Garth McFarlane thought he lost his shot at the big leagues. Well, his second chance has arrived.
Garth had been the favorite for the number-one draft pick in the next season of the USA's top sport. His college career was supposed to end on a high note… but it didn't. Sabotaged in his final game, he found himself shut out of the Dungeon League of America, forced to retire his jersey in shame. With no other options, he leaned on his university degree and became a licensed psychiatrist and therapist.
That should have been the end of his dungeon-crawling days. But then, a new dungeon appeared in his city. Before he knew it, an ambitious coach from the upstart X-Treme American Dungeon League was knocking on his door, a catgirl assistant in tow. Their pitch? To make Garth the new captain of the New Arcadia Phoenixes.
There's just one awkward sticking point in the contract—his three teammates are all absurdly attractive monster girls in need of therapy, and he's the one providing it.
I DNF this book after 10 chapters, as I found the probable harem members just awful, and the MC lame.
The MC was once the greatest dungeon runner in the college leagues, but "froze up" against a powerful creature in the championship game, and was labeled a bust so that was the end of that potential career. 6yrs later, he's a psychiatrist treating patients, when he gets an offer to resume running dungeons while providing therapy for his "teammates". He jumps on the idea, despite the women all being not the good kind of crazy.
The women were basically all caricatures of insane women that put the motto "don't stick you manhood in crazy" to mind. The goblin kleptomaniac. The narcissistic self-love driven dark elf. The naga that gets off on her own healing magic. They are all described as supposedly insanely hot, but the only part of that description that is accurate is the insane part. They are all annoying in the extreme, and all hyper-focused on sex with the MC. There is zero effort the MC would have to put in to get laid. In fact, he's actively avoiding their crude attempts to get him in bed.
Sure, they all have some potential to be good at dungeon running, but they are all so annoying and screwed up, why would any sane psychiatrist take them on as both teammates and patients? Not just because of the conflict of interest, but also due to the fact that anyone thinking they will reach the top knows the level of dedication needed to get there. And these 3 women can't even apply themselves to learning the rules of the "dungeon league" they will be a part of.
If you think bat-bleep crazy women make things hotter, then you'll probably like this book. I honestly hate that type of thing, and can't imagine having to put up with their level of shenanigans for an hour, much less the time they have to spend together.
First, i have to admit, i missed the tags indicating the more adult features here - I would have expected it, but I just thought it be an interesting take on sports/dungeon, might be good. So far, I have no idea. My guess is no - it's based more on League of Legends and similar games that I don't actually know much about and definitely did not enjoy playing myself. Still if it's written well it could be fun. Except...
So, I'm maybe halfway through this and only got this far because... I don't know actually, I haven't closed it and opened a different book yet. I don't know if I'll finish it - it doesn't deserve to be finished but I am intrigued to see if I'll like the actual point of the book - the dungeon-sport thing so I'm trying to make it through the first match/skirmish/whatever. I have finished worse books. Well, at least 2 worse books I can think of.
However, I'm rating it now - because I need to rant a little. The women aren't anything but fantasy characters that only seem to exist to want sex with the mc. It's distrubing and there's no reason for it. If some of the 5 star reviews are to be believe this is standard writing for these authors - you all need to broaden your habits. There are better spice books and better fantasy books and better LitRPG books.
I'm giving this 2 stars ONLY because I reserve my 1 stars for books that are terribly broken. At least the writing here is. . well, it's writing and doesn't contradict itself. I know the whole thing is meant to be comedic, but most of it just comes off as prater.
Also, ain't nobody's rear making that kind of sound when they move around, what a stupid detail that is brought up constantly.
X-Treme American Dungeon League by Virgil Knightley - 3/5 Stars
A Solid Entry into Unhinged HaremLit Territory
This book delivers exactly what it promises: slice-of-life action, light romance, heavy spice, comedy, and a healthy dose of the absurd . If you're going into this knowing it's HaremLit/LitRPG and that genre is your thing, this book is fairly decent.
The Good: It hits all the expected beats for the genre effectively. The premise is entertaining, and the execution is solid enough to keep you engaged throughout.
The Reality Check: This is straight-up men's fantasy with super hot babes - and I mean super horny hot babes who are willing to get down at the drop of a hat. What's more men's fantasy than that? The female characters are absolutely insane and want the main male protagonist so badly they'll literally pull out weapons and gently lay them on the table as an implied threat if they don't get their boots knocked. In fantasy land, I'm totally down for that level of ridiculous.
