When Rory moves up the mountain to live with the wolfpack he's been supplying with food and necessities for years, he's feeling a little... bereft. His dragon friends have disappeared, and his brothers don't need him at their trading post. He tries to find a purpose, helping anyone who needs it inside the pack. And then an injured wolf he's never seen before limps into his life, shot by either a poacher or a rival pack, and Rory knows he's something special.
Fen is wounded in his heart as well as his body, on the run from wolves who broke up his small pack, and shot by an unseen enemy. When he limps into Rory's life, he's just trying to survive, but he knows he's been given something special in Rory. He has a mate. Too bad he's just a carpenter and not a growly warrior who can protect Rory from all the stuff that's about to come down on the Uinta mountain pack. Can Fen and Rory make it work when the pack is at risk?
Minerva Howe is the kinky alter ego of author Julia Talbot. Julia lives in the great Southwest, where there is hot and cold running rodeo, cowboys, and everything from meat and potatoes to the best Tex-Mex. A full time author, Julia has been published by Samhain as well as other publishing houses. She believes that everyone deserves a happy ending, so she writes about love without limits, where boys love boys, girls love girls, and boys and girls get together to get wild, especially when her crazy paranormal characters are involved.
I really enjoyed it. I'm glad the Calhound brothers are finally getting their turn in the spotlight. I like Rory and I feel like we still have a lot left to learn from Fin and his background. I feel like Liam is next and I'm very curious on what's going to happen with him. However, note for new readers, this is more of a follow up series and it is best to start with one of the other series of the dragons veil universe, like dragon's hoard
Rory by Minerva Howe is the first book in her The Calhoun Brothers series. It is the story of a man who thought he was human and the lone wolf that found him and realized they were mates. Rory Calhoun lived with the Jameson and Keegan Pack and loved it there. His brothers owned a trading company that delivered goods all over the area and was located about 45 minutes away. While Rory could have worked with them something called him to the pack. He worked as a hauler, a babysitter, half time cook, and did anything anyone there needed done. He also thought he was human, as did all of his brothers. One day he was out and about and found a wolf that was hurt. He called his Alphas and they helped him get back to their healer at the pack. The wolf was Fen and he was able to talk with Rory in their minds. He felt very safe with him and didn’t want him to leave as he was healing and since Rory felt a pull to him, he gladly stayed. Fen’s family was banished because they protested its anti-human stance and while they were looking for somewhere to go, the rest of his family were killed leaving just him. He was looking for a pack that would accept him when he was shot. There were some wolves that had abandoned the pack and were now almost rogue and they thought they were the ones that may have done this to him. Meanwhile the dragons who had lived nearby and were good friends had disappeared and the wolves missed them and wondered what had happened to them. Once Fen was healed he moved in with Rory and he knew that this was where he was meant to be. He asked the Alpha if he could stay and was told yes. He was a carver and was able to work with Timothy, their woodworker so he had a job that would contribute to the pack. The mating pull was strong between Fen and Rory so they had some hot love scenes with a consequence Rory wasn’t quite ready for. Plus he was developing some wolf tendencies that were completely unexpected. When he went to get some supplies from his brothers this came out and they sent for Fen who helped Rory with what he was going through. Meanwhile, Liam, one of Rory’s brothers was feeling the need to see where the dragons had lived and look for clues for where they had gone. They went to see Niall, the pack shaman, and once again they found themselves under fire. Then the consequences of their love making began to show and made Rory somewhat teary and emotional and Fenn was with him every step of the way, especially when it came and they were very happy and so in love. I enjoyed this story. Rory was such a sweet man who wanted to please everyone and tried his hardest to do a good job at all he did. Fen was sad at the loss of his family and couldn’t believe his luck in finding Rory, a good pack, and a way to contribute to both. He knew almost from the beginning they were mates but still wondered about Rory’s background since he didn’t shift until after they mated. The pack Alphas, the healers, and Rory’s brothers also played a big part in the story. While there was a happy ending for Fen and Rory there are still many questions left to be answered, like who is shooting at the wolves and what happened to the dragons. I’m sure Ms. Howe will answer these in the next books in the series. I recommend this book, especially if you like stories of shifters and how they fit in their packs, humans that didn’t realize they are really something else, a few mysteries that need solved, and a beautiful love filled ending for both of them.
