I read this as a stand alone after reading some great reviews and while I’m not familiar with the characters I enjoyed it.
Jory is taking his two children Hannah and Kola shopping for bunny ears, since it’s Good Friday most places have sold out. They find the shop they’re looking for but they also find some women in dire need of help.
It’s a nice quick little read. It seemed a bit bizarre that Jory storms in when his husband Sam is a US Marshal and would appear to be better placed to help. But this is a light cute read so all’s good.
After reading But For You I was honestly scared that Jory had lost his spark and fire completely, but this short story luckily showed me that he still had some light in him left. He was once more all-in with his good-natured “act first, think later” mentality and his scatter-brain was also back in full force. It didn’t quite have the same charm that I was used to seeing from Jory, but I was happy to see him at least be something other than a meek little lamb again. The story itself was insanely ridiculous, but I didn’t much care about that. I just wanted to see Jory be somewhat back to himself again, and that was enough.
What was meant to be a cute and humorous little snapshot into the lives of Jory, Sam, and their two little cherubs, felt totally regressive to me, particularly in terms of character development across the series.
All the growth and maturity that Jory had (painstakingly) accomplished by book six was just thrown out the window, with him acting just as annoyingly reckless and idiotic here as he once did in decades (and books) past. And to be honest, that’s not a Jory I enjoy reading.
The kids are now nine and seven, Jory's still helping others without thinking of the consequences. Sam still get pissed because he is worried but forgives fast because he's Jory. Overall, it was a unnecessary short story of the couple and their kids, but cute for those who want more of the family.
Thank you, Mary, for in your wisdom blessing us with this sweet morsel. It's almost as good as those Easter chocolates shaped like mini eggs with a sugar shell.
A sample that in no way contain spoilers:
Hannah gave me another too sweet smile, like I was adorable. I didn’t remember why I even wanted kids.
Also, Jory makes this statement: What? No. I’ve got this. Any fan of this series knows this means trouble.
(Of course, my evil critic did sneak in a few times -- but no! That asshat will not ruin my fun.)
I probably should rate it 3 stars, but it soothed the savage beast created by Floodgates.
Jory being Jory. But this one was kind of fun. (Mich says, grudgingly.) Might have made an excellent full-length entry with the human trafficking investigation angle, too.
This is another free holiday “ficlet” that is available on the author’s website under the “free reads” tab. It’s not necessary to read these in order to understand the main books. They’re completely separate little bits of Jory’s insanity.
Wish it just focused on both of them, but really nice to see Jory and Sam again, as always. ~~~ Holy sh**, how did I know about this?? More Sam and Jory?! :D
This was just a short fun, very, very fun read that is free to read over on Mary Calmes blog.
If you are familiar with the series 'A Matter of Time' you will probably enjoy this as much as I did. If you haven't read the series and are familiar with it and thusly the awesome that is Jory, you'll think I'm nuts but I'm not...really, go read the series then read this again. You'll get it then, I promise.
I know, you've heard it before but I just LOVE Jory. I swear he could get in trouble just sitting and reading his Kindle :) And looks like his kids are going to follow in his troubling foot steps. It's amazing what kinds of trouble a set of bunny ears can get Jory in.
Cute, and it does nothing but make me miss Jory and Sam and now I want to read the whole series all over again, not like I have not read it 4 times at least :) More Jory and Sam, Please, maybe Aaron and Duncan, I miss those boys!
Cute little ficlet with Jory,Sam ,and the kids celebrating Easter.Of course it wouldn't be a Jory story without our favorite trouble magnet running into trouble and this short fiction is no different.Read and enjoy!
