What’s not to love about an animal who will sit in your living room all day long, waiting for you to get home, and even if you need to work late and then stop for a stress-relieving beverage on your way home, when you unlock that front door, is absolutely overjoyed to see you? How could you not adore an animal who senses when your day is not going well and tries to cheer you up by dumping a sodden tennis ball in your lap?
I was probably 8 years old, playing in the back yard of our house in Prairie Village, KS, when my dad opened the gate and in rushed a 9-week-old Labrador puppy. I fell to my knees and spread my arms and that dog leaped into them as if we had loved each other our whole lives. It’s a scene that shows up in A Dog’s Purpose—a puppy and a boy meeting each other the very first time, both of them full of unrestrained joy.
We named the dog Cammie. She arrived in my life when I was just beginning to connect some of the dots in my memory to make a picture of who I was, forming my identity as a child. I remember every skinned knee and bicycle ride in the context of Cammie, who was always there for me. And I lost her just as I was starting to leave childhood behind, passing on after I’d spent a year in college. That’s Cammie, the dog of my childhood.
Years later I was riding my bicycle in the mountains outside of Pine, CO. A chance decision to bounce down a dirt road led me past a few scattered ranches and one small house near a creek, set back from the road at least 50 yards. A single “woof” from a dog caught my attention, and I braked and stood in the dry, clear air, regarding the dog who had called out to me.
She was on a chain by the house, and a fence stood between us, so I remained on the road even though I could see that the dog, a black lab mix with a crazily active tail, was clearly friendly. I gazed at her and the dog sat, attentive, staring into my eyes exactly the way my first dog, Cammie, used to look at me, really seeing into me.
And that’s when the thought hit me. What if this wonderful dog was Cammie? What if dogs live over and over again, and always remember us?
I dismissed the thought, waved at the dog, and rode away, but days later the idea came back to me. What if?
I’ve been a writer my whole life, but never have I ever written anything as important as A Dog’s Purpose.
I can’t promise you that A Dog’s Purpose will make you love your dog more—how could it do that? But I’ll tell you what a lot of people have told me: after reading A Dog’s Purpose, you’ll never look at your dog the same way again.

Ellie's life story as told from her perspective. Touching yet informative as the reader learns how search and rescue dogs are trained. Recommended for children and adults.

I am not really a dog person but when I was reading this book I fell in with Ellie's Story. It is about Ellie is a puppy that gets adopted and she is trained to be a service dog that is supposed to find people. It is amazing story. I like how it is really different from other stories. I like how it is a dog's life and perspective instead of a humans perspective. I have never read any kind of books that are like that until I read this. I really love this story. I would recommend this book to anyone even though you may not be a dog person or a animal person, but I think you would really love this story.

Ellie's Story is an inspirational, heartwarming and memorable book that people of all ages will enjoy. It is both awakening, sweet and upbeat. Don't miss out on this spectacular book!
Ellie was born to do something special. Ever since she was with all her brothers and sisters in the litter, she could tell that she was simply made to do something more. Then, when adoption day comes, Ellie finally gets her big break. Recently widowed police officer Jakob takes in the curious puppy. Every day is an adventure for Ellie as she trains to search-and-rescue and even gets a chance to do it for real. Though as time goes by, Ellie begins to realize the people who really need saving. This young pup must save her owner Jakob from the grief of losing a loved one. It won't be easy, though Ellie was never one to give up. Sometimes the people that really need our help are not the ones fighting a war on the outside, though the ones fighting a battle on the inside. This is Ellie's purpose, a dog's purpose.
This novel is by far one of the best book that I have ever read! I loved how W. Bruce Cameron really gave Ellie a personality. He portrayed everything in so much detail, though from a dog's perspective. The creativity that it must have taken to put yourself into the shoes of another living thing is tremendous. It left me wondering at what my dog thinks of me and if he is trying to save me just like Ellie is trying to save Jakob. It was truly an eyeopener. The only thing I did not like was that the plot was a bit hard to follow at times and the author did not give enough information about Jakob's past. Despite this, the book was a rush of emotions. I laughed at all the different perceptions that Ellie had of the human world. Though most importantly, I felt hope. I felt so much hope that things can and will get better. Even when you feel like giving up, work through it and it will pass. This is probably one of the biggest morals of this book. Anyone who enjoys a humorous and deep story will love this novel. If you have enjoyed any other book by this author, you will fall in love with the story as well. It is a lot like the book Bailey's Story which is by the same author and the sequel to the book, as well as the new movie A Dog's Purpose.

Ellie’s Story is about a German Sheppard puppy named Ellie who has been trained as a service dog, specifically search and rescue. If you don’t read it because the puppy on the cover is so cute, read it for the story – it is heartwarming. The story is told from Ellie’s point of view, which makes it all the more adorable.
Ellie’s training has taught her to be an excellent search and rescue dog and the reader learns all about her adventures as she does her job. She also has handlers in whom she senses sadness and she wants to help them too. Overall, this is just a sweet, wonderful, and enjoyable story, particularly for dog lovers.