Rory was not a good or bad book in my opinion; I feel it was just kind of nice but not really satisfying. I think because maybe there were WAY too many questions left unanswered. It felt more like a series setup than an actual complete book. That being said, there were some seriously cute and funny moments in this book, so I still think it is worth a read.
Rory thinks he is human and has been supporting the Jameson and Keegan wolf pack as a Jack of all Trades type. He cooked, babysat, did deliveries and just generally helped support the pack wherever he could. When we find out that he is actually an Omega wolf, this background and deep desire to help makes sense. Fen is a lone wolf after the murder of his family and is looking for a safe place to go when he is shot by an unseen enemy close to pack lands. Rory finds him and calls the Alphas to come and help get him to safety.
Rory and Fen are able to communicate telepathically, with both of them feeling incredibly safe in the other’s presence and feeling a strong pull to be near each other. While Fen is healing from his gunshot wound, he and Rory get to know each other and deepen their bond. Fen, knowing that he is a wolf shifter, realizes that Rory is his mate but is confused by the wolfy tendencies that Rory starts showing after they become intimate (He thought Rory was human like Rory himself and everyone else did) Surprise!! Rory gets pregnant and wolfs out completely for the first time while he is down the mountain visiting his brothers who don’t know what to do since everyone thought he was human LOL.
This is a really cute story and the way the author has Rory expressing his feelings about going fuzzy, or popping whiskers and wolfing out due to his stress and hormones was so adorable and funny, I cannot picture anyone reading that and not smiling. Fen gets permission from the Alphas to stay with the pack and put his woodworking skills to use and he and Rory are super excited about their little one and having found each other. There is a HEA for the couple but so many questions left that need to be answered. This book is a relaxing, safe, and cute read with little drama or angst.
I do not think I am going to continue with the series, it just did not grab my attention enough and the characters were cute, but I didn’t bond with them enough to continue.
I received a free copy of this book, provided generously by the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

I always enjoy Minerva’s shifter books and this one is no exception. Since these are omegaverse and mpreg, I guess I can talk about Rory’s pregnancy, since that is usual in these books. There are some great humorous elements in this book, some of the best referring to Rory discovering he is a wolf and pregnant — “Rory sniffed, feeling so… hormonal. Da***it, he’d always been just a guy. And now he was a pregnant omega wolf!” — and his “wolfing out”, “popping out fuzzy parts”, getting whiskery”, and then the alpha helping him when parts did start to shift — “All right, listen to me. Deep breaths, man. In and out. You’ve got this.” The alpha’s voice was soothing and helped, surprisingly, to keep him stable and unfuzzy. Defuzzy. The great antifuzzy. Whatever.” The reaction of Rory’s brothers also had me laughing out loud as they tried to take in the “wolf” part, and then the mating and the coming baby, asking —- “Let’s see if I can guess. Is he too fuzzy to come see us? It’s not like we haven’t seen him fuzzy. We were there for the original fuzz.” and “You know, like, hitched. Are you going to have a big wedding? Do wolves have big weddings? If you do, are they done fuzzy with fancy collars?” and “Right. Like is he going to have a puppy?” For a moment, Liam seemed utterly horrified. Dean rolled his eyes. “Seriously? We saw when John had the puppies—babies! Babies. When John had the babies. They were baby shaped, not puppy shaped.” I couldn’t help but laugh out loud through that whole section, and I’m doing again as I go back to find the quotes I wanted. It was written so well to help express the surprise that Rory was actually part wolf when no one in the family, including Rory, had a clue. Fen was great as his mate, a bit traumatized by what had happened before, but so happy with Rory as his mate and a baby on the way. These was so little angst, it just felt so sweet and satisfying, I just adored this book. Anytime I need to cheer myself up, I’m going to come back to this book and the pregnancy section. There is no way to stay down after rereading that section. If you want a book to put you in an overall good mood, with an interesting story to boot, I think this one qualifies. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
A great beginning for a new series set in Minerva Howe's Dragon Vail world! It is very interesting to see how the sudden vanishing of the dragons has affected those who knew them and were left behind with no idea where their friends went. The main wolf pack, the trading post, and Shaman Niall's little conclave have all been left wondering and worried.
