If I was rating The Crown of Nyx on worldbuilding and character development alone, this would have been a four star read for me.

Unfortunately this book (like the one that preceded it) ended with a very poorly crafted cliffhanger—one of my biggest literary pet peeves. So points off for that.

Then Audrey Moore followed the cliffhanger up with something I personally think is inexcusable: an offer to read the first two chapters of book 5 in the series if you subscribe to her Patreon.

Look. I’m trying to be gracious about this despite being incensed. A lot of authors these days rely on cheap marketing tricks like “cliffhangers” that are just “whoops the climax of this story is in the final chapter—guess you’ll have to continue the story in the next one” in order to keep readers engaged.

It’s lazy storycraft, it’s bad writing, and it sells books—so authors will keep doing it, probably, even if they think they’re taking their writing seriously. Whatever.

But offering readers a chance to subscribe to a Patreon in order to get some resolution to an unresolved (frankly, unfinished) narrative makes it very clear that the author knows damned well they didn’t finish their book. It’s cynical and money-grabby (and hey, get your bag I guess) and it’s a slap in the face to readers who actually pay for your books (rather than just borrowing them from KU) and to all authors who don’t use such cheap tricks to get paid.

From an artistic standpoint, to me, this looks like you just couldn’t be arsed to craft a coherent plot and instead spread your book out over two (or three) novels when you really only wrote one long-winded and disjointed doorstopper.

Cool. I guess. Hire a better developmental editor maybe. Idk.

I’ve loved the worldbuilding of this series and it’s the story itself that will keep me coming back even though each installment feels more like episodic TV (or something that should have been released serially—like wattpad fiction) than finished novels.

Also, this book in particular just didn’t feel as self-contained as the prior three books in this series—the plot felt disorganized and like it probably should have been 2 separate books (with one trip to The Underworld and a separate journey to The Old World), which would have put the length of each of those books more in-line with prior instalments in the series. I particularly felt cheated out of more exploration of the relationships between Ivy and her mates, and would have liked to see more exposition about the Underworld and demon culture.

This book felt rushed and too jam-packed with events, and yet unfinished at the same time. I think more resolution would have been possible if we’d spent more time in each unique setting and had more exploration of the emotions & character dynamics in each pivotal scene rather than just racing from one plot beat to the next.

I’ll keep coming back for the characters and the story but after a strong start to this series, The Crown of Nyx felt like a noticeable letdown, and has left me less excited for the next book than I was for this one.

The Daughters of Nyx – 2.5/5 Stars

I’m a sucker for a large harem, especially when it includes unique monsters and a curvy FMC—so this series definitely had elements I enjoy. I also really appreciated the inclusivity and diversity throughout the books so far.

That said, the spice is pretty inconsistent. I understand that each harem member brings a different dynamic, but the sudden shifts—one moment it’s all-in, the next it’s cold and distant—create a bit of emotional whiplash. Still, I’ve stuck with it, hoping for more cohesion.

It’s clear you're setting up spin-offs for side characters... but the issue is, we haven’t really been given a reason to care about them yet. I’d rather see deeper development of the FMC and her current harem before being nudged toward other potential stories. Right now, those setups feel forced and premature.

As the series nears its conclusion, I’m concerned it's trying to cram too much in—introducing important plot elements only to leave them underdeveloped or forgotten. Some relationship arcs feel rushed, or thrown in for the sake of it, which is disappointing after the buildup.

Fingers crossed the final installment brings everything together in a satisfying way.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

If I could give this book 100 stars I would.

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

I didn’t think these books could get any better and ah! Would you look at that? They did. I binged this entire series in a day and a half. Did I sleep? Not much. But did I love every single second of it? Absolutely. It’s hard for a cliffhanger to truly surprise me, but this? I never in a million years expected. I absolutely cannot handle it. I stared at my walls for half an hour last night. When I started this series I didn’t know that it wasn’t finished, but now I have to wait until MAY?!?!? Are you kidding??? In all reality I’m so reading the next one when it’s released. Thank you Audrey for creating such a masterpiece. I’m patiently (not really so patiently) awaiting the next. Thank you for always keeping me on my toes.

hold on to your hat for this ride

SO much happens in this book. It picks right back up from the last book and man do our MCs go on a wild ride. It’s a lot. There’s new places, new mates, new challenges and lots of info that gets tossed at you. I will say a few of the leading gentlemen kinda really were getting on my nerves at times but I powered through to the end…. And the ending….. don’t even get me started on the ending. I’m unwell after that. That was no gentle cliffhanger there. That’s for sure. I think this book gave us the right amount of buildup for the next book and I’ll be counting down the days until I can read that one.

Dot point to remember :

Adrian’s brother is the bad guy who killed his mother and is aiming to steel the skeleton crown in hopes of erasing all of Nyxs future Queens.

Demon king is definitely one of her mates but idk how it will manifest and when. Also giving me Rhysand vibes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Otherwise, I like the story, writing is nice, enough spice and drama, plot.

Oh. My. God. This series is soooo good, don’t sleep on starting this one. The characters had me in a chokehold right from book 1. Great character development and world/story building. Can’t wait for more 🥰😍

I read this as a beta read, so it may have changed since I read it (but will be just as good either way). And god I enjoyed this so so much!!

A little slower than the other books, and a lot all at once at the last 1/4. I can't wait for the next book, I need to know what Ivy's going to do, I really didn't expect it to all go that way.

Audrey Moore...you've done it again! A great book in a great series!

I typically review characters in my reviews, but since this is the 4th in the series, I'll simply direct you to my previous reviews for that.

Some Highlights:
- I took a star off because this was a LONG book. It could have been separated into two, one journey to the Underworld and one journey to The Old World. It would have put the page length more in line with the previous (3) books. Don't get me wrong, I read it all, (and loved it), but I did get confused about what was Underworld vs. Old World.
- This is a wild ride from start to finish. Get ready!
- The marriage sequence felt weird. No consummation of the marriage? That doesn't really track for the fantasy genre, but perhaps that will come into play later.
- Cliffhanger - I mean...that was MEAN Audrey Moore! Not happy I'll have to wait for the final installment about that!
- Ivy keeps going back and forth between confidence and being shy. I'd love for her to settle into one personality.
- The Smexy times were great as always!

Thank you (as always!) for the ARC!