What a great, great story for dog lovers everywhere! Seth has been reading all things dog and animals lately, and he suggested I read this one before we go see the Dog's Purpose movie together. This is a tween-aged version of one the dog stories in the Dog's Purpose adult novel--this one is about Ellie, the search and rescue German Shepherd. It is heart-warming, exciting, and eye-opening, the whole book is told from the dog's point of view. Recommended to dog lovers everywhere!

The story of a search-and-rescue dog, from puppyhood to retirement, told from the dog's perspective. I think a lot of kids would like this book because so many of them have had encounters with the various types of working dogs. And the information at the back will help them to learn about more than just Ellie.

A cute and easy read..it's tailored to kids but I absolutely loved it, ha! There were moments of sadness of course because it wouldn't be A Dog's Purpose series book without it but so many happy tears too!

This story is written for the juvenile reader, but it is enjoyable for the adult reader as well!! Very well done, and a great addition to animal-related literature for kids.

This story is a heartwarming tale of a search-and-rescue dog who is devoted to her cause, and won't leave a person behind. This is an incredible book that EVERYONE should read!

I didn't realize that this book Ellie's Story is an expanded portion from Cameron's other book, 'A Dogs Purpose'. That portion was one of my favorites. This version for me somehow didn't work so well for me and I am not sure why. Part of it may be that it is my second time to hear the story.
The training of Ellie to work search and rescue went without a hitch, no challenges there. I guess that is fine when reading with a youth. I think since it was covered simply and perfectly it didn't feel as real. I have read of real Search and Rescue dogs, like in one of my favorite books, 'So That Others May Live: Caroline Hebard & Her Search-And-Rescue Dogs' by Hank Whittemore, so a watered down version didn't appeal to me as much.
The narration of the dog was appropriate, not like some books where the dog has a vocabulary, frame of reference, and intelligence is far beyond what a dog should have.
When Ellie had to be transferred to another handler, there was no challenge or issue from the dog there, but the challenge was with the person they assigned her to. Ellie's handler Maya had to work really hard to pass the fitness test to be certified. Since she seemed to have so much trouble getting up to shape needed for the work with a S&R dog, I wondered about why she was selected over other candidates.
This probably is a good and appropriate book for youth. For me it didn't gel so much. I would recommend reading 'A Dogs Purpose' instead.

Finished the book yesterday March 14th and I was really excited for it because I have a 7month old female gsd at home and I thought I would I would like the book. It’s not that I didn’t like it it’s that it was just meh there wasn’t anything exciting and all of it was pretty predictable. I would say though the best part of the book was the last couple of chapters. I enjoyed the emotion and depth of the characters though which is mainly why I’m giving it a 4/5 stars. I would recommend for younger audiences though just because it’s a little bland and very predictable.

Que linda historia, sencilla, amena, emotiva, contada desde la perspectiva de Ellie, una perrita entrenada para buscar personas desaparecidas, nos meteremos en su piel y sentimientos, creo que desde hoy veré con otros ojos a estos nobles animales, sin duda sería el regalo ideal tanto para niños y adultos!

I loved this book, as much as I always love Bruce Cameron's stories about dogs. My own dog had just passed, and reading this book was felt by me as a sort of "homage" to him...
The book brings closer the experience of a life of service in the form of a trained dog that succeeds at finding people (kidnapped children, people involved in natural catastrophes) and the way the dog's work intertwines with the lives of her trainers...

Wspaniała książka. Ja się bawiłam świetnie, a mam 22 lata!
Jest lekka, przyjemna w odbiorze. Ellie jest bardzo dobrze wykreowana, oczami wyobraźni widziałam tego uroczego pieska ♥
W tej książce ciągle się coś dzieje, ciągle jest jakaś akcja i nawet na chwilę tempo nie zwalnia. Nie ma w niej miejsca na nudę, więc uważam, że każdy (w każdym wieku) będzie śledził z przyjemnością losy słodkiej Ellie.
Chociaż przyznaję - inteligencja tego psiaka nie zna granic. Trochę było to przerysowane, bo ona wszystko (!) rozumiała od razu i potrafiła zrobić. Co prawda, to pies szkolony no ale i tak.... dzieciaczki mogą potem dziwić się dlaczego ich pies nie rozumie co się do niego mówi.
Rewelacyjnie oddany świat widziany z perspektywy psa - od szczeniaka do dorosłego. Autor przedstawił jak pies podchodzi do nauki - to może być motywacją dla dzieci, by się uczyć nowych rzeczy. Dobrze, że została przedstawiona praca psa policyjnego - psa ratownika.
I cieszę się, że znalazły się wzmianki o tym, żeby nie wołać/ nie dotykać czyjegoś psa bez pozwolenia. Warto o tym pamiętać. Tutaj akurat to dekoncentrowało Ellie, która szukała zaginionych ludzi. Dobra nauka dla młodszych.
Nie wiem, jak odbierają upływ czasu dzieci, ale dla mnie w tej książce było to trochę za szybkie. Historia zaczyna się, gdy suczka się urodziła i jest szczeniaczkiem, a kończy gdy zaczyna siwieć. Tak samo życie Jakoba mocno się zmienia. Tak naprawdę cała książka to kilka lat z życia Ellie -a czytając mam wrażenie że to kilka tygodni.
(Ale rozumiem ten zabieg. Zbyt dużo dodanych mało interesujących informacji mogłoby znużyć.)
+ Po zakończonej historii Ellie możemy przeczytać ważne informacje o pracy psa ratownika, a także o tym jakie psy się do tego nadają i czy nasz pies mógłby nim zostać. Nauka poprzez zabawę - najlepsza sprawa!
Ja na pewno chcę poznać inne książki autora i spędzić czas z innymi cudownymi psiakami! :)