Rory, who served as a link between his family's trading post and the dragons' lair, has been left adrift without a purpose. Stuck in the proverbial "Now What?!", the pack has kindly taken him in, even though he is just a human. He does his best to help out whenever and wherever he can, but he feels directionless and frequently unworthy. Anyone who has chased a goal or dream and either achieved it and found it to be not what was expected or had it suddenly taken from them can completely relate to his inner emptiness.
The story delves into the ways a person can become bogged down in feelings of inadequacy. Both Rory and Fen both believe they do not measure up to what they "should be." But it also shows how good friends, a supportive community, and someone who loves you for who you are can build you back up again.
The only issue with this sweet shifter story was that it ended rather abruptly. More of the story will probably be covered in the next book in the series, but the feeling of a missing epilog or final chapter is still there. Hopefully, the wait won't be too long before we can read more about the Calhoun brothers.

OMG, this book is hilarious! It still has the same sweet tight knit family feel that we’ve come to expect from all of the author’s other books but this one just tickled my funny bone more for some reason.
This was book one of a new crossover series or something about the Calhoun brothers, the ones responsible for providing needed supplies, first to our favorite dragons, who are no longer there and now, to the wolf pack.
Rory’s job used to be to take supplies up the mountain to the dragons but now he lives with the wolf pack. When a strange wolf stumbles onto pack lands, injured, directly to Rory, things he’d always accepted as fact, suddenly don’t seem to make as much sense.
This new series started off with a bang! Within the first few pages, definitely within the first chapter, I was hooked. Usually it takes a little while for me to get into a book, make sense of who’s who, what part they play, etc., but here, I knew within a very few minutes that I liked this book and would not be putting it down until The End. And I was right. Throughout the book we were teased with Liam, the possible main character for the next book but then at the very end, we’re shown hints of even more future characters.
You have GOT to read this book!! If you enjoy shifter romances AT ALL, you’re gonna love it and if you already love this author’s other books, you’ll be hooked on this new series like I am!! 5 stars!!!
I received a copy of this book for free from GRR, this is my honest review.
RORY is the first book in The Calhoun Brothers series, a spin-off from the Dragon's Veil series that I haven't read.
Rory is one of the younger Calhoun brothers and has felt drawn to be with the local Pack, run by Jameson and Keegan. He does whatever is needed, whether it's babysitting or cooking. He also supplies the pack with whatever they need, being as his brothers run the local Trading Post. He is the one who finds Fen, a lone wolf who has been shot by unknowns. Jameson and Keegan think they know but it isn't confirmed. Their story runs smoothly without any major angst or miscommunications.
They are ably supported by other characters, some of whom I imagine have had their stories told already. However, Liam, Rory's brother is the one who interests me. Why is he drawn to the empty dragon's lair? I want to know! In fact, I can't wait for all the brothers' stories!
A character-led story with smooth pacing and some steam, I was drawn into their world and look forward to returning in the future. Definitely recommended by me.

Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Jan 4, 2025
“Rory” by Minerva Howe is the first book in the ‘Calhoun Brothers’ series, but it is also connected to the various ‘Dragonveil Universe’ books. Rory’s position with his unusual pack as the human who runs errands and takes care of the wolf shifters’ children is suddenly altered when a wounded wolf shifter named Fen shows up. Suddenly, everything Rory has believed all his life is changing, and there are even more mysteries to be solved than just where the dragons have gone. Things will never be the same…for either male.
