staying alive... ;) An ex-sailor, who visited a lot of exotic places and knew a lot about "exotic" ways of lovemaking ;)
Ira and James' bed, hmmmm, "practices" were incredibly kinky, sexy and hot. I just couldn't get enough of them!!! Their genuine affection and caring about each other. Their jealousy and, at the same time, thoughtfulness of Katherine and little Henry. And finally their dirty but incredibly sensual sex - it all melted my heart... *sighs*
Ow! And I simply looooooveeeed Josh !!! Could we maybe get a little story of his own? Pretty please, Kat and Agnes! :) :) :)
All in all, a great read, guys! You can find my original "mini" reviews of the stories collected in Scavengers here: - July - August - September - Eton Mess
Enjoy that kinky, steampunk-ish, zombie story and the whole series!!!
This reads quite well as a novel instead of a series of short stories. I always prefer it when a series of short stories are released as a collection, and I even think that series of short novels, 150 to 200, pages, would be better as one novel of epic length. But that’s just me.
I enjoyed this a lot and would give it 3.5/5. I really enjoyed the shibari and am going to have to look into finding more books that feature it now.
Edit 23/03/2018: This book introduced me to a whole new world of BDSM. Thank you!
This was just ok. I actually liked the characters a fair bit, but some of elements just never seemed to gel as well as I would have liked. I can see why the author has pulled these and put them only on their Patreon where they're listed as books they don't feel represent their writing any longer. Some of what detracts a little from diving fully into the story is that really these are just a series of vignettes in the lives of these two men as they were originally written as short stories. Their initial feelings come under immense pressure trying to recover James' family treasures from the zombie ridden family home. He hires Ira as his guide/protection and danger ends up revealing the secret fantasies James has never spoken of. We then jump in time forward a month to where these two are randomly reunited and from their things felt a bit rushed in the development of their relationship. When you add in some questionable decisions by both characters this ended up just feeling ok. But the world was interesting and as I said I liked the relationship between Ira and James themselves.
This isn't my normal preferred genre however need this for reading challenge. As I'm current reading another series by these authors, I thought I'd give this book a try since I'm loving the writing from K.A. Merikan.
This collections is made up of 4 short stories that take place in like the 1890's. We meet a married man, James Hurst who has hid from his true sexuality his entire life. James has found his family in dire financial distress and needs to return to his abandon castle for a hidden treasure of jewels. He hires Ira to help him fight the undead that have taken over the countryside manor. During this trip James is scratched by an undead and fears he will be infected and soon die. Therefore, he takes a chance to explore his hidden desire to be with a man, Ira, before he dies. Thus begins their affair. James does not die, and the men struggle to find a way a man of James political and social standing can continue their relationship without his wife or society becoming aware of this forbidden relationship.
The only reason I'm giving a four star rating is I felt the storyline with James wife was left unfinished. In all, even with reading about the undead, zombies, ghouls, I did enjoy this collection. If this is a genre you enjoy...I definitely recommend.
Scavengers: July – 3.75 stars Scavengers: August – 2.5 stars Scavengers: September – 2 stars Scavengers: Eton Mess – 2 stars
Some of my friends might know that I like zombie stories. Zombie stories with two men in love, action and good writing. I thought I would get all this with this collection and while reading the first story – July – I really thought this could be great!
But there was something that really annoyed me. Both MC’s have names, you know? James and Ira. Instead I read a lot about “the other man”, “the younger man” or “the aristocrat”. Threw me out of the story every time! But nonetheless, I liked the first story because there were zombies, men in love and action.
But the rest of the stories? I think I read more about their sex life than everything else. I wanted to know so much more! About the world, the people who lived in it and about the zombies. Instead I got one kinky sex scene after the other… But at least James and Ira got called by their names.