Ellie’s Story by W. Bruce Cameron is a great book and i think kids 5-8 grade should read this book. In this book there was a puppy about 6-8 mounthsold named Ellie. She was chosen to be a police dog when a polic officer name Jakob brought her home. Once Ellie was trained she started working as a search and reascue dog. I feel like this book helped me a lot because it is for Ellie’s perspective, so it helps me imagine a dog’s perspective is like. I chose this book because I like dogs but also when I saw this book i saw a dog on the front cover, so I started to rad the first chapter and I fell in love with this book. I recomend Ellie’s Story to middle school girls or boys grade 6-8.

Ellie is a German shepherd trained to be a search and rescue dog. This is a story told from Ellie's point of view which amps up the charm factor . There are interesting bits to learn about the world of search and rescue. A sweet short story!

I really love the Dog Purpose books and this children’s book about Ellie the search and rescue dog was a winner! Ellie was always one of my favorites, so getting to know her better as well as Jakob and Maya was such a treat! My teenage son and I read it together as part of homeschool, and we both adored it. Very highly recommended for all ages who love heroic dogs :)

Na lekturę książki „Był sobie szczeniak: Ellie” zdecydowałam się przypadkowo, jak to bywa ze wszystkimi moimi audiobookami. Lubię słuchać tego typu książek, wykonując jakąś sprawunki, przeciskając się między półkami w czasie zakupów, czy jadąc do pracy. Kiedy jestem skupiona na dwóch rzeczach na raz, audiobook musi być dla mnie historią raczej prostą i nieskomplikowaną.
Ellie to suczka owczarka niemieckiego, która prowadzi nas przez całą książkę, opowiadając o pierwszych dniach życia z braćmi, siostrami i kudłatą mamą, a później o mieszkaniu z policyjnymi trenerami - Jakobem i Mayą. Ellie ma zostać psem tropiącym ludzi i dzięki niesamowitemu węchowi i instynktowi, w lot pojmuje wszelkie wymagania treningu.
„Tak powinno być. W Pracy chodzi właśnie o to: żeby dzięki niej było lepiej.”
Książka jest krótka, prosta, lekka i przyjemna. Podczas słuchania niesamowitej interpretacji Pani Magdaleny Zając-Zawadzkiej, miałam wrażenie, że oglądam film familijny z mówiącymi zwierzakami. Jak wiadomo, zwierzęta zapewne inaczej postrzegają świat, ale psy to wspaniałe, mądre, wierne stworzenia, które kochają człowieka. Miałam okazję uśmiechnąć się wiele razy, tak bardzo pozytywny wydźwięk miała ta książka. Dla osoby kochającej zwierzęta, która nie spodziewa się zagmatwanej fabuły rodem z thrillera, zdecydowanie na tak ;)

Książka jest krótka, prosta, lekka i przyjemna. Podczas słuchania niesamowitej interpretacji Pani Magdaleny Zając-Zawadzkiej, miałam wrażenie, że oglądam film familijny z mówiącymi zwierzakami. Jak wiadomo, zwierzęta zapewne inaczej postrzegają świat, ale psy to wspaniałe, mądre, wierne stworzenia, które kochają człowieka. Miałam okazję uśmiechnąć się wiele razy, tak bardzo pozytywny wydźwięk miała ta książka. Dla osoby kochającej zwierzęta, która nie spodziewa się zagmatwanej fabuły rodem z thrillera, zdecydowanie na tak ;)

This was a sweet book for young readers. I read it aloud to my almost 2nd grader. She loves animals so this was a good subject. It was informative about search and rescue dogs and it had some good suspenseful moments. I was really disappointed, however, by the negative body connotations that author included, in reference to Maya. It seemed sexist that the female police officer had to lose weight and struggled to get in shape to pass her certification. It is mentioned several times how she could not "keep up", while the male police officer is painted as this strapping masculine figure who probably has no body fat whatsoever-yet he is devoid of emotion due to grief. I wish this body shaming type narrative had been left out. I censored it as I read because that is not the culture I wish to offer my daughters. The worst was when her mother told her "now that you have passed the test, you need to eat," as if suggesting Maya had been restricting herself from food. It is worrisome to read these types of narratives in a children's book. Do better next time, Mr. Cameron.
