HEART BROKEN 💔😭
"This is a day she has been waiting for all her life. Her chance to repay him. The one who loved her. The one who stayed."
Set across two time periods, we follow the emotional story of a young wife following her heart, a husband with the law on his side, and their daughter, caught in the middle.
This was an incredibly heartbreaking, compulsive, and beautifully written story. I am astonished that this is Lynch’s debut novel as she expertly deals with heavy themes of family dynamics, marriage, sexuality, love, loss, and injustice 😮💨
Despite these hard hitting themes, it was a joy to read. I was totally captivated and all-consumed by this story. I didn’t want to put it down for a second! A new talent in fiction for sure 🙌🏽
This book is told in two timelines, 1982 and 2022.
1982 - Dawn and Heron are married with a 4 year old daughter, Maggie. At a church sale Dawn meets Hazel. All their lives change from this moment on. Dawn, to her amazement, suddenly falls in love. However, when she admits to the affair, the outcome is not what she expected and Dawn may lose everything…
2022 - Focuses on Heron, who must tell his daughter, Maggie, who he raised primarily alone, about his cancer diagnosis. They have a close relationship but there is one thing in addition to his diagnosis that he has never told her...
This book made me feel ALL kinds of emotions 🥺 It is a story of great loss, love, and SO much more. The characters were all so raw and real, and so wonderfully depicted. I felt for them all in different ways. Each of them had something heartbreaking to deal with. Furthermore, having finished the book, all I am left with is wanting to know more about these characters. I want to know how their story continues. What happens next? How does Heron react? What does Maggie do with new information? How does Dawn live her life? These characters are meaningful and real. Lynch left nothing unsaid or hidden. She exposed the raw and painful truths of a very personal family matter. I commend her for doing so in a heartfelt, non-melodramatic way.
‘Divorce, which seems fair, a relief even. But the rest of it. The rest of it eats her alive one bite at a time.’
My concluding thought is: WOW 😣😭💔 I am so shocked, saddened and heartbroken, especially after reading the Author’s note. However, I must say that last sentence of the novel was utterly beautiful 🥹 While this book dealt with big, heavy, hard hitting themes, Lynch also had an incredibly realistic way of conveying the smaller moments in life. Similar in ways to Elizabeth Strout, Lynch exquisitely portrayed human intricacies, experiences, and emotions. This is one very powerful book that I hope makes people stop and think. I know I’ll be thinking about it for a long time to come…
