This prequel to the best-selling novels finds Mercy Thompson, shapeshifter coyote, recent graduate with a degree in history visiting the Tri-Cities to apply for a job as high-school history teacher to be disappointed that the school is more interested in a new PE coach. So she applies for an unorthodox job: she'll be Mercedes, the lady VW mechanic. In this issue she meets Adam Hauptman and Stefan the Vampire as well as Zee and his son Tad for the first time ever.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana, to a children’s librarian who passed on to her kids a love of reading and books. Patricia grew up reading fairy tales and books about horses, and later developed an interest in folklore and history. When she decided to write a book of her own, a fantasy book seemed a natural choice. Patricia graduated from Montana State University with degrees in history and German and she worked for a while as a substitute teacher. Currently, she lives in Montana with her husband, children, and six horses and writes full time, much to the delight of her fans.
While waiting for the next in the Kate Daniels series (Ilona Andrews) I discovered Mercy Thompson. What a nice addition to my new genre urban fantasy. Bad a** women with swords rule.
I really enjoyed this, the artwork was great. I would have liked more though. Like way more. ;-) the storyline was interesting and fit nicely with the series, there just wasn't enough to it.
There's nothing new here if you've read the series and it's incredibly short. I'm not paying to find out if the other "Graphic Novels" (this is shorter than a standard comic book) are similarly lacking.
Wolf At The Door is Issue 1/4 of the graphic novel prequel to Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson Series. The art starts off as mediocre then steadily goes downhill as the issue progresses. It's just not beautiful or high quality. Even the cover, which is normally supposed to be the best picture in the comic, has anatomical issues. Mercy's right thigh is overly "round" with an unrealistic arch, the calf is too short and her boot looks strangely stubby.
The story is fine though. Mercy has just come to the Tri-cities hoping to get hired as a history teacher, until they tell her they expect her to also coach track and 2 other sports like her deceased predecessor. Thanks to Mercy's uncontrollably hot temper, the interview does NOT end well. Mercy dreads having to go back home to her mother in Oregon. It looked like another year in Portland and "would you like fries with that?
It doesn't help that she stumbles into a werewolf pack and while fighting them off another pack shows up, the ensuing battle messes up her car that she takes to Zee's garage to get fixed, meeting Tad for the first time. This is what I mean by the art is just not good.
However the story in this first issue is fine. I was particularly touched when Mercy saves Tad from the wrath of a Vampire, only to be rescued in turn by Stefan. So we are introduced to Tad, Adam and Stefan already, which makes this pretty nifty!
I like the artwork. It was a bit male-gazey but not so much that it disturb the story. And I got sucked in.
I actually read some of Patricia Briggs books before but I can't remember anything about them. So I'm working my way through the Mercy Thompson World - Complete Series. I'm in he mood for a romance series without the tropes I despise. This series comes highly recommended.
An okay read. Graphic novel of Mercy Thompson and her first settling into her town. It was, like I said, okay. The novels have Mercy with a healthy dose of fear, respect, and also disrespect of others. In the graphic novel she just is angry with a chip on her shoulder all the time. She’s either angry or temporarily depressed.
I want more b/c it offers backstory, but not in graphic novel form. Sigh.
I really like these graphic adaptations of the Mercy Thompson world. Before reading these, it was a concern that they wouldn’t mesh with the mental pictures which are inevitably developed when reading the books but actually I found the graphics add a new and enjoyable element. This is one of a four part series and ends on a low key cliffhanger, so be prepared to get the other novellas in the series.
Enjoyed the graphic novel/visual of Mercy!! Was like a prequel to Moon Called. The story of how Mercy gets to the Tri-City area and starts working with Zee & Tad. Why Bran the Marrok sent Adam and his wolves to the area.
Loved the visual depiction of Mercy and Zee. Perfect. ( the others were ok. Daryl ok. Adam ok. EXCEPT HE HAS BROWN EYES. Not blue. Stefan? Not how I pictured him. At all. )
Reading this has sparked an interest in a reread of the series.
Patricia Briggs writes a mean werewolf/vampire/urban fantasy and I absolutely, positively LOVE the way she does it! Her characters are fabulous and I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!!
Coming back to this prequel, after making it to book 4. I really love this art. Mercy looks exactly like I would have imagined. Stefan doesn't, but it's better. I'm excited to see some of the other characters.
Het is de prequel van de mercy thomson novels serie in comic vorm! Heel leuk om de karakters tot leven te zien komen en te lezen hoe ze elkaar leren kennen.
An origin story for Mercy as we learn about how Mercy got her garage , and how a young boy's death l started her road to danger. Gorgeous art and a nice story