This adult male gay paranormal romance covers a lot of territory in one book, but there are plenty of snippets to keep one informed about this well-established world. I hadn’t quite paid attention to the fact that this was an m-preg romance, so certain events startled me, although I liked the birthing process in this world better than some I’ve encountered. Things moved fast in this quick read, but there are plenty of dangling threads to make one curious about both events that preceded this book and ones still to come. I connected with both the main characters and the secondary ones, and will be looking for both the sequels and for the other series that connect so I can learn more of the backstory.
As the youngest of the Calhoun Brothers Rory has always worked at their trading post, making supply runs up the mountain to the dragons. Now that they have all gone beyond the veil, he’s feeling a bit useless. He feels drawn to move up to the wolfpack to find a place for himself. Jameson and Keeland welcome him into their community, even helping him to build a house that is much too big for him. They know Rory belongs with them On a supply run Rory finds an injured Arctic wolf who has been shot. When the pack rescuers need to move him down to a healer, Rory volunteers to move the wolf in with him and take care of him. When Fen regains consciousness, he recognizes Rory as his mate and the Alphas know a big change is coming to Rory’s life. This is a good edition spin-off of Minerva Howe’s Dragon Veil Universe which I adore. Prior reading is not required but if you want to start at the beginning, which I highly recommend then start with her Dragon Guardians series. As for the Calhoun Brothers, there are a lot of them so we can expect more books.
Minerva Howe's Dragon Veil universe is absolutely magical. There's lots of Calhoun brothers and Rory was a great start to their stories. A human, Rory is an integral part of the Keegan and Jameson pack. He's the pack's supply manager and baby sitter, doing everything he can to make his packmates' lives easier. At the start of the story he's anxious about his roll in the pack, not realizing how essential he is. Wolf shifter Fen is packless and wounded when Rory rescues him. He recognizes Rory as his mate and not as human as he believes. This isn't your usual omega mpreg story. Rory is absolutely joyous and accepting as a wolf. Pure sunshine. Fen is more gruff than grump and he fits his omega beautifully. It's a fun, original take on alpha/omega. Lots of humor and steam. And as usual with MH, it's foodie. Lots of cookies and milkshakes. A quick read, fits in so well with the other stories in the Dragon Veil universe. I cannot wait for more. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my review.
**4.5** It's so good to be back in the Dragon Veil universe and to start the series off with Rory is perfect, so deserving of his own HEA. Fen is perfect for him, though they don't meet under the best of circumstances, Fen having just been shot and on the run. Rory is quick to act and it becomes clear pretty quickly that these two are important to each other. Rory goes through a lot of changes in this book and truly finds his place with the pack, what he has wanted most. Fen is escaping the loss of his family and someone attacking him but he fits perfectly with Rory and as part of the pack that welcomes him with open arms. There is the mystery of who came after him but, for now, Rory's happiness is enough. Another great read from Minerva and I'm eager to see what Liam, one of Rory's brothers is interested in going up the mountain for.... I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Rory adds to the numerous books Minerva Howe has already set in the Utah mountains featuring both a dragon clan and a couple of wolf packs. This particular book focuses on Rory, a human who has helped keep first the dragons and now the wolves supplied with goods from his family's trading post. He loves helping so much, he has been invited to join the wolf pack and has made himself a beloved member by always lending a helping hand to those who need it. Everyone is so happy then when he meets his own mate, Fen, a shifter who has lost his family and is delighted (and overwhelmed) to once again find himself a part of a pack and a family. This was a sweet story and I enjoyed it a lot. I am looking forward to more of Rory's brothers having their stories told. I presume Liam will be next based on his need to see the dragon's hold (what may be up there now the dragons are gone is the question!)
Minerva Howe is truly a gifted storyteller. In Rory, she gifts us with the story of two men, both damaged in some ways. Rory has always felt as if he was less. His brothers own a trading company but Rory is more comfortable living with the pack. He finds an injured wolf and brings him home for medical care. Fen turns out to be a lone wolf and was shot. The two men bond and find something special together but trouble may be coming and the two will need will need to be ready.