The Verdict: While it won't make my reread list (which is my personal benchmark for 4-star ratings), I'm definitely picking up book two. It's entertaining enough to continue the journey, even if it's not destined to become a favorite.
Bottom Line: If you enjoy HaremLit with over-the-top scenarios and don't mind the completely unhinged approach to romance, this delivers exactly what you'd expect - no more, no less.
Note: Just a random reader's honest opinion, mostly for my own reference.
This is a great story about a group of outcasts and rejects that are unconventional let's say, but that's what makes the story so much fun and their victory so much better! I really like the addition of the therapy sessions. It let me see the characters in a different way than usual. You still get a little bit of their backstory each time, but it's just seen in a different light. Garth's therapist is hilarious and as weird as it is his advice to the team members is spot on every time. All of the girls, despite their problems let's say, are cute and adorable in their own way and the relationships that develop through those character flaws her written very well and add to the depth of the story and the games and in the therapy sessions. Overall, a great book that I would definitely recommend reading!
Seriously this might be their funniest work yet. The girls in this one are on another level of ridiculous but it works very well to the MCs straight man. There is also a lot more depth to the system than I was anticipating. Not a lot of numbers tho which is in my opinion a good thing. I feel at times the pacing would slow a bit too much when an aspect of the system needed to be explained but it was worth it. Anyway the jokes in this one are absolutely bonkers.
I think if you liked Coven King and Solar Dragons Need Love Too then you'll thoroughly enjoy this one.
Girls are bizarrely horny, like its pervasive, story feels like it takes a backseat a lot for the girls to say some throwaway line. And their pasts are also a stretch, they are somehow super horny all the time but just latch onto the MC and don’t say anything about other guys, real wish fulfillmenty. The lack of death is also not something that usually works for me, the fact that it treats it as a sport helps a bit, but changes the genre. It’s just a sports slice of life with a fantasy coat of paint. Glad I managed to finish it, as a lot of the plot points that turned me off a lot at the start get explanations that helps the thing as a whole. Not sure if I will continue this or not...
I’ve got not ever read two other books that incorporate sports has it theme and they were trash an I thought it be the same aging and I was wrong.
The book isn’t an OP or epic adventure it’s a real world type setting even if seen through a perverse looking glass. We get chacthers with real problems and then try to better them self lay becoming a professional sports team and some hanky-panky on side but this story real gets you even gets you cheering for team.
P.S.
Lay I could over look the movie references using the name of Japan just seem strange.
I have enjoyed harem books for years but this was a riot to read. I loved the world and the choices of monster girls unexpected. I want to read more of these Brooks and listen to an audio versions day also.I was glad how you ended the last chapter. Thank you for a great read,I look forward to seeing the next book. Thanks again for your hard work. Till next time😎
Too much from the girls on the team. I get the premise, that they're all damaged goods, but the symptoms of their respective "mental illnesses" chewed up too much of the story, such as it is.
I feel this will be more popular with people who have a broader sense of humour than I do, as it was bashing me over the head. It had its' good moments too, so it's a 3 instead of a DNF. Not sure if I can be bothered with a book 2 if it should appear, but maybe if it's a slow week.
You know you're getting quality just based on the authors, but this book was just such a fun ride as well! My only hope for book two is that we get some more romance between Garth and the girls, because right now it seems like mostly lust and a little bit of feelings.
This book nails comedic timing while not being either too serious or too ridiculous...okay maybe a little on the ridiculous. Very well written and funny. The characters are great, the MC has good motivation and back story. There's a fair amount of intrigue and a set up for a sequel which I really do hope happens
I can't believe how much I laughed reading this. I felt a little embarrassed how well the humor landed for me but they were very committed to the bits. Not all of them landed but there was one section where I could hardly keep reading because I was laughing so hard. Well done lads. Well done. The spicy bits were pretty good too!
Sexy, yes, but its a fun read. The pro game world getting turned on its head is a great premise, and a hysterical batch of characters make for a fun and naughty read. A real winner!
Garth has his hands full, literally and figuratively with a team full of nymphomaniacs! When he finally embraces the crazy they bring thanks to dick doc, it's wonderful. Now can the team ride the insanity to more victories? Bring on book 2!!
This was a great start to a series and a really wild comedy. The cast of ladies never fail to entertain and the Dungeon matches are a great mix of action, comedy, and teamwork. Really excited for a sequel.
So much fun. I've the top with sexual innuendo, but it is worth it. I had a hard time getting into the book because of the over the top sexual overtone, but once I decided to just roll with the fun, the book got good.
