228 BBY. The Battle of Eriadu begins in earnest with the Jedi and their allies on one side versus the Nihil led by the cruel Warden on the other.
This book is mostly action start to finish and that's fine except for two things. The first is simply that these Adventures books are aimed at a slightly younger readership and, therefore, the darker aspects of a full-scale battle are muted here so as to not upset the kids. The second is that much of the artwork here is by Harvey Tolibao and his overly-busy art style means that the splash pages of all-out battle are actually so messy as to give you a headache. It should be cool to see all of the characters from the Adventures series charging into battle together, but instead it just looks a mess.
What I did like here were a few of the more insightful character beats. In particular, I enjoyed seeing the reunion between Jedi Padawan Gavi and his friend-turned-nemesis Driggit. Each of them has gone through a lot since their childhood together on Valo and how their story and relationship plays out here gave the book a strong emotional hook.
This graphic novel collects issues 14-16 of The High Republic Adventures Phase III and "The Battle of Eriadu." The story continues with the Battle of Eriadu as it has interfered with Lula and Zeen's wedding. The Jedi must face and remove the Warden, who is taking up leige in the city. Farzala is one of the main focus Jedi of these particular issues and reflects on the teachings of his master as he applies them to saving the city from tyranny. "The Battle of Eriadu" focuses on characters seen formerly, Jedi Padawan Gavi, and his childhood best friend Driggit, who joined the Nihil, but is her betrayal all that it appears?
I enjoy the art, but the Battle of Eriadu is getting a bit dry. I do enjoy the characters in this arc, and I actually liked the closure when get with Gavi and Driggit, as we have seen them in their own stories in previous collections. I also thoroughly enjoy Qort and seeing the unique cultural aspects of his race as he takes on his own youngling.
Another solid Volume as we inch closer to the end of the Adventures side of the High republic, Exclusively taking place on Eriadu during the events of trials of the jedi.
In this volume it was great to start seeing some side stories begin to wrap up and see some characters we haven't seen in a moment like Sav, yaddle and i was cheering seeing jedi master Tera Sinube make an appearance.
Also the amount of heart in hand moments keep growing which has me semi nervous for the final volume. Moments with zint , Qort and gavi had me ready to reach for the tissues and My enjoyment for the Adventures comics have really been amplified by reading all the middle grade books and seeing so many many of these young characters be made to grow up so early. To see Ram and Tep Tep as older jedi knights would be a dream
This is mostly about the battle on Eriadu that happens during Trials of the Jedi, and gives quite a bit of detail on that. I don’t really enjoy battle scenes in comics though because they’re chaotic and hard to follow. The last issue of this collection also was resolving some kind of issue between two characters that I don’t even remember at all, so I felt really detached and unemotional about what was happening. I have tried to read everything High Republic and I still had no idea who those characters were.
This volume contains action (sometimes chaotic, sometimes brilliant) and ties up a lot of plot threads from different media (which is... kind of annoying, because I feel that Gavi's story should have stayed in novel form). However, the Battle of Eriadu works so much better in comic book format. I also enjoyed the short stories more than the main adult novel covering these events... so it's really just the novel that didn't work. Everything other version of these events is great.
2 stars is about right. Just a bunch of battle scenes, for the most part. It also doesn't help to have one issue with the detailed artwork of Harvey Tolibao, followed by three issues with sketchy, rather ugly artwork from Bruno Toni. And then a final, completely unrelated issue with someone else completely.
Not much to say that I haven't said in my thoughts about the previous issues in this series. I liked the focus on Farzala in these, though I do question the decision to stretch out the Battle of Eriadu over so many issues.
The one-shot at the end was a nice change in artwork. I did enjoy the ending to Driggit's arc.
I loved THRA #14-#16 but The Battle of Eriadu one shot had my whole heart. The friendship between Driggit and Gavi, Gavi calling Kildo "the boy I love", I have cried so hard this whole one-shot I love these babies so much.
Thanks to Edelweiss for an ARC. It always feels amazing to read a Star Wars graphic novel. I enjoyed the art and the storyline in this book. The first half felt a bit dry, but I found the last ten pages to be well-executed and it left a good aftertaste. Fans will enjoy it. Read it!
This was alright. It was hard to get into because it's one big battle full of an ensemble cast. It's really difficult to get into any of the characters because they get such little screen time. Most of it is just random fighting.
Was not expecting Kassav's piece of shit ass to have this lasting of an impact on this era, but here we are with Eriadu on the brink of destruction because he mistimed the arrival of an emergence.
Or I guess Marchion Ro might have just given him the wrong path... so really it's all because of him.