This book is filled with all sorts of reveals and surprises. Rory is more than he thought and Fen finds there can be a life with his new pack. The Calhoun brothers are in for a few surprises. We are in for more fantastic stories about these amazing brothers. I have an idea which brother is next, but you can decide for yourself. This is set in the same world as the dragons. Many of the same individuals appear in this one. It is great to connect with old friends.
I’ve been impatiently waiting for the next Dragon Guardian book and somehow never realized this book was on the way until the day before it released. I was and am so excited about this new spin-off in the Dragon Veil universe! I just knew there had to be more to the Calhouns!
Despite not anticipating the book, like I normally do with Minerva Howe’s other books, I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the book and getting a check in with old characters from the two packs. I find it interesting to see their perspective of the dragon’s disappearance.
Rory Calhoun is familiar since he’s the one that mostly worked with the dragon’s. The wolf Fen is new and I can’t say much about him without spoilers. Their story was sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
It’s time for a new series from Minerva and this one is off to an amazing start! Rory is a human who has become a part of the wolf pack down the mountain from the dragons. But the dragons are gone now and his whole life will change when he encounters a wolf that’s been shot further up the mountain. Fen is running from the pain of the loss of his family when he finds Rory. He will heal and find the mate he never thought he would get. It will be a bit of a shock for Rory to find out that he is indeed not human but wolf and it will bring him great joy! Danger will come from above but it won’t last long. Fen and Rory get their happily ever after and I absolutely loved it! I love the Dragon Veil Universe Minerva has created and I can’t wait to read what comes next!
I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
Sweet perspectives! Rory Calhoun, moves up to the mountain to work more directly with the wolves. He is the more direct laizon between the wolf pack and his brothers who own the trading store. He misses the dragons and likes to make himself useful. He encounters a wounded wolf whom he brings home ot the pack. Fen, is shot while on the run from wolves who destroyed his pack. He found himself unexpectedly trusting human Rory. Good story, that follows up a bit of what is going on in the Veil universe. Minerva, gives us Rory's human perspective of what goes on in the pack and how the mountain inhabitants are faring. Rory and Fen are great men who get to know each other as Fen recovers from his wound. Nice pace, good to see how old friends are doing while our interest is peaked by the mountain. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am so glad that the brothers are getting their own stories. I love this universe, and I am so very happy when we get to visit this world. Rory is a sweetheart who helps out by watching the kids, delivering to the outliers' who can't get into the village. He makes runs down to his brothers to bring up what is needed for the village to survive. Fen has been on the run since his immediate family has been killed. He finds Rory after being shot and almost killed. It is unclear exactly who was behind the attempted killing. These two made a very sweet couple and I love how easily Fen became part of the pack. Also, I can't wait to see what is pulling Liam to get up the hill. I recommend starting with the Dragon Hoard series as it brings it all together.
I received a copy of this book from GRR, and this is my honest review.
So glad for another book in this universe that I love. These wolves, dragons, and other characters are wonderful. It was nice meeting Fen, and Rory is absolutely adorable. This book didn’t reveal why certain things happened for Rory, but that just has me looking forward to the next book. I am glad Rory has a lot of brothers, and Liam, along with his interest in a certain area, has me completely intrigued. He also seems like a wild character, and I can’t wait to see where his mind wanders.
Kids are so cute and I love when they appear in books. Although she only had a little cameo appearance, John’s little seer had me smiling. Minerva Howe keeps presenting great stories from this universe and I am thankful for it.
Rory is a Calhoun and they are caretakers who supplied the Dragons on the mountain and that community has now moved on. Rory is at loose ends when he finds a wolf shifter by the river who has been shot and wounded and is in need of assistance. But it is more than that. Fen turns out to be his mate - they hear one another in their head. Fen needed someone to connect to and Rory finally found his mate and someone of his own. These men both need to find their purpose but also someone who helps them feel like they matter. This was a nice lead in to a new series with ties to folks we came to care about. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Rory is the first book in the new The Calhoun Brothers series. This is the story of Rory and Fen. Oh my goodness this book was just so good. I loved watching Rory and Fen become who and what they were ment to be. I was so happy to get back to the Dragon Veil universe. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I hope it is Liam's story. I do feel you would get more out of this story if you read some of the other Dragon Veil universe stories first. I would definitely recommend this book and any others in the Dragon Veil universe.
