Damn, I really didn't think they could do it. This run is actually good, like up there with the greats. I know a lot of people who read Spider-Man love the original Ultimate Spider-Man #1-#133, and that focused him being a highschooler, and I read mainly growing up through high school. In this version he's an adult with a job, married to Mary Jane, and has 2 kids (I got 1 of those things). Holy shit is it refreshing and actually breathing life into me that this is this good. I don't think I have smiled as hard as I did when he was at the top of the list of heroes that needed to be taken care of when the Maker was creating this universe. It makes sense, Spider-Man/Peter Parker isn't the strongest, he isn't the smartest, but he is the best super hero because he simply inspires every other hero and non-hero to be better. I think that's a good message, and something everyone can admire and look up to. I also love that he and Mary Jane actually have a healthy relationship, and communicate problems to each other and don't just let it build up until it gets worst. Mysterio's design in this goes crazy hard as well, might even be my favorite costume/design for him. Yeah this shit just makes me happy, like Spider-Man comics have been ass cheeks since I've started and finished college, and I can't thank Johnathan Hickman and the creative team enough for actually making me excited to read a Spider-Man series again. Like the Christmas party issue is great, just family and friends that love each other talking and communicating concerns or problems with each other and figuring it out. No action just a Christmas party with the characters and a crazy cliffhanger at the end, I can't wait for the next volume.
Ultimate Spider-Man #12 dials back the action for a quieter, more personal issue—and it really works. Set around Christmas, this one dives into some heartfelt (and awkward) family drama as MJ navigates a tense holiday dinner with her family, Uncle Ben, and J. Jonah Jameson.
There’s no costume, no fight scene—just great character work and sharp dialogue. Hickman continues to make this world feel lived-in, and the interpersonal dynamics add real depth to the world. Setup is strong for next issue.
What can I say? The book has been a blast throughout the entire year and this was a nice little wrap up for all of it. This jut continues the streak of awesome character moments for Peter's supporting cast, especially MJ, and the ending gets me so pumped for what will come this next year.
I was ready to give this two or three stars because it feels like Hickman trolling us for barely featuring Spider-Man in his Spider-Man comic so far, to the point of not letting Peter have a single line of dialogue for the second issue in the last five. The ending saved it for me as a comic. However, this isn’t a “thrilling conclusion to the second story arc” like it was advertised as because I don’t think this series has traditional arcs and if anything, this is just further escalation of the (slow) Sinister Six arc. It left me with a few chuckles and a lot of excitement for the next issue, but that’s all.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the character writing, but it kinda blows to spend $5 on a Spider-Man comic that only occasionally has Spider-Man in it. And it’s hard to care about all these brand new characters getting added and immediately pulling focus. I’d almost go as far as to say this was a filler issue, as the stories told here feel like a purposeful distraction to something big coming later.
If this were a chapter in a graphic novel, meant to create suspense, provide a tonal comparison to the heightened stakes,, and set the pacing before shit breaks loose? Fantastic entry. As a monthly comic ostensibly about Spider-Man that I paid for and have to wait a month to see resolved? pretty disappointing. I’d rather the twist happen earlier and cut some of the crap with MJ’s sister and mom both of whom I couldn’t care less about. Next issue will be better, but we should just have that story now instead of giving us this.
A Spider-Man comic without Spider-Man SOLD! We have a family gathering and even though recently we’ve had a lot of stuff happening with Peter and Harry, this takes a step back to focus on the family and reign it in. I appreciate it because we get to delve into the characters and take a breather from all the set up.
There is nothing huge plot wise, we have a lot with MJ, her sister and her mother butting heads and going through various things with her. MJ feels like the lead in this story, you have a lot going on with Ben Parker and people focusing on his loss and even hitting on him which was quite amusing.
Another solid issue, I look forward to what is coming up, still the best Spider-Man series that’s currently published.
I think I’m at the point where I’m pretty much hooked on the story at large, so I don’t see any reason to not keep giving these issues 4/5 stars unless something really drastic happens. I’m really enjoying this story across so many different facets, from the art (from both artists) to the writing to how the characters are developed. I think sometimes it can be a little slow, but not so much that it keeps me from enjoying it. The twist at the end of this issue was surprising! But I think if you look back at certain moments closely there were some good clues leading up to it.
First off, MJ family tension, holy crap this is the best character development of her I’ve read in YEARS. And it was neatly solved-ish ‘cuz it’s Christmas.
Second off, this series is so compelling at their twists and cliffhangers. They don’t feel quite cheap or random. They each feel set up. It’s not like Kraven came out of nowhere, he was set up last issue.
I loved the family dynamic of this issue so much. There was little to no action but man was it nice to just have this issue that develops characters outside of Peter. HOWEVER, the twist ending with Harry and Peter being kidnapped by Kraven….. OH SHIT !
Just when I thought this was going to be a low stakes Christmas party. Glad it was for the most part a a break from the usual doom and gloom of this Universe. Back to the regularly scheduled pain next time.
The perfect Christmas present. Family drama, burnt food and Mary Jane became the center of it all. Peter only two words, but they were the best. Damn that cliffhanger.
I thought this was gonna be a nice family Christmas issue. Maybe some issues with the in-laws, the BOOM!!!! HOLY GOODNESS. Waiting a month for the next issue is gonna kill me.
World building, world building, background, lore, world building, side characters, lore, world building, lore… 😴 WAIT, wait WAIT???? What just happened??