I am so happy that it is time for one of the Calhoun brothers to meet their mate. Rory always thought he was human and he is helping out the wolf pack he lives with. One day he was taking a walk when a wounded wolf shows up. He helps him by taking him to the healer. I was so sad to hear what happened with Fen’s family. After they mated, Rory realized that he was not human, but a wolf. I love the world building, great heat and chemistry between them. I am hoping Liam’s book is next and they they solve the mystery that is happening.
Boxed ears, bear claw, jack-in-the-box, unfuzzy or defuzzy?, whelping, not Trent, peanut butter & banana swirl
Fen and Rory are the MCs of this sweet and beautiful book. It starts out being tense with an alpha wolf shifter having a life-threatening wound. Rory has Fen taken to his wolf pack family for treatment and recuperation. The book itself is less than 200 pages, so the storyline moves quickly. The imagery is spectacularly rich and the characters are well-developed and very likeable. I enjoyed this immensely and recommend it.
It’s great to be back in the Uinta Mountains. Great cover and written with Minerva Howe’s usual easy reading and flowing style. I love the way the language is spoken in these books. Although the dragons are gone, there are still great stories to be told. Absolutely loved reading Rory and Fen’s story which was a delight to read although there were some traumatic moments. We get to meet favourite characters from the Wolf packs and also some not so favourite members of the pack appear to be raising their heads. Really looking forward to the next in the series.
This is the first of the spin-off series The Calhoun Bros. by Ms. Howe. Rory is a human who supplied the dragons and wolves with supplies. Now that the dragons are gone, he only has the wolves to work with. Rory stumbles upon a never-before-seen wolf who is severely wounded via a rifle shot. Though scared Rory somehow hears the wolf in his head. This is the beginning of Rory and Fen's journey and a great start to this new series. Surprises will be discovered, and hints will be revealed of future books. I received this ARC and I'm turning in a voluntary review.
Rory helps the pack however he can. His brothers run the trading post between human territory, the pack lands of the wolves and the mountains of the dragons. Rory is human but feels at home with the wolf pack. While on a walk he finds a white wolf who has been shot, but not a pack member. He contacts one of the alphas and get the wolf to the clinic. Fen who was shot is cautious because his family and pack have been killed. He has been on the run to find a home since. This is Rory’s and Fen’s story of rescuing each other and finding their pack.
I'm so enjoying this paranormal world with the wolves and the dragons. With this spinoff, the dragon friends have disappeared beyond the veil and the wolves are trying to live their lives without them. Rory is "human" living with the wolves and becomes pack. Fate brings him Fen a lone wolf and his fated. Their whirlwind romance is lovely and when truths finally surface, it gets even better. There is a little drama and mystery that is ongoing but we do get a HEA. Rory has a lot of brothers and I can't wait to read their stories.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Another great series start from Minerva Howe and a wonderful example of a hurt/comfort romance. Both Rory and Fen are at loose ends when they meet, Fen because of violence but they recognize in each other their mate. Watching Fen heal with Rory's care and both of them find their place in the pack is heartwarming, but danger is coming on Fen's heels and everyone in the pack is threatened. Howe as always does a fine job of giving our couple their HEA while still leaving plenty of other characters and events for us to wonder about and look forward to in future books in the series.
“This is going to hurt, but I won’t leave you. I promise. You found me.” The words just poured out of him, like they were what he was supposed to say.'
I loved this book. Good world building and wonderful characters. The story hooked me from the start. I loved the connection and comfort Rory offered the injured wolf- Fen. They were really sweet together and I loved how they bonded and fell in love. I loved the family, found family, and pack. A beautiful read. I can't wait for the next book in this series. 5 stars
